Chapter 352 His Position Was No Better than Riley's
Finley noticed Donovan wasn't reacting, so she nudged her plate toward him, her little face full of expectation.
Donovan snapped out of his thoughts and reached over to serve her some veggies.
Finley dug in, eating more enthusiastically than usual.
When she was almost done, she wiped her mouth and got ready to head upstairs. Donovan's deep voice stopped her. "Finley."
She paused and turned back, looking at him with confusion.
Donovan met her gaze, his expression complicated. "Did you go to Riley's house today?"
Finley's lips pressed together, and she looked down, clearly not planning to tell the truth.
Donovan got up, walked over, and scooped her onto the sofa, holding her close. "I called Ms. Scott. She told me everything."
Finley frowned. "I hate her," she muttered. Zoey had promised not to tell Donovan.
Donovan smoothed the frown from her forehead. "Ms. Scott did the right thing. You're my daughter, and I need to know what's going on with you. Olivia said you came back alone, and I was worried. I had to ask Ms. Scott. She was shocked too."
Finley looked a bit guilty and whispered, "I didn't come back by myself."
Donovan wasn't surprised. He patted her head gently. "I know Riley brought you back. I explained it to Ms. Scott."
Finley seemed to relax a bit.
"Why couldn't you tell me you were going to Riley's house?" Donovan asked, looking at her with a suspicion he didn't want to admit.
Finley shook her head silently.
Donovan's frown deepened, but he softened his voice. "Did she tell you to do this?"
Finley quickly shook her head and looked up anxiously. "It was my idea!"
Her constant silence and defense of Riley made Donovan's head ache. He sighed, "Why? Do you think I would stop you from seeing Riley?"
Finley looked down, saying nothing.
A long, heavy silence stretched between them. It felt like something had happened without his knowledge. Ever since meeting those two boys at Riley's house, they'd been more resistant to him, and it had recently peaked.
That would've been fine, but now even Finley was hiding things. She didn't know about his past with Riley but instinctively relied on and defended her. Donovan even suspected that, in Finley's heart, he ranked lower than Riley.
After a long silence, Donovan was about to give up when Finley's soft voice broke through. "Auntie Riley doesn't like Daddy."
Donovan's brow furrowed deeply. Finley looked up at him with some resentment. "Auntie Riley will drive Daddy away."
Though she didn't finish, Donovan could guess the rest. If he knew Finley went to see Riley, he'd probably follow. And lately, Riley had been really distant. If she saw him coming, she'd definitely drive him away—and Finley too.
