Chapter 146 Alexander and Lillian's Late-Night Conversation
Lillian woke up after a lengthy sleep. In full darkness, she realized she was in bed. She rolled over, puzzled and suspicious. In the darkness, she saw Luke's little face facing her. She touched him and realized she was in Alexander's room.
She thought, ‘How did I get here? Did he lift me? I am wearing my pajamas instead of loungewear. Was it he who changed them for me?’
Alexander slowly turned over and gently asked, "Are you awake?"
Lillian was grateful for the room's darkness, which disguised her flush. She cautiously asked, "Did you carry me up here and help me change into my pajamas?"
"Yes," Alexander replied calmly. "I was scared that no one would help you use the restroom at night since you're pregnant, so I brought you to my room."
"Actually, I was wearing loungewear. There was no need to change into pajamas," Lillian said.
"I've seen it all before. It's more comfortable to sleep in pajamas," Alexander teased.
"Stop talking!" Lillian turned away in embarrassment, pulling the blanket over her head.
Alexander leaned over Luke and pulled the blanket down, saying to her, "Don't sleep with your head covered. If you're not sleepy, you can rest or chat with me."
"Let's sleep. We have work tomorrow," Lillian said.
Alexander said, "Mom and Grandma are coming to see you tomorrow. You should stay home."
'Alright,' Lillian thought to herself, 'Grandma and Mom are in such a hurry!'
After pondering, she asked, "Alexander, can I work in the future?"
Their relationship wasn't public yet, and with her morning sickness, her colleagues would surely speculate and gossip if they found out.
Alexander said, "Not working is also a form of protection for you. Just stay home and take care of yourself."
"But it is so boring," Lillian said pitifully.
"The weather is warming. Kelly offers daytime walks. You can also enroll in prenatal lessons with me. This way, you can kill time without getting bored," Alexander said. "I can also take you on a relaxing excursion in the second trimester."
Lillian was deeply moved yet worried. "You're treating me well. I can't handle you returning to your pre-baby self. Tone it down."
After hearing this, Alexander was angry and amused. "I'm not just nice to you because of the baby, but because you're the baby's mom. After birth, you must feed and care for the infant. I can't ignore you. I wouldn't be a man if I was decent to you merely because of the baby and then abandoned you."
Lillian's eyes filled with tears, her lips trembled slightly, and she clutched the blanket tightly. With a hint of disbelief, she asked, "Do you really think that way?"
"In the past, I misunderstood you and hurt you. That was my fault. Now, I will make up for the past and treat you well," Alexander said. Proud as he was, apologizing to Lillian was also not easy.
These made Lillian's tears flow quickly, bringing a sense of happiness.
She was silent for a while, then quietly asked, "Alexander, do you like me?"
Alexander didn't expect her to ask this suddenly.
Lillian continued, "Loving someone means being completely good to them. If you don't love me, this goodness won't last. You'll eventually find it burdensome."
Alexander pondered and then asked her, "Do you like me?"
Lillian panicked and quickly said, "Why are you asking me back?"
Alexander smiled. "Whether I like you or not is something to be discovered slowly in life. If you really don't like me in the future, then we can get a divorce."
He thought it best to leave the initiative to her. If he rashly said he liked her now, it would not only pressure her but also scare her.
Lillian clutched the blanket, feeling a slight sense of loss. The word 'divorce' made her feel really uncomfortable. 'If he doesn't like me, then so be it. For now, they were taking it one step at a time.'
After that, they didn't speak again. Lillian gradually fell asleep again. Alexander turned over gently, wondering when he would hear her say, "I like you."
The next day, as soon as Alexander woke up, he heard voices downstairs. He frowned and checked the time on his phone: 6:15 AM.
"They came too early!" He quickly got dressed, washed up, and went downstairs.
Linda chuckled as she asked, "Lillian should still be asleep, right? I had the cook make some pasta. Call her to eat when she wakes up."
"Grandma, didn't you sleep well last night? You have dark circles," Alexander teased.
Samantha said, "You're right. Your grandma barely slept last night. She didn't even have breakfast and dragged me over here."
"Grandma, let's have breakfast quickly," Alexander said, helping Linda towards the dining room.
Lillian woke up naturally and saw no one. She sat up, remembering that Linda and Samantha were coming today, and hurried downstairs.
Sure enough, she heard Linda and Samantha chatting in the living room. She slowed her hurried steps, looking for Alexander as she descended the stairs.
"Lillian, you're awake!" Linda called out happily. "Come here."
Lillian walked over, a bit embarrassed, and apologized, "Grandma, I'm sorry I got up late." She then looked at Samantha and greeted, "Mom, good morning."
Linda took her hand, made her sit down, and smoothed her hair, smiling. "You're pregnant. It's normal to love sleeping. Don't apologize to me."
"Lillian, go back to change your clothes. Just wearing pajamas will make you catch a cold easily," Samantha said.
"Okay," Lillian replied, heading towards her room.
Samantha asked suspiciously, "Where are you going?"
Lillian quickly responded, "My walk-in closet is on the first floor."
Without speaking, Samantha nodded.
Lillian returned to her room, exhaled, and went to the wardrobe to find clothes. She thought, 'Alexander must have gone to work. Today, I would have to face Linda and Samantha alone. It's going to be tough.'
