Chapter 427 Treating Him to a Meal
Time passed by the second. Those waiting outside the operating room were anxious and worried, all praying for the surgery to go smoothly.
The light above the operating room finally went out.
Wendy suddenly stood up and shouted to Patrick, "Dad, the surgery is over!"
Patrick didn't seem as anxious as Wendy. He just sat there with his eyes closed, resting. Upon hearing this, he opened his eyes, glanced upward, and slowly stood up, calmly waiting at the door of the operating room.
However, no matter how composed he appeared, his uninjured hand was trembling slightly, which Caspian noticed.
Standing beside Patrick, Caspian softly said, "Patrick, Jessica will be fine."
The doctor came out of the operating room, smiling as he said to the three of them, "The surgery was very successful!"
Wendy couldn't control her emotions, tears streaming down as she excitedly asked, "My mom is okay?"
"She's fine. Don't cry."
Patrick gratefully said to the doctor, "Thank you, doctor."
"Alright, the patient will be out in a moment." The doctor nodded slightly and turned to leave.
Not long after, Jessica was wheeled out.
Wendy hurried forward, softly calling, "Mom, Mom?"
Jessica slowly opened her eyes, looking at Wendy and Patrick, weakly asking, "Am I okay?"
"Mom, the surgery was very successful! You're okay!" Wendy held her hand, crying as she spoke.
Jessica managed a weak smile, "I'm okay, why are you still crying?"
The nurse said, "We'll take the patient back to the ward first."
Wendy cried tears of joy. Caspian walked over, put his arm around her shoulder, and said, "Stop crying, the surgery was successful, we should be happy."
Wendy, overwhelmed with emotion, leaned into his arms, crying, "The surgery was successful, everything is fine. I won't cry anymore!"
In the ward, Jessica woke up. Although weak, she still wanted to talk to Patrick.
"Where are Wendy and Caspian?" she asked.
Patrick replied, "It's already evening, they went to get dinner."
Jessica's hand reached out from under the blanket, gently holding his fingers, and she said emotionally, "Honey, without you by my side, I was really scared when I went into the operating room."
"I was very scared outside too." Patrick held Jessica's hand and said, "Wendy was so worried she couldn't sit still. I couldn't let her see my worry, so I had to pretend to be calm. But in my heart, I was silently praying for the surgery to be successful. Thankfully, you came out safe and sound."
Jessica's eyes reddened, "I can't bear to leave you all. How could I go? Wendy has just started living the life she wants. I still want to see all the wonderful things in her future work and life."
"Wonderful things in work and life?" Patrick asked in surprise, "You're not fixated on Wendy's job anymore? Haven't you always had a grudge about it?"
Jessica gently shook her head, "Honey, during the surgery, I had a dream that Wendy, under our strict control, couldn't release her pressure and went astray. In the dream, I was so angry and anxious, wondering how she could do that! When I woke up, the first thought in my mind was that I shouldn't control so much. Fortunately, it was just a dream."
Patrick laughed, "I didn't expect that a surgery could resolve your inner conflict."
Jessica said, "Didn't we reflect on our overly strict control of Wendy before? But I never wanted to admit my mistake. This dream completely changed my mind. As long as she works hard and progresses, what does it matter where she works? Besides, it's a job she loves, which is so rare. How many people get to do what they love? Honey, I think I was too much before. How could I treat my daughter like that?"
Seeing her getting a bit emotional, Patrick quickly comforted her, "Don't get emotional. Wendy has always understood you. If she knew you think this way now, she would be even happier."
Outside the door, Wendy stood against the wall. The slightly open door transmitted the conversation inside. Her heart was filled with mixed emotions. She pushed the door open and ran inside.
"Mom!" Wendy leaned on the bedside, tears blurring her vision, and said, "Mom, I heard everything you just said. Thank you, Mom!"
"Wendy, now I know that your happiness is more important than anything."
Wendy nodded heavily, "Mom, does your wound hurt? What do you want to eat? Caspian and I bought you some nutritious food."
Jessica looked towards the foot of the bed and saw Caspian standing there.
She said to Wendy, "I'm fine here, your dad is with me. Now that everything is settled and everyone is happy, you should take Caspian out for a meal to thank him. He's been through a lot these days."
"Jessica, it's okay. We can have a good meal together when you get discharged," Caspian said.
Patrick said, "Listen to Jessica, go ahead."
Wendy, in a good mood, said to Caspian, "Let's go. Why are you being so reserved? My mom is thanking you."
Caspian smiled and followed Wendy out of the ward.
The two entered the elevator, and Wendy said, "I'm not familiar with Atlanta either. Let's find a restaurant nearby. When we get back to Ridgewood, I'll treat you to a good meal."
"Alright, I'll follow your lead," Caspian replied with a smile. Seeing her happy and smiling again, his mood also brightened.
There was a Mexican restaurant near the hospital, and the two went in.
After ordering, Wendy couldn't help but order two bottles of beer.
"Can you drink? We still have to go back to the hospital," Caspian tried to stop her.
Wendy excitedly said, "Caspian, do you know? I'm so excited right now. My mom finally recognized my job. Do you know what that means to me? She finally doesn't see me as a child. In her eyes, I'm an adult now!"
"Yeah, I'm happy for you too. But I'm worried you'll get drunk and act out."
"How could I? We survived a car accident; my mom's surgery was successful, and she changed her view of my job. Aren't these things worth celebrating? One don't get drunk on happy occasions, only when he is in a bad mood."
"Alright, I'll join you," Caspian said, opening the beer on the table.
An hour later.
"Caspian, tell me, are you happy now?"
On the way back to the hospital, Wendy's cheeks were flushed. She held onto Caspian's arm, her entire weight leaning on him, slurring her words as she asked.
Caspian looked helpless. She said she wouldn't get drunk, but what was this now? How would he explain this to Patrick and Jessica when they got back?
"Tell me, are you happy now?" Wendy shook his arm twice, pressing for an answer.
Caspian said, "I'm always happy when I'm with you."
