Chapter 322 We Can Also Take Care of Mommy
The kids splashed around for almost two hours, and when they finally got out, Riley took 'em to grab some grub. On the way, she couldn't shake off what Landon had blurted out in front of that dude.
Riley kept glancing at the kids through the rearview mirror, and finally, she couldn't hold it in anymore. "Landon, why'd you say that? Why'd you call Donovan your daddy?"
She'd held back earlier to keep the fun vibes going, but now she just had to know.
Landon looked at her with those big, innocent eyes. "Cause Uncle Donovan's pretty cool!"
Riley was caught off guard, not sure if he was being serious or just messing around.
"And besides, I think if I really called Uncle Donovan, he'd show up." Landon said it with this weird confidence. Even though he wasn't a fan of Donovan 'cause he was gonna marry some other woman, Landon just knew that if something happened to Riley, Donovan would be there. If it wasn't for that awful woman Hollis, he might actually be okay with Donovan.
Riley was floored by Landon's words, so that she didn't doubt him for a second. After all the events with Donovan since coming back, she kinda felt the same way—that Donovan would show up. Even if she didn't really want him to.
Realizing she was thinking like this, Riley gave herself a little sarcastic smile. Even if he did show up now, so what? He was still gonna marry Hollis. They were destined to be strangers.
Thinking about it, Riley pushed those thoughts away and just reminded the kids, "Don't go saying that to anyone else. Donovan's got a fiancée. If this gets out, it's bad news for him and us."
The kids nodded, looking even more ticked off at Donovan.
'Stupid daddy, he's gonna marry someone else, and mommy's still thinking about him!' Landon thought.
Riley thought back to what happened earlier and felt a bit freaked out. "If something like that happens again, you two need to look out for yourselves. I'll handle it. You're still kids, don't try to stand up for me."
That guy earlier was way bigger than the kids. If he'd been more aggressive, Riley didn't even wanna think about what could've happened. She might not have had time to call for help.
After she finished talking, she heard some rustling from the back seat. The kids sat up straight and said all serious-like, "We gotta protect mommy! That guy was obviously a bad dude, and there's no one else around to help mommy, just us!"
Hearing them, Riley felt a warm fuzzy feeling and her face softened a bit. "You can do that when you're older. Standing up for me now just makes me worry more about you."
"We're already grown up!" Landon said with a serious face, "Mommy, you've taken care of us for so long, we can take care of you and protect you. Even if we don't have a daddy, we can do what a daddy can do!"
Seeing Landon's determination, Riley didn't wanna crush their spirit, so she smiled and said, "Well, thanks in advance then."
The kids nodded solemnly.
