Chapter 396 The Unhappy Caspian
Wendy and Aaron finished breakfast and discussed where to go next.
"How about we skip the movie? The theater will be crowded, and what if someone recognizes you?" Wendy said.
Aaron replied, "I'll wear a mask and a hat. We'll sit in the back row and go in after the movie starts. No one will notice."
Wendy imagined what he described, and seeing his insistence, she didn't want to spoil the mood. "Alright then," she said.
In the game room.
"I won!" Tom said happily, taking the cards Caspian played.
Caspian looked displeased. He hadn't won a single game today.
"I'm done." He pushed the cards away in frustration, grabbed a pack of cigarettes from the table, took one out, and lit it, taking a deep drag.
Alexander chuckled, "What's wrong with you? Losing a bit of money isn't that bad."
"It's not that. I'm just in a bad mood." Caspian frowned deeply, looking troubled. He took drags and stood up to leave.
Tom mysteriously beckoned the two over and whispered, "Have you noticed? Ever since Wendy and Aaron left, Caspian's been in a bad mood."
Alexander knocked Tom on the head, "Stop overthinking it. If he gets mad at you, we're not getting involved."
In the evening, Wendy and Aaron returned. Caspian was lounging on the living room sofa, and through the floor-to-ceiling window, he saw them walking hand in hand towards the door. He furrowed instantly, and he looked displeased.
Wendy and Aaron, holding hands, felt a mix of shyness, nervousness, and excitement, but also a bit awkward. Wendy wondered if things were moving too fast or if this was just how dating worked. However, she didn't pull her hand away when Aaron held it.
As they entered, they immediately saw Caspian on the sofa. Wendy hesitated and reflexively tried to pull her hand away, but Aaron held it tightly.
"Caspian, where are the others?" Aaron asked, holding a cake box in his other hand. "Wendy and I are dating now, and we bought a cake to celebrate with everyone."
Caspian remained comfortably slouched on the sofa, squinting at their joined hands and then looking up at Wendy.
"They're playing cards," he said slowly.
Wendy felt a bit scared under his gaze, which was like a predator eyeing its prey.
At that moment, Lillian came downstairs, saw them holding hands, and teased, "Back from your date?"
"Yeah, we bought a cake. Want some?" Wendy asked, her cheeks flushed.
"Of course, I want cake. I'll call Angela down too." Lillian quickly sent Angela a message on Facebook.
Aaron said, "You guys chat. I'll go to the game room to see them play cards."
In the dining room, Lillian thoughtfully cut half the cake and asked Gina to take it to Lucas. The Jacksons had been playing with the kids these past few days, spending quality time together.
"So, what did you talk about? Where did you go?" Lillian asked curiously, licking the cream off her fingers.
Wendy, eating cake, reported, "We had breakfast at a restaurant, then went to a movie. We went in after it started. After the movie, he had the driver take us for a drive around the city while we chatted and got to know each other. Then we bought a cake and came back. Time flew by, and we didn't do much."
Angela asked, "Are you officially dating now?"
"Yeah, we're both taking it as a trial. He's two years older than me and also pressured by his family to get married. We share that in common," Wendy said with a smile.
"Well, as long as you feel it's right," Angela said.
Wendy hesitated, biting her fork, and asked, "What's up with Caspian? When we came back, he looked at me with such a scary gaze."
"Ignore him," Angela said dismissively, cutting a piece of cake. "I'm taking this to Ivan."
"Can you stop being so mushy?" Lillian protested seriously.
Angela retorted, "What's wrong with that? He's my boyfriend."
As she left, Lillian rested her chin on her hand and said wistfully, "I feel like Angela's so fake. It looks like she's in a relationship, but it doesn't feel genuine."
"That's because he's a stand-in," Wendy sighed. "I've said it before, this won't work. How can you give your love to a stand-in? She's just fooling herself."
"But she won't listen. She has to realize it herself one day, or our words are just wasted time."
After talking about Angela, Lillian turned her attention back to Wendy.
"Did Aaron get recognized by fans today?"
Wendy thought for a moment and said, "We entered the restaurant from the back door, so no one saw us. The movie theater wasn't crowded, so I don't think anyone noticed. We were in the car after that, and I went to buy the cake with the driver. It seemed pretty safe."
"Can you handle dating like this all the time?"
"I don't know. It definitely won't be like a normal couple. If Aaron goes to shoot a movie, we might not see each other for two or three months." Wendy propped her head on her hand and said, "Spending time with him today was okay. He was considerate and not annoying. He's a star for a reason. He also told me about the inconveniences of his job, and all I can do is understand."
Seeing her a bit down, Lillian asked, "Are you thinking about Caspian?"
"Yeah," Wendy nodded weakly. "I'm just wondering why he said those things this morning and why he looked at me like that when we came back. What does he mean? I don't know if it's my imagination, but it feels like he's jealous."
"Maybe. You gave up on Caspian and started dating someone else. He might feel upset, thinking how could you move on so quickly? He probably can't handle it and feels a sense of loss."
Wendy thought for a long time and then said quietly, "So you think it's just a sense of loss and not that he realized he likes me? You're right. He's deeply in love with Evelyn. How could I easily replace her? I'm just dreaming."
