Chapter 398 Have I Offended You in Some Way?

The car went dead quiet, and it was obvious the vibe had totally changed since Dalton left.

Riley sat up straight, staring ahead, trying hard to ignore Donovan next to her. But she couldn't shake the feeling that ever since Dalton got out, Donovan's eyes had been glued to her, making her tense up.

Out of nowhere, Donovan's smooth voice cut through the silence. "Ms. Monroe, did I do something to upset you?"

Hearing his voice, Riley actually felt a bit relieved and forced a distant smile. "Why would you think that, Mr. Wilder?"

Donovan gave her a long look, his tone a bit annoyed. "If not, why are you avoiding me like this?"

Riley frowned slightly, pretending to be puzzled. "When did I avoid you? Honestly, we don't even cross paths much; our work doesn't overlap."

In other words, apart from work, they had no personal connection. In fact, they didn't even have any work-related interactions. They barely had any reason to meet, let alone talk about avoiding each other.

As her words hung in the air, the tension in the car ramped up. Paxton, who was driving, glanced nervously at the two in the back through the rearview mirror, feeling a bit worried for Riley. Knowing Donovan was ticked off, why did Riley have to push his buttons?

As he fretted, he saw Donovan lower the partition between the front and back seats. Paxton quickly looked away, not daring to pay attention to what was happening in the back anymore.

Seeing Donovan lower the partition, Riley's heart skipped a beat. She instinctively turned to the side, pressing her back against the car window, trying to put some space between them.

Donovan narrowed his eyes in annoyance and coldly asked, "Riley, since you said I haven't upset you, why are you avoiding me now? Do you think I'm going to eat you or something?"

Riley frowned slightly, her eyes showing a hint of caution, and replied distantly, "I just feel like we don't know each other well, and your actions are a bit sudden for me."

Seeing the caution on her face, Donovan smirked sarcastically. "What do you think I want to do?"

Riley went silent, thinking of the kiss at the hotel when she first got back to the country. It was the only time Donovan had ever taken the initiative with her since they met. But it was at a time when she no longer needed it. The current situation felt weirdly similar to that day.

Donovan looked at her deeply, his eyes stormy. Since they parted at the café last time, Riley had been avoiding him, even having the kids' nanny pick up and drop off Landon and Winston. Until today, Dalton found an excuse, giving him a chance to see Riley again. But the whole evening, Riley had been keeping her distance from him, not even willing to say a word to him.

Donovan thought he could understand her thoughts, but when they actually met and saw Riley treating him like this, he felt a burning anger. He had originally wanted to vent by drinking, and now, fueled by the alcohol, his anger was even more intense.

Riley clearly felt the increasing pressure from Donovan. Her hand unconsciously clenched at her side, her fingertips digging into her palm, barely keeping the panic in her heart at bay.
