Chapter 417 We're Even
After Ralph and the others took off, it was just Donovan and Riley left in the hallway.
Donovan still had a tight grip on Riley's wrist.
Seeing he wasn't letting go, Riley stayed cool and said, "Everyone's gone, Mr. Wilder. You can let go now. I'm not going anywhere."
Donovan stared at her for a few seconds before finally loosening his grip.
Riley frowned, rubbed her sore wrist, took a couple of steps back, and locked eyes with Donovan. "Is there something else, Mr. Wilder?"
Donovan's brow furrowed sharply at her words.
He had saved her, but she didn't even thank him.
"Ms. Monroe, I help you out again, and this is the thanks I get?" Donovan's voice was icy.
Riley's lips twisted into a sarcastic smile. "Help me? If Mr. Wilder really wanted to help me, you wouldn't have said those things to Ralph just now. You were just having fun at my expense. No need to make your actions sound so noble."
The air between them got tense.
Donovan's eyes flashed with anger, but remembering his impulsive words earlier, he had no defense.
After a moment of silence, Riley took his silence as agreement, and the sarcasm on her face deepened. She nodded at him distantly, "Seems like Mr. Wilder has had his fun, so I should be able to leave now."
With that, she turned to go.
Just as she turned, Donovan's deep voice stopped her, "What about that guy with you?"
Riley paused and turned back, confused, "Who?"
"Weren't you compromising with me just to see him? Why didn't he come to save you just now?" Donovan squinted, his gaze sharp.
It took Riley a moment to connect the dots and realize that the guy he was talking about was Adam.
What did this have to do with Adam?
Seeing her confused expression, Donovan continued, "Ms. Monroe came to the party with me, then left with Mr. Smith, and I heard Mr. Rogers took you to socialize. In such a short time, you've been with three different men. You really are popular."
He then looked her up and down and added coldly, "Oh, and there was another guy just now. Ms. Monroe is more popular than I thought."
Hearing him use Ralph to provoke her, Riley's face darkened. "Are you spying on me?"
She had only been at the party with Adam for a few minutes, during which Donovan should have been busy with his clients. He couldn't notice them.
Unless the so-called clients didn't exist at all!
Thinking of this, Riley was filled with suspicion.
Donovan sneered, "Ms. Monroe is so noticeable and attended the event with me. Naturally, people would talk about you. Do I need to spy on you? Or does Ms. Monroe think you are so special to me that I would specifically monitor you?"
The implication was that Riley was being delusional.
Riley's eyes trembled slightly, and a wave of self-mockery surged in her heart.
Indeed, what in her relationship with Donovan was worth keeping an eye on?
Perhaps he had just happened to see her with Adam.
Moreover, their appearance together at the party did cause a stir, so his explanation wasn't entirely impossible.
Thinking of this, Riley's emotions gradually calmed down. She lowered her eyes and said softly, "In that case, I misunderstood you. However, given how you treated me just now, I think we're even."
