Chapter 299 Feeling Apprehensive

Paxton noticed Riley seemed off but couldn't figure out why. He saw Donovan's missed call and quickly walked over to her.

"Didn't you bring an umbrella? Where's your car? Mr. Wilder will take a while; I'll take you first."

He started to open his umbrella.

Riley stopped him. "No need, I'm waiting for someone."

Paxton nodded and stood beside her.

Riley really didn't want to see Donovan. With the heavy rain and knowing he'd take a while, she quietly walked away from Paxton, hoping to leave before Donovan came out.

Just as she was about to step into the rain, Paxton's voice called out.

"Mr. Wilder, you..."

His voice cut off, and Riley felt a chill behind her. Panicking, she stepped into the rain.

A black umbrella appeared over her head, and a large hand grabbed her wrist, pulling her back to the hotel entrance.

"Are you crazy?" Donovan's voice was full of displeasure.

He had hurried down, guessing Riley would avoid him after hearing Paxton's greeting.

Seeing her willing to rush into the rain to avoid him, Donovan found it ironic.

Riley lowered her eyes to compose herself. When she looked up, she was calm. "Mr. Wilder, what a coincidence."

The rain masked the smell of alcohol, but a faint scent was detectable when she spoke.

Donovan frowned. "Have you been drinking?"

Riley nodded. "Just a little at a work gathering."

Donovan's deep voice followed, "I'll take you home."

He still held her wrist.

Riley struggled but couldn't break free, looking displeased. "No need, the person I'm waiting for is here. I can go back myself. Let go, Mr. Wilder."

Donovan exposed her lie. "Who are you waiting for? A driver? With so many people here, how did your driver arrive so quickly?"

Riley was momentarily speechless but forced herself to respond, "I called early. There are many people here. Let go, Mr. Wilder. I don't want any trouble."

Donovan's eyes darkened, and he let go.

Riley nodded distantly and quickly walked into the rain.

Donovan followed, tilting the umbrella more towards her.

"Your injury hasn't healed. I'll take you over," Donovan's voice echoed in the rain.

Riley didn't look back and walked faster, trying to ditch him.

"The ground is slippery, walk slowly," Donovan reminded with a frown.

Even though he held the umbrella for her, the rain was heavy, and Riley felt cold. She wanted to shiver but gritted her teeth, responding coldly, "If you could stay away, I'd walk slower."

Donovan finally slowed down and stopped.

Without the umbrella, the rain poured on Riley, chilling her to the bone.

She forced herself to the parking lot, opened the car door, and sat in the back seat, waiting for the driver, her mind a mess.

She wondered if it was fate. The more she tried to avoid Donovan, the more she ran into him.

And Donovan's attitude towards her made her increasingly anxious.
