Chapter 209 Don't let your imagination run wild
"Mom, are you feeling down?"
On the way back, the kids looked at her with concern.
Riley was a bit taken aback.
She had thought she had hidden her feelings well, but the kids had noticed.
"What's wrong?" Riley asked casually, glancing at them in the rearview mirror.
Landon frowned, his little face full of confusion. "You didn't pay attention to Finley just now. Did Uncle Donovan upset you again?"
Hearing Donovan's name, Riley felt a bit conflicted.
She hadn't realized how close she had gotten to Donovan lately, making the kids misunderstand.
Winston chimed in, "Finley was almost crying just now."
Riley frowned, her heart tightening.
She could imagine Finley's pitiful look, even though she hadn't seen it herself.
If she could, Riley would have said goodbye to Finley.
But because of what Hollis said, she felt it was necessary to cut ties with Donovan.
Riley wouldn't interfere with the kids' relationships, but she could control herself.
Thinking this, Riley pretended to look indifferently at the kids in the back, and replied evasively, "From now on, come out earlier after school. I've been really busy with work lately. Sophie will pick you up."
The kids didn't get the answer they wanted, exchanged a suspicious glance, but still nodded obediently.
After getting home, Riley had just walked in with the kids when the doorbell rang again.
Riley was startled for a moment and turned to open the door.
Harper stood at the entrance with an unpleasant expression, about to say something, but seeing the kids inside, she held back.
"What's wrong?" Riley stepped aside to let her in.
Harper took a deep breath, suppressing her anger. "We'll talk later!"
Riley didn't press further and invited Harper to stay for dinner.
After dinner, watching the kids go upstairs, Harper finally couldn't hold back, "I saw yesterday's news. What the hell is Donovan thinking!"
Riley hadn't expected her to come for this and didn't know how to respond.
"If he's already decided to marry Hollis, he shouldn't be bothering you!" Harper said, slamming the table in frustration, "I thought he had finally figured things out when he came to see you before!"
She had always known about Donovan and Hollis's engagement. When their upcoming marriage was exposed last time, Harper hadn't cared.
Living just a wall away from Riley, Harper had seen how often Donovan visitedrecently. Even with the recent news, she had made excuses for him in her mind, doubting if it was truly Donovan's intention.
But yesterday's news made Harper very angry.
If Donovan was so good to Hollis, why was he bothering Riley!
What a douchebag!
Riley was already feeling troubled, and hearing this made her feel even more bitter. "He's supposed to marry Hollis. Don't overthink it."
Seeing Riley's expression, Harper belatedly realized.
After this news broke, the person most affected should be Riley. Complaining so much in front of her might make her feel worse.
Harper suppressed her displeasure, and stood up, grabbing Riley's wrist. "Come on, let's go drink! To hell with those men!"
