Chapter 367 Forgiving Clara
Clara spotted Lillian, held back her excitement, smiled, and gently said, "Lillian, come over here."
Lillian slowly walked over, sat down next to Alexander, and asked, "Did Aunt Lisa tell you my address?"
Clara said, "Don't blame Lisa, she wants us to get comfortable with each other quickly."
After saying that, Clara tentatively asked, "Oscar hasn't come down? How's he doing?"
Lillian said, "He's not feeling well and doesn't want to come downstairs."
Clara took this perfunctory answer seriously and asked anxiously, "Is he not feeling well? Should he see a doctor?"
Alexander said, "I'll go check on Oscar. You two take your time to talk."
He patted Lillian's shoulder, giving them space to talk.
The two strangers looked at each other, the air filled with awkwardness.
"Lillian," Clara choked as she moved closer to Lillian, trying to hold her hand.
Lillian instinctively pulled away, averted her gaze, and said indifferently to Clara, "If you have something to say, just say it."
Clara was stunned, and awkwardly withdrew her hand, her eyes full of sadness.
Clara tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, forced a smile, and said softly, "I don't expect your forgiveness now, I just hope you can give me a chance to make it up to you and Oscar, okay?"
Lillian pressed her lips tightly, "Oscar and I are doing fine now, we don't need any compensation."
"Lillian, I owe you both too much, please give me a chance, okay?" Clara's voice was choked with sobs, filled with desperation.
Lillian couldn't help but turn to look at her, angrily asking, "Why should I give you a chance? When you abandoned Oscar and me, did you ever think about today? You only cared about your difficulties, but did you think about Oscar and me? We grew up being ridiculed and living off someone else. How can you compensate for the scars in our hearts?"
Clara started crying, continuously admitting, "It's my fault, I was too selfish! Back then, I was going through a living nightmare, thinking every day about how to escape your father's abuse. I heartlessly abandoned you, I shouldn't have done that. All these years, I've been thinking about you both."
Lillian's nose tingled with her tears, and she also started crying, "I hated you so much! When I was little, other kids had mothers, but we didn't. When I grew up and found out Oscar was sick, I didn't even have a close person to rely on. Now you want to make it up! What can you make up for? We have everything we need now, but how can you make up for the childhood trauma?"
Clara hugged her, crying, "Lillian, I'll use the rest of my life to make it up to you, never leaving you again. Okay? I'll gradually make up for the motherly love you missed out on in the first twenty years."
Lillian cried even harder, "Why did you suddenly come back to find us? Oscar and I are doing very well and are very happy now. Why did you come back?"
"You and Oscar are my children. Now that I have the ability, of course, I want to come back and find you!" Clara wiped her tears and said, "I now have a few restaurant chains in Elmrest, and your stepfather is also the CEO of a listed company, a very nice person. He came back with me this time. My life is very happy now, but you two have always been on my mind, I can't ignore you."
"My stepfather?" Lillian was stunned, then realized, "So, you remarried."
Clara took out a tissue to wipe her tears, smiled bitterly, and said, "Having someone to help makes many things easier. When I first went to Elmrest alone, I suffered a lot. Later, I met him, and he helped me a lot. When I left, I didn't go through the divorce procedures with your father. Later, I heard he passed away, and then I married your stepfather."
Talking about her current husband, Simon Johnson, Clara couldn't help but smile, "He's a very good person, low-key and humble, and treats me very well. He came back with me this time, and he said he wants to invite you and Oscar to dinner."
Lillian calmed down slightly, she wiped her tears and looked at her.
Clara's face was no longer young, but it was well-maintained; her round eyes were eagerly looking at her as if waiting for her to say something. She suddenly realized that she and Clara looked so much alike that people would think they were mother and daughter.
Lillian felt compassion, wanting to give Clara a chance to make amends because Lillian longed for motherly love.
"Lillian, forgive me, okay?" Clara asked cautiously.
Lillian turned away, aggrieved, and said, "You adults are so good at this. You make mistakes and let us bear the consequences, then come back twenty years later asking for forgiveness. Why are we kids so unlucky?"
Although Lillian's tone was complaining, it was clear she was accepting.
Clara was stunned for a moment, then tentatively asked, "Lillian, have you forgiven me?"
Lillian pouted, and helplessly said, "What can I do? You're the only mother I have. I've never felt motherly love."
Clara hugged her tightly again, crying with joy, "Lillian, thank you! I'll give you and Oscar all my love to make up for everything!"
Clara's freshly dried tears flowed down her cheeks again.
Lillian said, "Don't make promises yet. We're not kids anymore. I think it's time for me to let you enjoy life."
Clara gratefully hugged Lillian, "Thank you!"
"Don't be too happy yet. I've forgiven you, but Oscar hasn't. He doesn't even want to see you. Think about what to do."
Clara sighed in distress, "When I left, Oscar was just a baby, and now he's all grown up. I need to think about how to mend our relationship."
She muttered to herself for a few moments, then said, "Your stepfather Simon wants to invite you all to dinner. You and your husband, bring Oscar along. I think the men can communicate better."
"Let's talk about the dinner later." Lillian thought for a moment and said, "I'll try to persuade Oscar at home first. But if he insists on his own will, I won't force him."
"Okay, thank you." Clara, having settled Lillian down, so she can finally relax.
After that, the two talked for a long time. Seeing it was getting late, Clara had to leave.
Lillian saw her out and said, "Rihegde has changed a lot now. If you want to visit the places you used to stay, call me if you can't find them, and I'll take you."
"Okay, I'll find you." Clara touched her face, "I'm busy with some business with the local investors these two days. After that, you can take me around Rihegde."
After seeing Clara off, Lillian went straight upstairs to Oscar's room.
Alexander and Oscar were playing mobile games. Seeing her come in, he asked, "She left?"
"Yes, she left." Lillian sat on the sofa, looked at Oscar, and tentatively asked, "Oscar, do you not forgive her?"
