Chapter 369 The Strange Sound of Lock Picking
Wendy comforted Kimberly, "Kimberly, it's okay now."
Kimberly curled up on the bed, hugging her legs and crying in fear, "Wendy, I'm sorry, I didn't want him to follow me! He's so scary!"
Wendy patted her shoulder and said indignantly, "Nathan is crossing the line. Every time you get mad and break up with him, he hits you. Kimberly, you need to protect yourself."
Kimberly cried, "I want to, but how can I protect myself? You saw it, he hits me whenever he wants, I can't fight back at all!"
Caspian stood nearby, frowning, and said to Wendy, "Let her calm down by herself. Come out and eat."
The two of them sat back at the dining table. Wendy said angrily, "Nathan is such a jerk. How can he hit Kimberly, his girlfriend?"
"Does he often come to the house and cause trouble?" Caspian asked coldly.
Wendy said, "When their relationship is good, it's fine when he comes over. But when they argue, it's really scary! One time, it was loud enough to attract the neighbors."
Caspian looked serious, "You should get a new roommate. Find a new one by the end of this month."
After so many incidents, Wendy had long wanted to change roommates, but no one at her company wanted to share an apartment, and she was too scared to live alone, so she had been dragging it out.
"No suitable person."
"Do you have any requirements for a roommate? I'll keep an eye out for you."
"Not really, just someone decent and not too much trouble. Not like Kimberly, I'm really scared!"
Caspian served her some food and said, "Got it. I'll make sure she finds a place and moves out soon."
Wendy was happy to see him so concerned about her situation. Eating the food he served her, she felt even more content.
Suddenly, Caspian received a phone call, interrupting their conversation.
He answered, "What's up?"
The phone's sound was just right, and Wendy, sitting across from him, vaguely heard the name "Evelyn." She continued eating calmly, but the happiness she felt moments ago turned into sadness.
"Got it, I'll head over now," Caspian said, then hung up the phone.
"Are you leaving? Can't you finish eating first?" Wendy asked.
Caspian grabbed his coat and said, "I have something to take care of. I won't eat. Lock the door tonight and stay safe. Call me if you need anything."
Wendy saw him at the door and said goodbye. She closed the door, glanced at Kimberly's room, and then went back to her room.
"Stop sweet-talking me. How many days has it been since you last came? Are you addicted to being Evelyn's boyfriend? Do you want to make it real?" Brenda sat on the couch, painting her nails, and mocked, "Let me remind you, do you even know what you've done? Don't get any ideas. If Evelyn finds out what you've done, she'll hate you."
Amos grinned and tried to hug her, saying, "Honey, I've been really busy lately. I got a project from Evelyn's father, so there's a lot to do. Even though I'm not with you, you're always on my mind."
Brenda swiftly dodged and sneered, "Alright. Evelyn is from a wealthy family, it's no surprise you want to be with her."
"How could I be that ungrateful?" Amos shouted.
Brenda scoffed, "You sure seem like it. I know you can't leave me because I have all the evidence of your misdeeds. Otherwise, you would have broken up with me long ago!"
"Honey, you can't say that."
Amos lost in his fantasies, said, "Once we get Evelyn's money, we'll leave here together. The money we've saved over the years will be enough to keep us going for a long time."
Brenda put down her nail polish and said, "I thought Evelyn was just an ordinary rich person, but it turns out her family is pretty famous in Rihegde. You need to be careful. She may trust you completely, but her friends are not easy to deal with. They all come from top families in Rihegde. If they target you, you're done for."
"I know that. She was angry and suspicious last time, but after I got beaten up, she was moved. Now she completely trusts me. Otherwise, she wouldn't have let her father give me the project."
Brenda sneered, "She's really stupid."
"The project will be finished around May, maybe late April if we're quick. Just endure a few more months. Once we get the money, we'll leave immediately!" Amos hugged Brenda and said, "Then we'll be together forever!"
Outside, the sky darkened. Wendy dozed off while watching TV and woke up to find it was already past nine. She got out of bed, grabbed her clothes, and headed to the bathroom for a shower.
In the living room, Kimberly was having dinner. Seeing Wendy, she asked, "Want some?"
"No, you go ahead. By the way, there's some food I made this afternoon in the fridge. If you like it, heat it and eat it," Wendy said as she headed to the bathroom.
The bathroom was close to the door, and she suddenly heard a faint noise outside, like someone was trying to pick the lock.
She felt a chill run down her spine, standing there frozen as she listened intently.
After a moment, Wendy tiptoed back to the living room and whispered to Kimberly, "Go listen at the door. Is there a sound?"
Kimberly was surprised, put down her fork, and walked to the door with Wendy. Looking through the peephole, she saw no one outside, just the lit hallway.
"There's no one there," Kimberly said. "Did you hear wrong?"
Wendy was puzzled too. She was sure she heard the sound of someone picking the lock!
"This neighborhood is well-managed, there shouldn't be any bad people," Kimberly said apologetically. "Wendy, are you scared because of what happened today? I'm sorry. Mr. Wade's people have already called me to move out. I'm sorry for the trouble I've caused you."
Wendy said, "I'm fine. You should think about what to do next. Staying with someone like Nathan will only hurt you." She finished and went into the bathroom.
After a refreshing shower, Wendy got into bed and continued watching her TV show. Slowly, she fell asleep again. She had a nightmare in her sleep and woke up suddenly. She took a few deep breaths and got out of bed to get some water.
As she walked back to her room from the kitchen, in the quiet space, she heard someone picking the lock again! This time she was sure she didn't hear wrong because there were also whispers outside.
Wendy was terrified. 'The door was locked; it shouldn't open, right?' Thinking this, she turned and went back to the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife, and knocked on Kimberly's door.
