Chapter 163 Visiting Debra
Adam's head slowly turned, terror etched on his face. "How do you know about this?" he stammered.
Alexander chuckled nonchalantly. "Everyone in Rihegde knows. It's no big deal."
Sweat beaded on Adam's forehead. "Yeah, I know about it too," he admitted, guilt creeping into his voice.
Alexander stood up, walked over, and stopped in front of Adam, hands in his pockets. "Adam, I'm curious. How did that driver get away? Margaret is quite powerful in Rihegde. How'd she not catch a driver?"
Adam's face went pale, his lips trembling. "How would I know?"
Alexander laughed, giving Adam a hearty pat on the shoulder, nearly knocking him over. "It's fine if you don't know. I do. Margaret invited me to play golf a few days ago. If you're free, come with me."
Adam thought back to that rainy night two years ago and shook his head, panic rising. "I can't. I don't know how to play your rich people games. I'd just embarrass you."
He forced a smile. "I need a job. Got anything for me?"
Alexander smirked. "You want to work again? What about quitting gambling? Didn't you say you couldn't? I can't hire a gambler."
Adam stayed silent, weighing his options. Between gambling and staying alive, the choice was clear. Margaret's influence in Rihegde was strong. If she caught him, he was done for.
"Gambling's bad. I'll quit, I promise," Adam said, trying to sound relaxed. He put an arm around Alexander's shoulder. "We're family. You wouldn't harm me, right?"
"I wouldn't harm you, but if you try anything, I'll take you to see Margaret," Alexander said with a sinister smile, pushing Adam's arm away.
Adam took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay, I'll do whatever you say."
Alexander sat back at his desk, handed Adam a business card, and said, "You can start in the warehouse. Room and board are provided. The monthly salary is $900 a month, with two days off each month"
"$900? That's so little!" Adam complained.
"If you think it's too little, you can refuse and quit now," Alexander replied.
"Fine, I'll do it," Adam said through gritted teeth. After all, Alexander had something on him that Alexander could use against him.
As Adam left the office, he glanced into the secretary's office. Lola came out of the printing room and saw him.
"Adam," she called, "Did you finish talking with Alexander?"
Adam responded coolly, "I'm going to work in the warehouse."
"Warehouse? Didn't Lisa say you'd be working in the company?" Lola asked, surprised.
"You believe what Lisa says?" Adam shot back, giving her a sidelong glance. "What about you? Are you Alexander's personal secretary now?"
"No, I'm just an intern in the main office," Lola said, disappointed.
Adam sneered as the elevator door opened. "Don't be upset. Just do your job. I'm leaving."
"Okay, bye," Lola said, watching the elevator door close. She sighed. Lisa always talked big, but nothing she said ever came true.
At noon, Alexander gave Kaitlyn a few instructions and then left. As he entered the elevator, Shae hurried in. "Alexander, are you leaving?" she asked.
The elevator descended slowly.
"What's up?" Alexander asked.
Shae hesitated. "It's nothing major. Next week is Paula's birthday, and I wanted to ask if you'd come."
Paula Bell was Amy's mom.
"Isn't Paula's family out of town?" Alexander asked.
"She wasn't feeling well before Christmas and came to Rihegde for treatment. She hasn't left since. She said she'd go back after her birthday," Shae explained.
The elevator dinged, reaching the first floor.
Alexander walked out. "I won't go. I'll send a gift instead."
"Alexander, Amy is gone. Are you just going to cut ties with her family?" Shae asked, her voice tinged with sadness.
"I'm married now. It's not appropriate for me to go. I don't want to ruin Paula's birthday," Alexander said, heading out of the building.
After Amy's car accident, Paula despised Alexander but couldn't voice it because of the Sinclair family's influence. After Amy's death, Alexander took care of her family, especially in business, which softened their hatred. He visited them every holiday and birthday.
"How would it ruin her birthday?" Shae pressed. "Paula specifically asked me to tell you she wants you there."
Standing by his car, Alexander said, "We'll see. you should go have lunch."
"Alexander, where are you going? Do you have an appointment?" Shae asked.
"I'm taking Lily to the hospital," Alexander replied, opening the car door.
Shae frowned and headed back inside as the car drove away.
Lillian and Linda were having lunch when they heard Kelly's voice from the living room, "Mr. Sinclair is back."
"Why is he back for lunch again?" Linda asked, puzzled, putting down her fork.
Lillian didn't dare tell Linda they were going to the hospital to see a patient. She quietly ate her meal, waiting for Alexander to come in.
"Grandma," Alexander said, sitting next to Lillian, "How are you feeling today?"
Lillian looked up, nodded while eating.
"Why are you back for lunch again? I'm here with Lily. What are you worried about?" Linda said, annoyed.
"Mr. Sinclair, have you had lunch?" Kelly asked as she entered.
"No, I'll eat with you," Alexander said. He then turned to Linda. "Grandma, don't say that. I'm not worried. The weather's nice today. I'll take Lily out for a walk."
Lillian secretly sighed in relief and gave Alexander an appreciative look.
After lunch, Kelly accompanied Linda upstairs. Lillian and Alexander returned to their room.
"Pack up, and we'll leave directly," Alexander said, sitting on the sofa.
Lillian searched for clothes in the closet and smiled. "I was really scared you'd say we're going to the hospital to see a patient. Linda would definitely not agree."
Alexander sneered. "Do you think I'm as dumb as you?"
"You haven't called me dumb in a while," Lillian said, taking her clothes to the bathroom.
When they came out, Lillian said, "I still don't know which hospital Debra is in. I called Leo this morning, but he didn't answer. I'll call again."
"Leo?' muttered Alexander. His eyes narrowed dangerously. But Lillian didn't notice. She was used to calling him that and didn't think it was unusual.
"Don't call him. I've already had someone check it. I know which hospital Debra is in," Alexander said.
