Chapter 246 Nico's Miscarriage
At dinner, the elders sat at one table and the younger ones at another.
Lillian's table was filled with cousins, Nico on her left and Leah on her right. Sandwiched in the middle, she listened to them discuss high-fashion brands and celebrity relationships, feeling completely out of place.
After finally finishing the meal, Nico took her to the small lounge to have tea and chat with the cousins. Not wanting to seem too aloof, Lillian didn't refuse.
"Nico, I heard Blake brought a parrot that's really beautiful and can say a lot of words. Can you bring it out for us to play with?" Laura Sinclair said to Nico.
Nico replied, "Blake is planning to show the parrot at Grandpa's birthday tomorrow. You'll see it then."
"Tomorrow? But I really want to see it now," Laura said, looking a bit disappointed.
"Why don't you ask Blake and see if he agrees?" Nico advised.
At eighteen, Laura was at an age where she loved having fun. Hearing Nico's suggestion, she saw an opportunity and immediately ran to the dining room.
Soon, Laura came running back, excitedly telling Nico, "Nico, Blake agreed. He's bringing the parrot over."
Lillian also wanted to see the parrot and make it talk. She had only seen parrots at the zoo before, and those never spoke.
Blake came over with the parrot. It stood straight on its perch, head held high, looking around.
"Blake, does it have a name?" Laura asked, teasing the parrot with her hand.
"Serendipity," Blake replied.
He then handed the parrot to Laura and went back to the dining room.
"Serendipity," Laura teased it. "Hello."
"Hello," the parrot mimicked.
Lillian laughed in surprise. "That's really interesting."
"Lillian, come and tease it too," Laura said to Lillian.
The others all came forward to talk to the parrot, but Lillian stayed seated, watching with interest.
"Lillian, come on. Let's tease it too. Just watching is no fun," Nico said, pulling her up to stand in front of the parrot.
Nico said, "Happy birthday."
The parrot mimicked, "Happy birthday."
Nico continued, "Double the luck."
The parrot mimicked, "Double the luck."
Nico said a phrase, and the parrot mimicked it. It was clear the owner had trained it well.
Lillian asked, "What else can you say?"
"I love you," the parrot said.
Everyone laughed, finding it extremely amusing.
Laura fed it some sunflower seeds and turned to Lillian and Nico, saying, "I saw online that parrots can crack sunflower seeds really fast, spitting out the shells instantly. I should ask my dad to get me one, too; it's so much fun!"
Suddenly, she screamed in pain, her face turning pale as she shouted to Lillian and Nico, "The parrot bit my finger!" As she spoke, the parrot flapped its wings, trying to fly away, still holding Laura's finger in its beak.
"It hurts!" Laura screamed, bursting into tears.
Seeing this, everyone rushed over, attempting to pry the parrot's beak open but hesitating to use force. Seven or eight people gathered around, shouting incessantly. Trapped in the middle, Lillian felt a headache coming on and wanted to leave.
Before she could turn around, someone suddenly pushed her hard from behind. She lost control and fell forward, knocking Nico to the ground. Fortunately, Leah caught her, preventing her from falling.
"Nico!" Several people screamed in fright, and someone quickly ran to the dining room to call for help.
Soon, Alexander and Blake rushed over, followed by Beatrice and Samantha.
"Lily! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Alexander asked, sweating with worry.
Lillian shook her head, still in shock, and said, "I'm fine, thanks to Leah catching me. Otherwise, I would have fallen, too."
Alexander sighed in relief, hugging her for comfort.
"Honey!" Blake shouted in fear. "Honey, you're bleeding!"
Nico lay on the ground, Blake's hand stained with blood.
"Go to the hospital quickly!" Alexander immediately called Melvin to prepare the car.
Lillian, scared and on the verge of tears, asked, "Honey, I pushed Nico just now. Will her baby be okay?"
Alexander was stunned and asked, "Did you push her?"
"Yes, someone pushed me from behind, and she was right in front of me. I couldn't control myself and pushed her," Lillian said anxiously. "I really didn't mean to. I don't want anything to happen to her baby."
Alexander comforted her, saying, "Honey, don't worry. Just tell me slowly what happened."
He took Lillian to a quiet place, where the parrot was still holding Laura's finger.
In the car, Nico's legs trembled slightly as she said to Blake in panic, "Blake, we must save the baby!"
Blake frowned tightly, glancing at the driver in front, and said through gritted teeth, "I arranged for someone to push Lillian. How did you end up on the ground?"
"She pushed me!" Nico cried. "I was standing in front of her, and she pushed me!"
Blake closed his eyes deeply, wondering, 'How my plan backfired so badly.'
"Stop crying. You're seven months pregnant; you should be fine. If anything happens, I won't let them get away with it!" Blake said through gritted teeth.
Back at Sinclair Villa, Laura's finger was finally freed, and she was taken to the hospital by her father, crying.
Linda, unhappy, said, "Why did this parrot bite someone? Throw it out!"
Beatrice, worried about Nico, quickly said, "Mom, this parrot is Blake's birthday gift for Dad. It can say a lot of nice things. Let's keep it."
"It's a menace!" Linda said angrily. "It's just a bird that can say a few words, yet you treasure it so much. You should spend more time caring about Nico!"
Beatrice felt confused, angry, and worried. She found the situation strange. She had seen the parrot before, and it had always been well-behaved. Why did it suddenly bite someone?
"Mom, don't be angry. Nico will be fine," Samantha comforted. "At least Lillian is okay."
Linda said to Melvin, "Investigate this! Check the surveillance and find out what really happened!"
At the hospital, Blake paced anxiously outside the operating room, feeling both irritable and uneasy.
After what felt like an eternity, the door to the operating room opened, and the doctor came out, speaking with regret, "I'm sorry. We couldn't save the baby."
"What did you say?" Blake, furious, grabbed the doctor's collar and shouted. "Couldn't you save the baby? Say it again!"
