Chapter 159 A Seamless Pair
At the mention of Donovan and Hollis's engagement, Dalton shifted his gaze back to Riley, who remained a silent observer on the sidelines.
Riley's eyes cast downward, a subtle veil over her emotions, yet a faint smile played on her lips. In that moment, Dalton found deciphering Riley's thoughts a challenge.
Meanwhile, Mia's unwavering focus rested on Riley, catching the fleeting shift in her expression when her mother broached Donovan's engagement.
Witnessing Riley's emotional nuances, Mia's excitement heightened, echoing her mother with added fervor. "Totally, Donovan and Hollis are like a puzzle piece. Even without an official event, they're part of the family fabric, no questions asked."
With deliberate arrogance, Mia shot Riley a pointed look.
Having already contemplated this turn of events, Catherine smiled upon their remarks, concurring, "It's been a long time coming. Lately, both our families have been mulling over their engagement. We should schedule a proper sit-down to discuss it soon."
Mia geared up to delve deeper into the topic when Donovan's voice cut in abruptly, tinged with restraint.
"Daniel, today's about you and your birthday. Let's steer clear of my affairs."
Daniel, briefly taken aback, regarded Donovan and Hollis, assuming their aversion to the topic stemmed from embarrassment. He graciously redirected the conversation elsewhere, and the younger crew wisely avoided reopening the subject.
Riley inexplicably felt a sense of calm wash over her as her heart rate eased, secretly exhaling a breath of relief. However, the ensuing conversations seemed detached from her, leaving her feeling somewhat adrift. After enduring the small talk for a while, restlessness gnawed at Riley, urging her to seek a quiet retreat.
"Mr. Benedict, I'm feeling a bit worn out. If there's nothing else, I might find a cozy corner to unwind." Seizing a moment of reprieve, Riley interjected softly.
Concern laced Daniel's gaze. "Feeling okay? Not under the weather?"
Riley chuckled sheepishly. "Nothing serious, just these high heels taking a toll. Need to give my feet a break."
Seeing her plight, Daniel nodded understandingly, granting her permission to retreat.
Riley bid her farewells courteously, then made her way towards a secluded nook. Despite her departure, she couldn't shake the feeling of Donovan's lingering gaze following her. Unconsciously tensing, she quickened her step.
"Daniel, I'll go mingle too."
Donovan watched as Riley settled on a nearby couch, sensing eyes lingering on her. A shadow crossed his features briefly.
Perplexed, Daniel queried, "What's the rush?"
Given the Wilder family's status, even the distinguished guests at today's party would be the ones to greet Donovan. Hence, Donovan simply stood his ground. His unprovoked initiative seemed unusual
Brows knit, Donovan struggled to find a plausible excuse.
Yet Catherine, attuned to his intentions, intercepted gracefully, looping her arm through his. "A few esteemed elders have business ties with us over yonder. Your presence there is warranted."
Following her gesture, Donovan spotted the respected elders in question. After a brief pause, he conceded.
Catching Catherine's knowing gaze, Hollis played her part, "Familiar faces indeed. I was just mulling over the same greeting."
With a smile, Hollis shadowed Donovan. Donovan, unable to deter her without cause, silently permitted her company.
To onlookers, the duo appeared a seamless pair.
