Chapter 351 Heavy Heart

Alexander checked in on Finley, made sure she was okay, and then took off before dinner.

Donovan hung out in the study for a bit, then grabbed his phone to call Zoey.

He'd dropped Finley off at kindergarten himself that morning. If Finley ended up alone, it had to be something that happened there. Zoey would know what went down.

When Zoey picked up, she sounded on edge. She went over the day's events in detail. "After I dropped Finley off, I left. Ms. Monroe said she'd bring Finley back. Didn't she?" Zoey's voice wavered a bit.

Zoey was kicking herself. She'd taken Finley to Riley's place without Donovan's consent and left her there alone. No matter her reasons, it was a bad move—especially now that Finley had come home alone and upset.

"Yeah, she did," Donovan said, his eyes getting darker. He decided to dig a little more. "How's Winston doing?"

Zoey felt a bit better knowing Riley had brought Finley back. She quickly answered, "He's getting better and should be back in class in a few days."

Donovan replied in a low voice, "Got it. Thanks."

Zoey apologized a bunch before hanging up.

Donovan sat there, still holding his phone, feeling a mix of emotions. He hadn't seen Riley since their last run-in at the coffee shop. She'd been avoiding him, probably because of something his mom said. He'd only heard about Winston being sick through the grapevine, and details on his recovery were sketchy. Even if he called Riley, she'd probably shut him down.

He smirked sarcastically. According to Zoey, Riley had likely brought Finley back today. Knowing her, she wouldn't have just left Finley halfway. She must've brought Finley to the estate gate and then left without coming in—that was why Olivia hadn't seen her. Riley was definitely still avoiding him.

A knock on the study door snapped him out of his thoughts. Olivia's careful voice came through. "Mr. Wilder, dinner's ready."

Donovan cleared his throat, pulling himself together. "I'll be right there," he said, heading to Finley's room to get her for dinner.

Finley came out quickly, looking a bit down. Donovan slowed his pace, walking behind her, feeling a bit heavy-hearted.

Finley had gone to Riley's place today, so she should've been happy. But seeing her so glum, Donovan wondered what Riley might've said to her. She'd promised not to drag the kid into their issues.

Downstairs, Donovan sat next to Finley and casually asked, "Where'd you go today?"

Finley hesitated, then shook her head, clearly not wanting to share. Donovan frowned, getting more suspicious that Riley had said something to upset her. He was lost in thought when he felt a small tug on his sleeve.

Looking down, he saw Finley's pleading eyes. "I want to eat the vegetables," she said softly, pointing to the dish just out of her reach.

Donovan blinked in surprise. Since the whole disappearance thing, this was the first time Finley had talked to him about something other than Riley.
