Chapter 136 The Picnic
Kevin drove them home.
Lillian was feeling out of sorts but couldn't vent it. She was merely Alexander's contractual wife, which made her even more upset.
She took out the medicine from Linda and handed it to Alexander, saying, "This is from Grandma. She said it increases the chances of pregnancy and is very effective. It's not suitable for me to keep it. You should take it."
Upon hearing this, Alexander, who had been dozing off, glanced at the medicine. "Grandma gave it to you. Keep it if you don't take it."
"I don't think it's appropriate," Lillian said, lowering her head and gently rubbing the medicine. "We're just contractual spouses. Keeping this medicine with me is a waste. It should have a rightful owner."
Alexander responded mockingly, "Don't overthink it. Since Grandma gave you the medicine, you are its rightful owner. Don't disappoint her."
"Promising something that can't be achieved is disappointing, Grandma. I feel guilty," she whispered.
Alexander said to her, "Do what you should do, chat with Grandma, make her happy, and you won't disappoint her. Don't dwell on impossible things."
Seeing how naturally he spoke, Lillian replied, "I am overthinking. I understand now."
Alexander closed his eyes again and sneered. "Lillian, I've noticed that every time I'm with Shae, you get upset and throw a fit."
"I'm not throwing a fit. Whatever you two do has nothing to do with me!" Lillian retorted, her pride evident despite her true feelings.
Alexander silently chuckled in the darkness and continued to rest.
March, symbolizing spring, arrived soon. As the temperature warmed, spring was ideal for sleeping, but Lillian had trouble waking up daily.
On a weekend morning, Lillian and Kelly began preparing lunchboxes and fruit ready in the kitchen. The weather was bright and sunny, and they planned to take Luke for a picnic.
Lillian sat at the dining table, making a vegetable salad. Kelly was busy baking cookies, and the two chatted as they worked.
"Lillian, why don't you ask Alexander if he has time to join us for the picnic today?" Kelly said, turning around.
Lillian, chopping vegetables, replied sarcastically, "He's so busy that he can't go on a picnic with us."
Kelly placed the freshly baked cookies into the lunchbox and chuckled. "What happened between you two?"
Lillian got irritated when she thought of Alexander leaving with Shae after work the past few days. She grumbled, "Same as always."
"I heard Shae started as an intern secretary at the Sinclair Group," Kelly said. "Did she do something to upset you?"
"She and Alexander are so close. She wouldn't do anything inappropriate," Lillian said, feeling a lump in her throat and almost tearing up.
Kelly took some fruit out of the fridge and said, "Back then, when Alexander was dating Amy, Shae was always tagging along. Everyone could see she likes Alexander, but he only saw her as a sister. Alexander and Shae have nothing between them. If Alexander liked her, they would have been together long ago."
"Kelly, I know. But I have no right to interfere with him. Whoever he cares about or likes has nothing to do with me," Lillian said, her thoughts wandering again.
Kelly was puzzled and said earnestly, "Lillian, I don't know how you and Alexander got together, but over time, I've seen your relationship with him improve bit by bit. Don't let Shae ruin what you have with Alexander."
Lillian looked at Kelly and gave a shy smile. "Kelly, I've troubled you again. I don't know why I've suddenly become so sensitive and fragile."
"You and Alexander are like my children. I enjoy worrying about you," Kelly said with a smile.
Lillian finished making the vegetable salad, covered her mouth as she yawned, and said, "Spring is here, and I get sleepy easily."
Hearing this, Kelly turned to look at her in confusion, saying seriously, "Lillian, look at me."
Lillian obediently looked at Kelly. "What's wrong?"
Kelly scrutinized her, took a breath, and asked, "You haven't looked well these past few days. You seem a bit off. Are you pregnant?"
"Of course not!" Lillian waved her hand in astonishment/ "It's impossible. Alexander and I have been using contraception!"
"Then I must have been mistaken," Kelly said with a self-deprecating smile. "I'm getting old, and my mind isn't as sharp."
Lillian teased. "Kelly, I won't allow you to say that about yourself."
She put the prepared vegetable salad into a lunchbox, thinking to herself, 'Alexander and I only had sex once in Aetherland, and I had taken a contraceptive pill afterward.'
She was sure she couldn't be pregnant. She took Kelly's words as a joke.
Around ten in the morning, Melvin, Kelly, Lillian, and Luke drove straight to the countryside. The weekend traffic was very congested, and by the time they reached the countryside, it was almost noon.
Oscar arrived straight from school. Everyone enjoyed the excellent weather today by picnicking and playing in the countryside. He picked a space on the picnic grounds when he arrived, saving Lillian and the others from searching.
"Lillian! Over here!" Oscar saw them and quickly got up from the grass, waving to them.
Luke ran over and jumped into his arms. "Oscar, did you miss me?"
Oscar tweaked his nose. "We haven't been apart for long, but yes, I missed you too!"
Kelly, carrying a basket, praised. "Oscar is so smart, knowing to secure a spot first when he arrived."
Oscar grinned cutely and asked, "Why don't Alexander come with you?"
Lillian spread out the picnic mat on the ground and said, "He's very busy. We didn't tell him we were coming for a picnic today."
Oscar was disappointed.
Kelly quickly said, "We'll see Alexander when we go home for dinner tonight."
The weather was clear, making it a delightful afternoon.
Lillian played cards with Melvin and Kelly while Oscar played with Luke on the grass. They returned with buckets, kites, and enormous pinwheels, running around the three of them, looking pleased.
"There's still a spot over here. Let's picnic here," a girl's clear voice sounded not far away.
Lillian saw a girl with a man. He happened to look over as well, and their eyes met unintentionally.
"Michael?"Lillian exclaimed in surprise.
