Chapter 348 Wait for Us
Finley was in a daze, barely able to grasp that Riley was leaving. The thought of Riley going abroad and maybe never coming back made her cry even harder.
Riley tried to give a comforting smile as she patted Finley's head. "This might be the last time you see me, Finley. Don't cry. Try to smile more, okay?"
Finley shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "Auntie Riley, don't go..."
Riley let her cry, gently comforting her when the sobs started to fade. "Get better soon. When you grow up, you can come visit me abroad."
Finley seemed to get that she couldn't stop Riley from leaving. Hearing that she could see Riley again someday gave her a bit of hope. She asked, "Really?"
Riley nodded with a smile. "Really."
Finley frowned, still doubtful. "But when I grow up, you won't remember me."
Riley shook her head, looking serious. "How could I forget you? You're so adorable."
Landon and Winston jumped in, trying to reassure her too. "We'll remember you too, Finley. You need to get better soon!"
Hearing them, Finley was quiet for a moment before nodding and wiping her tears. "I won't cry anymore." If this was their last time together, she wanted Riley to remember her smiling, not crying.
With that thought, Finley forced a smile, even though her eyes were red and her lips were trembling.
Riley's heart ached at the sight, but she kept her tone light. "Let's play some Lego, okay? Then I'll take you back."
The kids nodded. Maybe because they knew they'd be apart soon, Landon and Winston were extra nice to Finley.
The boys built slowly, watching Finley's hands. Whenever she needed something, they immediately helped her, almost wanting to build it for her.
Finley, on the other hand, was a bit distracted, glancing at the time now and then.
By four in the afternoon, Riley knew it was time. "It's about time. I'll take Finley back," she said, trying to sound firm despite her reluctance.
The kids put down their Legos right away. Finley tried to smile at her, but Riley could see the sadness in her eyes, making the smile look forced.
Riley sighed inwardly, feeling guilty. Finley was so young, so innocent, yet she was Donovan's child.
Landon and Winston got up and hugged Finley tightly. "We'll still see each other at kindergarten. Wait for us!"
Finley's eyes lit up again, and she nodded eagerly at Landon and Winston.
Riley stood up, took Finley's hand, and led her out the door. On the way to the Wilder Family Estate, Riley's mood was complicated, and she was almost silent the whole way. Finley, sitting in the back, was also very quiet.
It wasn't until Riley stopped the car outside the Wilder Family Estate that Finley spoke up cautiously. "Auntie Riley, is it because of Daddy that you have to go abroad?"
Riley was taken aback. She paused for a moment before responding, offering Finley a calm smile. "No, I came back for work. Once that's done, I have to leave."
