Chapter 402 Do You Have These Dreams Every Night?

When Donovan got back to the Wilder Estate, it was already super late. Finley had hit the hay early, and Donovan couldn't shake the heartache when he realized Riley hadn't even mentioned Finley earlier. Without thinking twice, he headed upstairs to Finley's room.

Finley was out cold, her tiny head tilted to one side, half her face buried in the blanket, looking all peaceful and stuff.

Donovan's eyes softened. He reached out to gently touch her head and tucked her in before getting up to leave.

Just as he reached the door, a soft sob from Finley stopped him in his tracks. Donovan turned back to the bedside, carefully pulling the blanket away from her face. Her little face was scrunched up, eyes tightly closed, and her long, curved eyelashes were wet with tears. She was having a nightmare.

Donovan's heart ached at the sight. He raised his hand to wipe away her tears, trying to soothe her even in her sleep.

"Aunt Riley... don't go..." Finley mumbled, her voice trembling.

Hearing this, Donovan's brow furrowed deeply. These past few days, he thought himself diligent, putting Finley to bed, checking on her in the middle of the night. Yet, how many times had she had such distressing dreams without him knowing? The realization that Finley missed Riley so much while Riley remained indifferent gnawed at Donovan. Even knowing about Finley's condition, Riley had shown no concern at all.

As his mood darkened, Finley's sobs grew louder. Donovan was snapped back to reality, his heart breaking as her cries filled the room. He carefully picked her up, blanket and all, clumsily patting her back.

"Finley, it's okay, I'm here," he murmured, trying to comfort her.

But Finley's cries didn't subside. "No, don't go..." she sobbed, clinging to him.

Donovan's grip tightened around her, his frustration with himself growing. How had he not heard her crying so badly before? Moments passed in heavy sorrow and self-blame. Finally, Finley began to stir awake, her little fingers clutching his shirt as her tears soaked through the fabric.

Donovan didn't mind. He gently asked, "Finley, don't cry. I'm here. Can you tell me what you dreamed about?"

Finley, still not fully awake, whimpered Riley's name and occasionally called out for Landon and Winston. There was no need to ask; it was clear she had dreamed of Riley leaving with Landon and Winston.

Donovan couldn't bear to ask further. He tightened his arms around Finley, holding her close.

After a long while, Finley finally woke up fully. She placed her small hands on Donovan's shoulders, pulling away enough to see his face. Donovan released one hand to gently wipe her tears.

"Did you dream about Aunt Riley?" he asked softly.

Finley nodded solemnly, her eyes still red.

She had dreamed of Riley boarding a plane with Landon and Winston. No matter how much she called out to them, they ignored her. She could only chase the plane on the ground but couldn't catch up and even fell.

Thinking of the scene in her dream, her eyes reddened again.

"Sweetie, she hasn't left yet. I just saw her," Donovan suppressed his dissatisfaction with Riley and gently comforted Finley.

Finley suspiciously leaned in, sniffing as if she could really smell Riley's scent, and her little face gradually relaxed.

Donovan asked with concern, "Finley, do you have these dreams every night?"

Finley shook her head, lips pressed together.
