Chapter 318 I'll Think About It
So, right after lunch, Catherine decided to bounce.
"I'm kinda beat too. Gonna head back and crash. Donovan, you stay and keep an eye on her, alright?" She shot Donovan a quick look. "Not much going on at the office now, right?"
Donovan just shrugged.
"Cool, then. Hollis is all yours. Take good care of her," Catherine said, reminding him about Hollis's condition before she dipped out.
As Catherine left, the Alice couple took the hint and bailed too. Now it was just Donovan and Hollis in the room. The vibe got real awkward, real fast.
Hollis clenched her hand, feeling all kinds of pissed. Donovan had always been kinda distant, but this was next level. He didn't even look her way when she got hurt. All because of that witch Riley messing up everything she'd worked for, making her and Donovan so distant!
Just as Hollis was about to break the silence, Donovan spoke up. "If you need anything, just holler. I'll be outside." He gave her a cold look and headed to the sofa in the outer room.
Following his mom's orders, Donovan had snagged Hollis a spot in the hospital's swankiest ward, which had two connected rooms. The inner room was for the patient, decked out with a hospital bed, a bedside table, and some chairs for visitors. It had a cozy vibe with all the essentials. The outer room had a sofa and a long table, looking more like a chill lounge. It was like a fancy hotel room setup.
Donovan said he'd stay in the outer room, which, even though separated by a wall, didn't stop him from taking care of her. But to Hollis, it felt like he was just trying to avoid her.
Realizing this, a flicker of annoyance crossed Hollis's face, but she put on a sad look and called out softly to Donovan, who was already at the door, "Donovan, are you still mad at me..."
Donovan paused, turned back, and gave her a cold stare.
Meeting his eyes, Hollis bit her lip and looked down, "I've really tried my best with Finley all these years. Whatever she wanted, I did my best to give her, but I don't know why she hates me so much."
She glanced at Donovan by the doorway, looking all defeated. "Everything was fine for six years, but lately, Finley's been having a rough time because of me. I've thought about it; it's my fault for not being patient enough with her. If you wanna blame me, I get it. If you wanna call off the engagement, I won't fight it. I just hope, for the sake of our years of friendship, you won't be so cold to me."
Her words hit hard, and Donovan's brows furrowed, his eyes darkening with thought.
Seeing him soften a bit, Hollis's expression got even more sincere. "We've known each other for so long. Even if we can't be together, I don't wanna lose you as a friend. If Finley doesn't like me, I'll stay away from her. I just hope you can treat me like you used to. I've never meant any harm."
After she finished, the room went dead silent. Hollis looked nervously at Donovan by the door. After a while, Donovan finally spoke in a low voice, "I'll think about it."
Then he went to sit in the outer room.
