Chapter 214 Alexander Goes to Pay Respects to Amy
Caspian was driving Wendy home, and her phone wouldn't stop buzzing with Facebook notifications. She glanced at it, then locked the screen, ignoring the noise.
"Is your family worried?" Caspian asked.
Wendy shrugged. "Nah, just a bunch of useless messages."
Her phone rang again. She answered it, clearly annoyed.
"What now? Why do you keep sending me these pointless messages?" she snapped.
A guy's voice on the other end pleaded, "Wendy, I said on Facebook I'd pick you up for work tomorrow. You didn't reply, so I asked a few more times."
Wendy rolled her eyes. "Thanks, but I don't need a ride. I can get to work on my own."
"I'll be driving anyway, so we can go to the studio together," Roy Carter insisted.
Wendy shot a look at Caspian and then said firmly to Roy, "Mr. Carter, thanks, but I don't need it. Please don't come to pick me up tomorrow. Goodbye." She hung up quickly.
"A colleague?" Caspian asked. "Is he trying to hit on you?"
Wendy frowned, looking troubled and staying silent.
Roy was from the research department, and they barely interacted. But in the few times they did, he seemed to develop feelings for her. Since then, he wouldn't stop contacting her, which was super annoying.
Wendy usually had a good temper, but his constant calls were driving her nuts. She had yelled at him a few times, hoping he'd back off, but he just got more persistent.
Earlier at Lillian's house, she put her phone on silent to avoid the disturbance. When she checked it later, there were over a dozen Facebook messages and calls. It was borderline harassment.
"He's really annoying. I've made it clear I don't like him, but he keeps contacting me. It's driving me crazy," Wendy vented to Caspian.
Lillian was pregnant, so Wendy didn't want to bother her. She also didn't want to tell Angela, who would probably suggest teaching Roy a lesson, which was too extreme.
Caspian remarked, "Some guys just don't get it. They think it's a crime for a woman not to be with them."
Wendy thought this sounded a lot like how Caspian had pursued Evelyn. She couldn't help but look at him.
Caspian felt that something was off after saying those words. He thought about it for a moment and suddenly realized, wasn't he describing himself?
"Shit!" he cursed.
Wendy laughed. "Did you just realize today how you used to be?"
Caspian shot her a cold look. "No way!"
He said, "Don't project everything onto me. It wasn't just about self-righteousness between Ms. Phillips and me. As for your situation, don't be polite with him. If he keeps bugging you, tell him off. Don't give him any hope. Got it?"
"Yeah, I've always been very firm," she affirmed.
Caspian smirked and teased, "Doesn't he know we were rumored to be in the studio? How dare he covet my girlfriend?"
"Who's your girlfriend!" Wendy's face blushed.
"Why are you so naive and shy?" Caspian asked, puzzled. "To your colleagues, our relationship seems pretty special."
Wendy sighed, "Who knows if Mr. Carter even cares. Even if he does, he'll still do whatever he wants. He's a bit odd. Sometimes he's so upright he doesn't respect anyone, not even Ms. Phillips."
Caspian scoffed. "Sounds like he's not very smooth. You should teach him a lesson!"
"You do it. I can't handle him," Wendy teased back.
They chatted on the way home, and soon they arrived.
Caspian leaned forward, craning his neck to look at the apartment building. "This place is pretty old."
"They're all old buildings around here," Wendy said. "Drive safe on your way back. Thanks for the ride tonight. Bye."
"Bye-bye," Caspian said in a drawn-out tone, watching her get out of the car.
Wendy found it amusing and turned back to look at him, smiling as she walked away.
On his way back, Caspian kept thinking about self-righteousness and suddenly realized how over the top he had been in pursuing Evelyn.
He scoffed to himself, "But so what? Without that self-righteousness, I'd probably be worse off!"
Today was the day Alexander went to pay respects to Lillian's father and Amy. It was raining outside.
During breakfast, Lillian reminded Alexander, "The road is slippery when it rains. Be careful at the cemetery and don't twist your ankle."
Alexander replied, "Okay, I got it."
Alexander wondered if something was wrong with him. Lillian was very understanding and didn't cause him any trouble, but he still felt uncomfortable.
He thought, 'Even the most understanding wife would feel a bit jealous when her husband went to see his ex-girlfriend. Shouldn't she say something like "come back early"? But she seemed so indifferent. Although she looked fine, what was she really thinking?'
"What are you thinking?" Lillian waved her hand in front of his eyes, smiling.
Alexander snapped out of it, glanced at Luke eating, and decided to keep his doubts to himself for now.
After dropping Luke off at school, Alexander drove to the funeral home. He found the ashes of Lillian's father, Lester Hill, and respectfully placed a bouquet of flowers.
Looking at the face that resembled Lillian's, he softly said, "Dad, rest assured. I will take good care of Lily and our child."
Leaving the funeral home, he drove to the cemetery.
He bought Amy's favorite sunflowers and her favorite sweets and brought them along.
Standing in front of a tombstone, holding a bouquet and a box of sweets, Alexander looked solemnly at Amy's smiling face on the tombstone.
"Amy, I'm here to see you," he said with a smile that warmed the surroundings.
He squatted down, placing the flowers and sweets in front of the tombstone. He took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the tombstone, whispering, "The last time I came to see you was on your birthday. It's been over six months since then. I haven't visited you. Are you mad at me?"
