Chapter 333 It Was My Own Carelessness
"Hollis, you take the floor," Catherine said, knowing Donovan wouldn't spill the beans easily, and turned her gaze to Hollis.
A flicker of panic crossed Hollis's face. She shot a glance at Donovan and furrowed her brows, looking all kinds of helpless. After a beat, she dropped her eyes and mumbled to Catherine, "Ms. Monroe showed up at the hospital with her two kids earlier. We bumped into them. One of her kids looked kinda sick, and it reminded me of Finley. I got worried, so I asked Donovan to check on them."
Like she was scared Catherine wouldn't buy it, Hollis added, "It was my idea. Donovan wasn't planning to go."
She then looked up at Donovan with a pleading glance, like she was begging him to back her up.
As expected, Catherine wasn't buying it and shot Donovan a stern look. "Really? Hollis is hurt, and you went to check on someone else's kid?"
Donovan frowned and kept his mouth shut. Catherine knew Donovan well enough to get that his silence meant he did go see Riley's kid and that Hollis's story was bogus. It was clear he went on his own.
Thinking about how Hollis got seriously hurt saving her, and Donovan ditched Hollis to see Riley's kid, Catherine was fuming. "Hollis is still covering for you. And you? Have you ever thought about Hollis? She's hurt, walking around the hospital alone. What if she gets bumped and her injury gets worse?"
Seeing Catherine mad, Hollis quickly grabbed her hand and tried to calm her down, "Auntie, I'm fine. My injury's almost healed. Ms. Monroe is alone with two kids; it's tough for her. We know each other. Even if she messed up before, the kids are innocent. Not just Donovan, I was worried about the kid too."
Catherine felt even more heartbroken seeing how understanding Hollis was. She couldn't get why Donovan couldn't see Hollis's goodness.
"Donovan, don't you have work to do? You should go. I'll chat with Auntie," Hollis said, trying to be considerate. Donovan frowned, glanced at the two of them, and, not wanting to hear his mom's lecture, turned and walked out, closing the door behind him.
Seeing Donovan leave like that, Catherine felt even guiltier towards Hollis. "Hollis, I'm sorry you had to go through this. Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Hollis smiled and said, "It's nothing. I'm happy with how Donovan treats me now."
Catherine still felt it was unfair for Hollis and kept promising her that she wouldn't let Riley into their house. But as she spoke, she noticed Hollis's face getting paler.
"Hollis, what's wrong? Did someone bump your arm earlier?" Catherine asked, her brows knitting with concern.
Hollis's arm was throbbing with pain, but she forced a smile and said, "No, I just wasn't careful..."
The implication was that her arm was indeed messed up.
Catherine stared at her intently, her eyes full of suspicion. "What's really going on? Was it really your own fault?"
After all this time in the hospital, Hollis's arm was fine, but today she suddenly got careless and hurt herself? Catherine was going to buy that.
