Chapter 304 The Culprit

The doorbell rang again, and Landon and Winston shared a look before stopping Sophie from answering and heading downstairs themselves.

At this hour, it could only be someone looking for Finley.

When they opened the door, they weren't surprised to see Donovan in a suit, with a man carrying a medical kit behind him.

"Where's Finley?" Donovan asked, clearly annoyed to see the kids.

These two always had it out for him and probably wouldn't let him in today either.

Sure enough, they blocked the door, eyeing him suspiciously. "What do you want?"

Knowing their mom didn't want to see Donovan, especially when she was sick, the kids were even more determined to keep him out.

Donovan sighed. "I heard your mom's not well, so I brought a doctor."

He stepped aside to introduce the man. "This is Dr. Davis, the Wilder family's doctor."

Dr. Davis smiled and nodded at the kids.

Landon and Winston exchanged a wary glance. "How did you know she's sick?"

"Zoey called me," Donovan said. "She said Finley came to see your mom."

The kids hesitated. They didn't want him to see their mom, but the doctor complicated things.

Seeing their resolve waver, Donovan mentioned Riley. "You're doing great taking care of your mom. She probably hasn't been to the hospital yet. Let the doctor check her out; it'll help her get better faster. Dr. Davis is really good."

Hearing this, the kids' expressions softened. They'd been following Sophie's instructions to change the towel on their mom's forehead, but her fever hadn't gone down. They felt helpless.

Dr. Davis's warm smile reassured them. After a moment, they reluctantly stepped aside, letting Donovan and Dr. Davis in.

Donovan sighed in relief and followed the kids upstairs.

Upstairs, Riley had been waiting, wondering why the kids hadn't come back. Just as she was about to ask Sophie to check, she saw the kids at the door. Their faces said it all—Donovan was here. Only he could turn their happy faces somber. But why now?

Her fever was likely from getting caught in the rain last night, thanks to Donovan. Despite telling him to stay away, he showed up when she was most vulnerable. Riley felt conflicted, unsure how to deal with him now. She even hoped he was just here to take Finley back.
