Chapter 384 To Say or Not to Say
The vibe in the private room suddenly got real tense. Dalton felt a chill run down his spine, unsure if he should keep talking.
"Why do you wanna know?" Donovan shot him a look, eyebrows furrowed.
Dalton cleared his throat, trying to play it cool. "She came by to check on my grandpa yesterday, and it got me thinking about how you two used to be close. Just thought I'd ask. If you guys aren't in touch..." If they weren't in touch, he wouldn't meddle.
Before he could finish, Donovan's eyes went dark. Dalton felt like he was being x-rayed and clammed up, confused. "What's up, Donovan?"
"Are you trying to go after her?" Donovan asked, frowning, a hint of annoyance in his eyes.
Dalton was floored, his mind going blank. Since Donovan walked in, what had he said to give that impression? Sure, Riley was a great woman, but he knew about her history with Donovan. Even if it was ancient history, he wouldn't cross that line.
Plus, when Daniel tried to set them up, Riley had already shot it down. No way was Dalton gonna chase her after that.
But Donovan kept staring at him, clearly suspicious. In his mind, Riley might drive him nuts, but she was still pretty amazing. It wouldn't be shocking if Dalton had a thing for her.
From the moment he walked in, Dalton had been acting all hesitant, like he had something tough to say.
Donovan immediately jumped to conclusions when Dalton mentioned Riley. Just the thought made him irrationally angry, and the tension in the room skyrocketed.
The atmosphere was thick with tension.
It took Dalton a minute to process Donovan's intense question, and he quickly waved his hands. "Whoa, where'd you get that idea? I just noticed Dr. Monroe's lost a lot of weight and remembered how you used to look out for her. I wanted to ask if you two are..."
As he spoke, Dalton made a "split up" gesture, hinting if Donovan was over Riley.
Donovan's face got even colder. "I used to protect her?"
Dalton nodded. "Yeah, when Dr. Monroe was treating my grandpa and at his birthday party, I saw it all. We've been friends forever; don't I know you?"
Donovan sneered. To outsiders, he was always protecting Riley. But who knew she avoided him like the plague, even running off abroad to get away from him!
Dalton noticed Donovan's mood shift and felt even more uneasy.
Donovan hadn't shown any concern despite everything said. Instead, he stayed cold, like someone owed him big time.
But if he didn't care about Riley, Dalton had never seen him so worked up over any woman. Not only did he not shut it down, but he also kept the conversation going.
Dalton thought, 'So, should I bring up that thing or not?'
