Chapter 128 Only Fond of That One

Lillian responded blankly, saying, "I understand."

"You should dress up more often. What are you even wearing?" Samantha said disdainfully, "Not a single brand name on you. Is Alexander not giving you any money? You look so shabby."

"No, Mom, I just..." Lillian hesitated, unsure how to explain herself.

"Have you read the books I recommended to you?" Samantha asked again.

"I've read a bit, but I'm usually too busy with work and sometimes don't have time," Lillian said weakly. The books Samantha recommended were all about how to get along with one's husband.

Just looking at the titles made Lillian break out in a sweat. Where did Samantha even find these books? She had even searched for them on shopping apps but couldn't find any.

"You must read them. Highly respected teachers write these and are very useful for you," Samantha said discontentedly.

"I understand," Lillian replied.

When Lillian got into the car, Shae teased, "Ms. Hill, it seems you have a good relationship with Samantha. She keeps talking to you non-stop before you leave."

"Yes, Samantha is very nice," she responded with a faint smile.

Shae said, "Usually, it's hard for someone from an ordinary family like you to be liked by the mother-in-law after marrying into a wealthy family. It's usually all kinds of difficulties, but you are really an exception."

Lillian wondered if she was being overly sensitive, but she felt that Shae's words were rather sarcastic. She glanced at Alexander, who was looking out the car window. He frowned in thought, completely oblivious to her conversation with Shae.

"Kevin, drop me off at Star Plaza first. I have an appointment with Evelyn," Shae said.

Alexander withdrew his gaze and asked, "Do you have an appointment with Evelyn? Come back early tonight."

"Okay, Alexander!" Shae turned back, playfully drawing out her words as she replied to him.

Ten minutes later, Shae got out of the car. She held the car door and smiled at Alexander, who was sitting in the back, saying, "Alexander, see you in a couple of days." Then she closed the door and left.

Lillian looked at Alexander in confusion and asked, "Do you two have a date in two days?"

Alexander's tone carried a hint of irritation, "No, I don't know what she's up to again."

Seeing that he was in a bad mood, Lillian quietly sat beside him, not disturbing him.

Shae had arranged to meet Evelyn at a café in the plaza. When she arrived, Evelyn was already there.

"Excuse me, miss, is this seat taken?" Shae asked, pretending to be formal as she stood by the seat.

Evelyn was playing on her phone. Hearing this, she looked up and exclaimed, lightly hitting her. "You don't tell me you are coming. Why are you teasing me?"

"Tell me, who are you chatting with so happily? Is he Caspian?" Shae asked with a laugh.

Evelyn locked her phone and placed it on the table, saying, "Who would chat with him? It's about the studio." She then asked unhappily, "Why are you so late?"

"I went to Sinclair Villa with Alexander after work," Shae said, sipping the coffee Evelyn had ordered for her.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Do you go to Sinclair Villa? You never used to go there. Why do you go this time?"

"Since Alexander got married, I wanted to meet his wife," Shae said evasively, then added with a bit of disdain, "Why does Alexander marry his secretary?"

"Alexander and Lillian hit it off. It's fate. Lillian is quite nice," Evelyn said.

Shae sneered, curling her lips without saying a word.

Seeing her disgruntled expression, Evelyn said to her, "I know you also like Alexander. When Amy was alive, you had to step back. Now, since Lillian's conditions are indeed not as good as yours, you feel indignant, but what can you do? To put it bluntly, if Alexander really liked you, you would have had many opportunities after Amy passed away. But he sees you as a sister, so stop overthinking it."

"I know Alexander sees me as a sister. You say I look a lot like Amy, so why doesn't he like me?" Shae asked, puzzled.

Evelyn thought for a moment and said, "It's like twins. They look the same, but when it comes to choosing a partner, they only like that one person. There's only one Amy. Alexander likes that one."

Shae didn't speak, her eyes narrowed slightly. Her face showed such hatred that it was frightening.

"Shae, what's wrong?" Evelyn touched her hand. "Do you know you look really scary right now?"

Shae snapped out of her memories, adjusted her facial expression, and exhaled, saying, "Sorry, I scared you. Besides feeling indignant, there's nothing I can do. Alexander loves Amy, but I am Shae. It's just my unfortunate fate."

Evelyn sighed. "You're talking so negatively. You're beautiful and wealthy. Your fate is quite good."

Without saying, Shae gave a bitter smile.

"I hear you're not going back this time. Does your family agree with you staying? What are your plans?" Evelyn asked.

Shae replied discontentedly, "Of course, they don't agree. They all wish I wouldn't come back. My two brothers are just afraid I'll work at the company. I don't care for that empty shell of a company."

Evelyn said puzzledly, "I remember your two brothers used to dote on you and treat you very well. How do things change?"

In fact, she wanted to say that Shae had changed a lot, too, becoming a completely different person, but she didn't say it out loud.

"They're probably worried I'll fight for the inheritance," Shae said, her eyes dull,  smiling weakly.

"Let's not talk about these unhappy things. Tell me your plans," Evelyn said.

"Find a job, nothing else," Shae replied.

"That's good. Don't let yourself be idle," Evelyn advised.

Lillian and Alexander returned home and saw a suitcase standing at the door.

"Whose is this?" Lillian asked curiously.

Luke heard the noise and ran over, saying, "It's Oscar's. He says he's going back to school tomorrow."

"Really? Is Oscar going back to school?" Lillian felt a bit guilty, thinking she hadn't been paying enough attention to Oscar. She went upstairs to Oscar's room. Oscar was packing some things. Seeing Lillian come in, he smiled and said, "Lillian, you're back?"

"Oscar, I'm sorry. I've been so busy lately that I don't even know you are going back to school tomorrow." Lillian sat on the bed and looked at the things in the suitcase.

Oscar said, "Lillian, don't blame yourself. I don't tell you either. I've gotten so used to living here that I almost forgot I have to go back to school."

"You should come back during the holidays," Lillian said, watching him pack, "You've been here for almost two months, accumulating quite a lot of stuff.""Yes, Alexander gives me several books. Luke gives me all sorts of strange little things. I've kept them all." He said, taking a white envelope from the table and handing it to Lillian. "Lillian, this is the salary Alexander gives me. He said it would be 600 dollars, but he gave me 1000 dollars. You should take this money."
