Chapter 378 Feeling Uneasy
Seeing the kids looking so down, Riley stayed quiet for a long time. Fortunately, the kids knew that Riley was also reluctant to part with Finley. After being sad for a while, they settled down and nibbled at their food.
After dinner, Riley was wiped out, and the kids weren't up for any games either, so they all headed upstairs to crash early.
Once the kids were asleep, Riley gently touched their cheeks and whispered, "I'm sorry."
Because of her, her kids had to move around so much at such a young age. They deserved a better life. If she told Donovan about the kids, they'd be living it up as part of the wealthy Wilder family.
But she kept them close out of selfishness. Even though she worked her butt off to make it up to them, she still felt like it wasn't enough.
Staring at their sleeping faces for a while, Riley kissed their foreheads, turned off the lights, and left the room.
As the door clicked shut, the kids opened their eyes and looked at each other in the dark. They hadn't been asleep and had heard Riley's apology.
They thought, 'Mommy says sorry, but we don't think she did anything wrong.'
Meanwhile, Riley went back to her room, washed up briefly, and lay down. She thought she'd pass out right away after such a long day, but as soon as she closed her eyes, her mind was flooded with images.
From her talk with Catherine at the coffee shop, to Finley crying and begging her not to leave, to the boys' sad faces just now.
Riley felt both ironic and powerless. She had worked so hard over the years, thinking she had become strong enough, but in front of the Wilder family, she was still so vulnerable. Soon, she would have to leave this city again because of them.
She didn't know how long it took before she finally drifted off.
The next morning, when the alarm went off, Riley had a killer headache. But remembering that the Benedict Group's herbs were coming that morning, she dragged herself out of bed and got ready, still feeling groggy.
When she went downstairs, the kids were already having breakfast. Seeing Riley, they remembered her apology from the night before.
But since she had waited until they were "asleep" to say it, she probably didn't want them to know.
The kids didn't ask, but seeing Riley's face, they asked with concern, "Mommy, did you not sleep well?"
Riley was caught off guard.
"Your dark circles are really noticeable," Landon added, his little face serious and worried.
Hearing this, Riley realized and smiled at the kids. "I drank too much coffee while working last night and couldn't sleep. Thanks for looking out for me, my good boys."
Landon and Winston exchanged a doubtful glance but didn't push it, just showing their concern a few more times before quieting down.
After breakfast, Riley asked Sophie to take them to kindergarten, then hurried back upstairs to touch up her makeup and drove to the research institute.
On the way, Riley felt a bit uneasy. Although Dalton had assured her yesterday, unless she saw the herbs with her own eyes, Riley wouldn't feel at ease. After all, the previous suppliers had also run into problems on delivery day, and it was only when they called that the suppliers explained the situation.
