Chapter 326 I Meant Well

Riley snapped back to reality, shielding the two kids behind her and throwing Hollis a distant smile. "No need to worry, Ms. Sutton. It's just a minor hiccup."

She shot a glance at Donovan and said, "Looks like Mr. Wilder and Ms. Sutton got stuff to handle. We'll bounce."

Without waiting for a reply, Riley grabbed the kids' hands, trying to make a quick exit.

Just a few steps in, Donovan's voice cut through. "Is Landon or Winston not feeling well?"

Donovan's eyes scanned the kids, noticing Winston's pale face and the small hand clutching his stomach. His expression darkened a bit.

Winston spun around, his pale face full of indignation. "It's just a stomachache. Go hang with that Miss and see the doc. Don't sweat us!"

Winston was clearly ticked off. The hospital corridor was dead silent, and his voice echoed down the hallway.

Donovan sensed Winston's hostility, his brows knitting together. What had he done to piss them off? Even though they hadn't seen each other in a while, the kids' hostility seemed to have cranked up a notch.

Riley noticed Winston's voice was a bit loud. She quickly shielded him behind her, softly apologizing to passersby before looking at Donovan and Hollis. "Sorry, Winston's a bit under the weather and cranky. Please, Mr. Wilder and Ms. Sutton, don't take it to heart."

Riley was still uneasy about the kids getting booted from kindergarten last time. Seeing Donovan's concern for Hollis now, she was even more worried that Hollis would find another excuse to target the kids. So, she tried to be as polite as possible to the two of them.

Seeing Riley's attitude, Donovan's face darkened slightly, furrowing his brow without speaking. Riley actually told him not to take it to heart with the kids. Did she think he would do something to them? Hadn't their time together been enough for her to see what kind of person he really was?

Thinking about Riley's view of him, Donovan's face looked a bit grim, and the atmosphere around them got tense. Hollis, standing closest, was the first to feel the pressure. She glanced at Donovan beside her, silently clenching her fingers, but her face stayed kind. Looking at the kids Riley was holding, she asked with concern, "The boy looks pretty pale. Is he really sick?"

She looked up at Riley, casually mentioning, "If needed, I can hook you up with a great pediatrician. Of course, it'd be even better if Donovan helps. The docs he knows are top-notch."

As she finished, Hollis glanced at her own arm in a cast. It was like she was hinting to Riley that Donovan had found her doctor.

Riley caught her drift, giving a cold smile. "No need. I got plenty of medical connections too. Besides, Winston's not that bad off. Thanks for the concern, Ms. Sutton."

She tried to be as polite as possible, but Hollis still frowned, looking at her with some grievance. "I meant well, Ms. Monroe. Why the attitude?"

Riley felt her eyelid twitch, not wanting to deal with her nonsense. She gave a slight smile but didn't respond.
