Chapter 363 I Better Run First
Alexander said, "I just think you lacked motherly love in your childhood, and I don't want you to keep missing out on it."
"But my childhood is over. What's the point of her coming back now?" Lillian said with a tearful face, looking pitiful.
"But honey, don't you long for motherly love? She's coming back this time to make it up to you. Don't you want to hear her explanation for what happened back then?" Alexander persuaded.
Lillian lowered her gaze, pondered for a moment, and then said, "Then I'll ask Oscar what he thinks tomorrow." Then she threw herself into Alexander's arms. "Honey, it turns out I have a mother."
Alexander tenderly stroked her hair and kissed her affectionately. "Don't overthink it. Get some sleep. Let's think about it tomorrow. Whatever it is, I'm here with you."
The next day, Lillian went to talk to Oscar. After a night of deep thought, Oscar's views differed from Lillian's.
"I don't want to accept her," a trace of sadness flashed in Oscar's eyes as he said, "In my heart, she doesn't deserve to be my mother."
"But Oscar, have you thought about it? She must have had her reasons." Lillian said.
"Lillian, I understand the hardships she faced. But I simply cannot come to terms with the fact that she abandoned us. Please don't try to persuade me anymore. How you choose to act is your own decision, but I will never accept her."
Seeing that Oscar wasn't open to discussion, Lillian didn't push it further. No matter how you sliced it, both sides had their points. Without Alexander's guidance, she might have ended up thinking just like Oscar.
Today was the third day of the holiday. Tom had been clamoring in the group chat about going out for dinner tonight, insisting that everyone respond.
Lillian smiled at her phone and showed it to Alexander. "Tom said we need to reply."
Alexander, holding the kids, glanced over. "Everyone in the group has more important things to do than him, and he still acts like a leader."
Lillian replied, "After all, he's your relative, so we should show some respect."
After a while, only Wendy hadn't replied in the group chat. Tom specifically sent a message to her: [Wendy, still in bed? Reply when you see this.]
Lillian knew Wendy was pretending not to see it; she was avoiding Caspian.
After a long time, Wendy still hadn't replied. Tom couldn't wait any longer and sent her another message: [Wendy, if you don't reply, I'll assume you're coming to the dinner.]
Wendy sat cross-legged on her bed, looking at the message on her phone, and sighed softly.
Seeing the situation, she knew she couldn't avoid it. Besides, she missed Lillian and Angela and had so much to share with them. Yet, the thought of seeing Caspian made her uneasy, with nowhere to rest her eyes. She deeply regretted her drunken confession that day.
Meanwhile, Samantha, dressed elegantly, came downstairs with Leah, who was also dressed up.
"Mom, are you and Leah going out?" Lillian asked curiously, sensing it was for an important event.
Samantha said, "Taking Leah to a blind date and then for afternoon tea."
Lillian raised her eyebrows in surprise and looked at Leah. "Leah, good luck."
Leah had a sullen face and looked helpless, saying nothing.
"Honey, it seems Samantha has regained her spirit," Lillian said, watching Samantha and Leah get into the car through the window. "That sharp look in her eyes is so familiar."
"My mother could never stay down for long." Alexander also looked over, silently sighing and feeling a bit sorry for Ethan.
In the evening, Tom booked a luxurious private room at a five-star restaurant under the Whale Group.
Wendy hesitated at the hotel entrance, not daring to go in. Since she had broken up, she hadn't seen Caspian. The mere thought of seeing him tonight filled her with a mix of nervousness, excitement, and embarrassment, causing her to shrink back.
"Wendy!" Tom and Caspian got out of the car and saw her. Tom waved at her happily and called out.
Wendy glanced back, and her face quickly flushed a deep red, right up to her ears, with her heart starting to race chaotically.
'He's here,' Wendy thought nervously biting her lip as she watched Caspian walk closer. As the distance between them narrowed, Wendy felt her breath becoming shallow. Suddenly, she turned around and swiftly ran away.
"Wendy! Why are you running?" Tom shouted after her.
'It's too awkward. I better run first!' Wendy shouted in her mind, covering her flushed face and quickly entering the elevator, trying to buy some time. She found the private room and saw Lillian and Angela already chatting on the sofa. Then she rushed over.
"Why is your face so red?" Lillian asked. "It's not that cold outside today."
Angela laughed, immediately guessing what happened, and asked teasingly, "Did you see Caspian? I can hear your heartbeat from here."
Wendy clutched her chest, nodding. "It's too awkward."
"Besides being awkward, don't you miss him?" Lillian teased.
Wendy looked at her two gloating friends and asked sternly, "Are you still my good friends?"
"Alright, let's stop talking about it. Wendy's mad," Angela said, laughing and patting her chest. "You need to act like you don't care at all."
"I'm such a coward. The moment I saw him, I turned and fled!" Wendy picked up the water glass from the coffee table, took a sip, and asked, "Does my reaction mean I haven't given up yet?"
"He might think you're mad at him for rejecting you," Lillian analyzed.
Angela looked behind Wendy and saw Caspian and Tom walking in. She nodded towards them. "He's here."
Wendy tried to stay calm and muttered, "Don't look at him. Just think of him as a cabbage. I've moved on. I deserve better."
"Well said," Angela teased, patting her shoulder.
Tom walked over and gave Wendy a hard pat on the shoulder. "Why did you run earlier? Are Caspian and I that scary?"
"Be gentle; you're hurting her," Angela said, displeased.
Wendy winced in pain and snapped, "I was just in a hurry to go to the bathroom. Mind your own business. Stay away from me."
Tom looked at his hand in surprise and joked, "Am I a martial arts genius?"
Caspian called out to them, "Stop messing around and come over."
Upon hearing his words, Wendy's heart skipped a beat, and her palms were sweaty.
