Chapter 161 Jealous to Death
Riley offered a gentle apology, “Sorry, I haven't quite been feeling up to it lately.”
Her declined offer was gracefully handled. Although the man seemed slightly let down, he didn't press the matter and turned to depart.
As serenity settled once more, Riley prepared to gather her thoughts when a distinctive male voice broke the silence.
"Riley? Is that really you?"
At the sound, Riley raised her gaze towards the voice, spotting a man in a sophisticated iron-gray tailcoat a few paces away, regarding her with evident surprise. Their eyes locked, mutual astonishment coloring their expressions. "Adam? What a chance encounter!" Riley asked.
Adam Smith, a former schoolmate from abroad, was a standout figure among the global younger generation. Upon her initial departure overseas, Adam had provided Riley with invaluable assistance, fostering a strong bond between them. Subsequent to her return, Riley's routines at the research institute had consumed her focus, precluding any contact with him.
Reassured in his recognition, Adam's smile widened as he hastened over. "Long time no see."
Returning the smile, Riley responded, "It has been a while. When did you return, and why the radio silence?"
Adam, appraising her with warmth, remarked, "I've been back for a fortnight. I was afraid of disturbing you. You seem to have shed some weight. Is the workload here overwhelming?"
Offering a noncommittal smile, Riley replied, "A tad."
While the research institute duties were demanding, they paled in comparison to her responsibilities back abroad. The true culprits behind her weight loss were her trio of children at home—a detail best kept private from Adam.
Adam regarded Riley with concern. "I know you're dedicated, but self-care is important. Don't burn yourself out."
Riley nodded agreeably.
"By the way, why are you here? You've just returned and already in cahoots with the Benedict Group?" Adam inquired with a grin.
Caught off guard by the inquiry, Riley composed herself, considering the attendees at the current celebration before shaking her head with a smile, "I've only just returned. How would I manage that? It so happened that I treated Mr. Benedict and ended up here by chance. Speaking of collaboration, the Benedicts are now suppliers for our research institute."
Adam's eyes widened in surprise. "I heard Mr. Benedict's case was dire, stumping many renowned physicians. Recently, news of his recovery spread, and I pondered on the brilliant mind behind it. Little did I know, it was you!"
Modestly, Riley replied, "It was merely a stroke of luck aligning with my expertise."
Arching an eyebrow, Adam praised, "Don't downplay it. Your talents are widely acknowledged. Since it was you who cured Mr. Benedict, my admiration for you has only grown."
Thanking him with a laugh, Riley accepted the compliment. The pair delved into a cheerful conversation regarding Daniel's health and their respective medical domains.
Observing from a distance, Donovan's gaze lingered on Riley engrossed in dialogue with yet another gentleman, his demeanor darkening with unmistakable displeasure, casting a chill over the surroundings.
Dalton, noticing Donovan's reaction, surmised the cause of his unease and inquired, "Donovan, shall we go over for a closer look?"
