Chapter 147 Feeling Heartache

Donovan thought Riley was only angry because the kids were upset, so he apologized and agreed. "I didn't know before, but now I do. Don't worry. I won't bring it up in front of them again."

Riley glanced at the three kids silently playing with Legos and then thought about how Donovan had mentioned their father to Landon and Winstonwithout her knowing. She felt a wave of fear and directly said to Donovan, "It's getting late, Mr. Wilder. You should head back. Thank you for picking up the kids today."

Donovan hesitated for a moment, nodded, and turned to leave.

On his way back, he felt a heavy weight in his heart but couldn't figure out why.

When he got home, he irritably loosened his tie and sat on the couch for a while, still feeling uneasy.

After a while, he got up, took a bottle of wine from the cabinet, and started drinking by the window.

After two glasses, the scene at the dinner table tonight began to replay in Donovan's mind. 'Landon and Winston asked me why I didn't like them, with both grievance and indignation.'

Thinking of their expressions and tone, Donovan felt as if something had twisted his heart, causing a sharp pain.

After Donovan left, Riley walked over to the kids, played with them for a while, and then sent them upstairs to bed.

After putting Finley to sleep, Riley hesitated for a moment and then knocked on the door of Landon and Winston's room.

They were still awake, feeling upset about what had happened that evening.

"Mommy, is something wrong?" Landon opened the door and asked puzzledly when he saw who it was.

Riley patted Landon's head and said, "Mommy wants to talk to you. Let's go inside."

Landon obediently nodded and walked back to the bed. He was wearing cow-print pajamas, with a few strands of soft hair sticking up rebelliously, making his back look very cute.

Riley's heart softened. She closed the door, sat down by the bed, and gently asked, "Did Mr. Wilder ask you about your daddy tonight?"

Landon and Winston nodded obediently.

Landon added in his baby voice, "We said we don't have a daddy and we don't like daddy."

Hearing this, Riley's heart tightened, feeling a bit of dull pain.

Landon's tone was clearly a bit sad.

Because Riley had always kept their background a secret, they really thought they didn't have a daddy.

But if they found out that Donovan, who had been with them day and night these past few days, was their daddy, who knew what they would think?

"Do you... feel different from other kids? Do you want a daddy?" Riley hesitated and asked.

Both Landon and Winston shook their heads and said, "No."

Riley frowned slightly. "But..." They were clearly upset about this tonight.

Each of the two kids hugged one of Riley's arms, their little faces full of seriousness. "Even though we don't have a daddy, we have Mommy. Our Mommy is the best in the world. No one can compare. Others are envious of us!"

After saying this, as if to prove something, Winston looked at Riley with innocent eyes. "Finley has a daddy, but doesn't she still like Mommy more? Mommy is the best, and we don't need a daddy."

Riley felt both soft and pained in her heart. She hugged them tightly, unable to speak for a long time.
