A sudden, jarring ringtone shattered the tense atmosphere at the table.
Donovan was so preoccupied with thoughts about Riley and Adam's relationship that he didn't even check the caller ID before answering.
As soon as he picked up, a worried female voice came through.
"Donovan, I heard from Catherine that you went to North City on business. How did it go? Is everything resolved?"
Hollis had gone to Donovan's office yesterday but didn't find him there. After asking Catherine, she learned that Donovan had gone to North City and called early this morning to check on him.
She expected the call to be hung up on her like before, but she was surprised at how quickly he answered.
Hollis thought Donovan had finally let go of his grudge against her, and her voice was full of cheer.
Hearing Hollis's voice, Donovan frowned slightly and instinctively looked up at Riley across the table.
It was quiet at the table, and Riley and Adam could more or less hear each other on the other end even though they didn't mean to.
Almost as soon as the voice fell, Riley's face darkened.
Hollis's accusations the last time they met still echoed in her ears, accusing her of being the mistress between her and Donovan.
This call timely reminded Riley that no matter Donovan's attitude, he was about to get engaged to Hollis, and she should keep her distance from him.

"Careful!" Donovan, holding his phone in one hand, grabbed her wrist with the other.
Riley, thinking the call had already ended, softly thanked him.
On the other end, Hollis's initial joy vanished when Donovan suddenly said he had to hang up. She was about to say something more when she heard a woman's startled cry.
The voice sounded somewhat familiar.
Hollis glanced at her phone screen, puzzled as to why Donovan hadn't hung up yet.
Biting her lip, she remained silent.
She wanted to see who that woman on the other end was!
Unexpectedly, the next moment, she heard Riley's voice thanking Donovan.
Almost instantly upon hearing Riley's voice, Hollis angrily hung up the phone, then furiously threw her phone onto the bed.

She had clearly warned her last time, yet Riley had no shame in showing up around Donovan again!
