Chapter 311 The Car Accident
The car rolled to a stop in the parking lot near the commercial street. Hollis hooked her arm through Catherine's as they strolled out of the lot. They wandered around the street, and Hollis didn't mention Donovan at all, like she was totally over the whole marriage thing.
By noon, they were lugging big shopping bags out of the mall. "I found this restaurant online with killer reviews. Thought you might dig it," Hollis said with a grin.
Catherine just nodded, not really committing.
The restaurant wasn't on the busy street, so they had to drive a bit. They grabbed their bags and headed back to the parking lot, ready for some good eats. Just as they got to the lot entrance, a car came out of nowhere, making them jump. They quickly sidestepped to dodge it.
At first, they thought the car was just leaving, but then it suddenly reversed and sped towards them. With nowhere to go, they were cornered. The car was coming at them fast, and they scrambled to get out of the way, hearts pounding.
In the chaos, Catherine's grip slipped, and all the bags hit the ground. She shut her eyes instinctively. She heard Hollis yell, "Watch out, Auntie!" and felt a hand yank her out of the way. She stumbled but managed to stay on her feet.
The car's speed left her mind blank, and she was dazed by what just happened. A cry of pain snapped her back to reality. The car had screeched to a stop, almost sideways. Hollis was on the ground, pale and clutching her shoulder, looking seriously hurt.
"Hollis!" Catherine rushed over, squatting down to check on her. "Are you okay? I'll call an ambulance!"
Hollis forced a smile through the pain. "As long as you're okay, no need for an ambulance. I don't think... it's that bad. Don't worry." She tried to stand but her arm wouldn't cooperate. She managed to lift herself a bit before collapsing back down, even paler.
Catherine carefully helped her up, worry all over her face. "You must've hurt your bone. It's my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be hurt," she said, guilt-ridden.
Hollis winced, clutching her arm, unable to find the right words. She glared at the car still parked there, her eyes cold. "You hit someone and don't even come out to apologize?"
The parking lot was dead quiet, but her weak voice still echoed. Catherine snapped back to reality, looked at the driver's seat, and was about to speak when the car started up again. Remembering the danger, fear crossed her face.
The car turned and sped towards the exit. By the time Catherine reacted, it was gone. She was about to call the cops when Hollis grabbed her arm.
"Auntie, is my arm broken?" Hollis's eyes were red, her voice barely a whisper.
Seeing Hollis so vulnerable, Catherine pushed aside thoughts of the hit-and-run driver. Without hesitation, she got Hollis into the car and drove her to the hospital.
