Chapter 287 The Compensation That Should Be

Hearing Donovan constantly blame Hollis, Catherine frowned. "Hollis already feels bad. She just came back yesterday and apologized. Why are you still going on about it?"

She glanced at Finley, who was hiding behind Donovan, silently crying with tears streaming down her face.

Seeing Finley like this, Catherine's heart softened. "Finley, don't cry. Are you hurt?"

Finley, still fond of her grandmother, nodded with a sob.

"You wouldn't ask that if you knew where we found Finley," Donovan said, looking seriously at Catherine.

Catherine was puzzled. The phone calls yesterday were rushed, and she didn't get the details.

Donovan shot a cold glance at Hollis and told Catherine, "We found Finley in the deep woods near the botanical garden. She fell into a big pit and stayed there all night. Do you think she wouldn't be hurt?"

These words were meant for both Catherine and Hollis. He was hoping Hollis would take the hint and leave.

Hearing about Finley's ordeal, Catherine's expression changed. She bent down to hold Finley, comforting her. "Finley, you've suffered. Don't run off like that again."

Finley didn't resist, staying obediently in her arms but continued to sob despite Catherine's efforts to comfort her.

After a while, seeing Hollis on the verge of tears, Catherine felt a bit sorry for her. She said to Donovan, "Hollis meant well. She wanted to get a bigger room for you and Finley. She didn't expect Finley to get so upset. Now that Finley is back safe, don't blame her anymore."

Donovan frowned but stayed silent.

"And besides, Hollis said you're living with Riley. What's that about? You're about to get engaged, and everyone in H City knows about your engagement to Hollis. If this gets out, how do you expect Hollis to face people?"

Seeing Donovan's unmoved expression, Catherine's heart sank. "Or are you planning to let that woman into the house? We've made it clear that I will never accept her. I think Finley's disappearance has something to do with her!"

As soon as she finished, she felt Finley's chest heaving more violently.

Catherine looked down worriedly and saw Finley crying so hard she was gasping for breath, even struggling to get out of her arms.

It was obvious it was because she had spoken ill of Riley.

Realizing this, Catherine's face showed displeasure. "I don't know what's so good about that woman. Finley can't be without her and can't even hear a word against her! If she knew about the past, I wonder if she'd still feel the same!"

If Finley weren't so young, Catherine would have already told her how Riley abandoned her as a baby!

Hearing his mother hint at the past, Donovan coldly interrupted. "This has nothing to do with Riley! Last night, if Riley hadn't gone into the mountains to look for her, Finley would have had to spend another night in the woods!"

Catherine didn't expect this and was momentarily at a loss for words. After a few seconds of silence, she reluctantly said, "That was her duty!"

Years ago, Riley had abandoned Finley as a baby. Last night's incident was just the compensation she owed Finley!
