Chapter 420 Involved in a Car Accident
Atlanter, a bustling metropolis, was a place Wendy had only visited once before, and that was Aurora's house.
After getting off the plane, they boarded the hotel shuttle bus and smoothly arrived. She had booked a family suite, with her parents in the inner room and herself in the outer room.
After changing clothes, Jessica and Patrick mentioned that there was a mall nearby and they wanted to go shopping to buy some gifts for Aurora. Wendy was planning the next day's itinerary on her phone, and nodded in agreement.
She posted a picture of her plane ticket and the garden view outside the hotel on her New Feed, with the caption: "I feel like a bird set free!"
Soon, in the friends' group chat, Lillian and Angela both asked, [Why did you go to Atlanter? Who are you with?]
[My mom and dad,] Wendy replied, adding a laughing emoji and explaining the situation to them.
[Angela, do you need me to check on Ivan for you secretly? To see if he's cheating on you with a prostitute!] Wendy sent a voice message, laughing mischievously.
Angela quickly replied, her tone dismissive, [Go ahead, I completely trust Ivan.]
[Quite confident, aren't you?] Wendy then asked Lillian, [Lillian, is there anything you need for your wedding that I can buy here and bring back for you?]
[Thanks, darling. Alexander is handling all the wedding stuff; I don't have to take care of it. You just have fun in Atlanter.]
Later, Angela told her in the group chat about fun places to visit and good food to try in Atlanter, and Wendy noted everything down in her little notebook.
After finishing up, she lay back on the bed to rest and was about to fall asleep when her phone buzzed, startling her awake.
"Hello?" She saw that the call was from Caspian.
Caspian's gentle voice came through, "Wendy, are you out having fun?"
"Yeah, I'm in Atlanter with my parents for a wedding," Wendy said, still surprised that he had called. She then asked, "Is there something you need?"
"Not really," Caspian said. "I just wanted to let you know that if you need anything in Atlanter, give me a call. I have friends there. Stay safe while you're out."
"Okay, I know. I'm not a kid," Wendy said.
There was a moment of silence.
Wendy broke the silence first, asking, "Did you call just to tell me this?"
"Yeah, nothing else," Caspian said.
"Alright, I'm hanging up then. Bye."
"Bye."
After Caspian hung up, he sat there in a daze. He didn't know what was happening to him lately; he always wanted to check on her and know what she was doing. Ever since she was deceived by Aaron, he had been worried every day, afraid she would get hurt again, afraid her kindness would lead her to the wrong people. He didn't know if this was love, but he knew it was a tough feeling, thinking about her every day.
After the call, Wendy couldn't fall back asleep. She sat on the bed, lost in thought. What did Caspian mean by this? She had a feeling that his concern was different from what she'd seen with friends before; it felt a bit ambiguous or even flirty.
"No way!" Wendy shook her head vigorously, denying it. "I must be out of my mind to think that. He doesn't like me, remember that!" She muttered to herself, pulling the blanket over her head.
That evening, she took her parents to the largest market in Atlanter. The two of them didn't eat much, but she stuffed herself until she felt like she was going to burst. After the market, they took a ferry ride. The breeze was very pleasant.
In the following days, Wendy accompanied her parents to various tourist spots. Jessica didn't like joining tour groups, so Wendy had to get up early every day to take them around from morning till night. By the end of each day, she was exhausted, feeling like her body was falling apart.
Although Jessica and Patrick were also tired, it wasn't as obvious as with Wendy. After a night's sleep, they were full of energy the next day. Jessica teased Wendy for being weak and told her to exercise more when they got home.
Wendy pouted and whispered, "Of course, you guys don't have to worry about anything. I'm the one planning the routes, finding restaurants, and figuring out which subway line to take. It's no wonder I'm tired!"
Every night when they returned to the hotel, Jessica and Patrick would start uploading photos, posting on New Feed, and sharing videos. Wendy would fall asleep every night while chatting with her mom and friends in the group chat.
On the last day, Wendy couldn't take it anymore. She didn't get up in the morning and told Jessica, "Mom, I really can't walk anymore today. Let's just join a one-day tour group."
"Where are we going today?" Jessica, seeing her daughter's exhausted and sleep-deprived state, felt a bit of sympathy.
Wendy flipped through her notebook and said, "We still haven't climbed Eternal Peak or visited Clearwater Old Town. These two places are in opposite directions, so let's join a tour group that covers both spots. It'll be more convenient."
"Alright, let's find a group then. Preferably a small one with a good guide," Jessica advised.
"Okay, I got it," Wendy said, opening her phone.
Eternal Peak was the most famous mountain in Atlanter, with a renowned church at the top that attracted many visitors.
Following the guide's little red flag, they climbed up the mountain. Jessica said to Wendy, "When I reach the top, I'm going to pray for a good match."
Wendy smiled and said, "Mom, I already prayed at the church before. The priest said I'll have good luck with romantic interests this year."
"Good luck with romantic interests doesn't mean you'll get married."
Patrick, following behind, said, "Let nature take its course."
"Dad's right, let nature take its course."
Jessica looked at them, chuckled, and said no more.
When they reached the top, they were exhausted. Sitting on a big rock to rest, Jessica shaded her eyes with her hand and looked at the church in the distance, still unwilling to give up. "Are you not going?"
"Too tired, not going. Mom, let's save some energy for other places."
"Go ask the guide how long we can rest before heading down."
After staying on the mountain for over half an hour, the guide led the group down. They boarded the bus and headed to the next destination.
Coming down the mountain, everyone on the bus was exhausted. The bus swayed gently, and soon everyone was asleep.
Wendy also dozed off, but suddenly she felt a violent jolt, hitting her head on something hard, waking her up in pain.
Opening her eyes, she saw the bus spinning out of control, finally tipping over, throwing everyone to one side. The bus was filled with cries, shouts, and screams. Wendy screamed for her parents in fear.
Some kind people called for emergency services and helped manage the accident on the scene. Wendy desperately pulled her parents out of the bus to a safe place. Their heads were bleeding, and they were unconscious. Wendy, terrified, hugged them and cried loudly.
