Chapter 409 The Cat's Out of the Bag
Lillian hurriedly comforted her, saying, "Evelyn, don't worry. Alexander is right here with me. I'll let him listen."
Alexander took the phone and said, "Evelyn, speak slowly."
"Alexander, something's happened! The project Amos was in charge of has gone wrong, and I can't find him anywhere!"
Alexander said, "Don't panic. I'm taking wedding photos with Lily and can't leave right now. I'll ask Kevin and the others to help you find him. Caspian is already on his way to the site."
"Caspian? How did he know?" Evelyn asked, puzzled.
Alexander said, "Don't worry. Just go to the site. Caspian is there and will help you."
"Okay." Evelyn quickly agreed and hung up the phone.
Lillian asked anxiously, "Honey, what happened? What's wrong with Amos?"
Alexander angrily said, "That bastard! Caspian just called me and said Amos embezzled project funds and ran off with the money. He asked me to send someone to chase him."
"What? He ran off?" Lillian was shocked, covering her mouth. "Isn't that the project Evelyn's dad won the bid for? He just took the money and ran? What is Evelyn supposed to do now?"
"It looks like he had been planning this for a long time, just waiting for this day." Alexander finished and, seeing Lillian's worried expression, said, "When the call came in, I guessed it was from Evelyn and didn't want to tell you to affect your mood. Don't worry, Caspian is there. He'll help Evelyn handle it."
"Thank goodness Caspian is there." Lillian bit her lip and thought for a moment, then said, "Honey, maybe you should go take a look too."
"Even if I go, I can't solve anything. It would be a wasted trip. Caspian can handle it."
Alexander patted her shoulder and comforted her, saying, "Don't worry, everything will be fine. We still have two outfits left to shoot. Don't let this affect us."
Lillian exhaled deeply and said, "Yeah, you specially invited the photography team from Atlanta. Let's finish the photos first. I'll call Evelyn later."
At the construction site, the project was almost complete, with three tall buildings standing. However, one of the buildings had large cracks on the exterior walls, showing signs of shoddy construction.
A worker had been hit by falling debris, and the management had called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. Worse, someone had notified the media, so all the local media had gathered to report on the situation. Even some independent media were there, live-streaming the event.
When Caspian arrived at the scene, he methodically arranged things, chased away the live streamers, and used his connections to ask the media not to publish the news yet.
"Mr. Wade, we're live streaming. It's already out there," a reporter said with a troubled expression.
Caspian, holding back his anger, asked, "Why are you live-streaming? How did you find out?"
"Our company's core management instructed us to do a live broadcast," the reporter said.
Caspian was very angry but had no solution.
Evelyn hurried over and, seeing the chaos, pulled Caspian aside and asked, "What's going on right now?"
"The worker has been sent to the hospital," Caspian said after a brief pause. "But there's bad news. The media just did a live broadcast of the scene. Now, I'm afraid everyone online will know."
"What?" Evelyn's mouth dropped open in shock. "How could this happen? Who notified the media?"
She anxiously said, "What should we do? I don't know where Amos is, and I can't reach him. I'm so worried!"
Caspian looked at Evelyn with frustration and suddenly got very angry. He said in a muffled voice, "If you can't find him, it means he ran off!"
"How is that possible?" Evelyn blurted out, denying his words.
Caspian, furious, grabbed her wrist and pointed at the building, saying angrily, "Evelyn, don't let love make you stupid! Look at this project Amos did. Cutting corners, what does that tell you? Did he spend the money on the project? And you still say it's impossible? Wake up!"
Evelyn's eyes turned red as she looked at the facts in front of her. Even if she didn't want to admit it, she couldn't deceive herself anymore.
Caspian exhaled and said to Evelyn, "The construction site issue can be dealt with. My main concern now is the company. This project was won by your dad, and it's a government project with significant influence. Now that the media has reported it, there's no way to cover it up. You need to go to the company and help your dad figure out how to handle this. I'll go to the hospital to check on the injured worker."
Evelyn instinctively nodded in agreement, "Okay, I'll go to the company now."
"Don't panic, drive carefully. There's always a solution. As for Amos, I've asked Alexander to send someone to look for him." Caspian finished speaking and was about to get in the car.
Evelyn suddenly called out to him, looking at him with gratitude, "Caspian, thank you."
Caspian had a complicated look in his eyes. He didn't say anything got in the car and left.
The Phillips Group.
After the media broadcast the news, the company's stock plummeted, and the senior board members gathered in the conference room.
"What kind of company did we give this project to? I've never heard of them!"
"What do we do now? Is our company's good reputation going to be ruined just like that?"
"Joseph, I heard the company that took this project is your daughter's boyfriend's?"
Joseph, under the accusations of the others, repeatedly admitted that he had been careless.
Evelyn, feeling sorry for Joseph, said to the board members, "Gentlemen, I bear a lot of responsibility for what happened today. But I promise I will give you a satisfactory answer."
"What answer can you give us? How will you recover the company's reputation, credibility, and financial losses? You're just a young girl, speaking lightly."
"Evelyn, is that Amos your boyfriend? Could he be a con artist you brought in to scam us?"
Evelyn, furious, said, "Micah Grayson, how can you say that? My dad has given his all to this company, and I would never do such a thing!"
Micah sneered and pushed his phone across the table to her, saying, "Take a look. This is what my people just sent me. Is your boyfriend running a shell company?"
The information showed that Amos's company had been deregistered.
"I didn't know that either." Evelyn was both angry and anxious, unable to defend herself.
"Micah, and everyone here, I understand you're all very upset about this situation. If you have any complaints, direct them to me. This has nothing to do with Evelyn," Joseph said calmly.
He slowly stood up, looked at everyone, and said slowly, "I will give you all an explanation for this matter. I will also recover all the losses!"
With that, he turned and left the room.
But just after taking a few steps, he collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
"Dad!"
