Chapter 105 Strive For
Gradually, Evelyn started to feel drowsy, propping her face with one hand as she dozed off.
She was startled awake when Robert arrived, her eyes half-closed as she asked, "How's Ms. Spencer and everyone else?"
Robert handed her a glass of water, sounding pretty chill. "They're all good. Everyone's fine. You should get some rest; I'll keep an eye on Cecil."
Evelyn took a sip and shook her head. "Nah, I'm used to handling kids."
But then she remembered the kidnapping and asked, "Robert, why did the kidnapper take Cecil? And did they catch him?"
Robert scratched his chin, trying to figure out how to explain. "The kidnapper is Cecil's dad."
Evelyn's eyes went wide, and she was instantly awake. "What? Cecil's dad? You mean Ms. Porter's ex?"
Robert nodded. "Yeah, he did it for money. Didn't care about Cecil's life at all. He even had a gun; Ms. Porter and Ms. Spencer almost got shot."
Evelyn frowned. "How could this happen?"
"I don't get it either, but Finnian pointed the gun right at Cecil. Scared the hell out of us."
Evelyn felt a chill and reached out to touch the sleeping Cecil, feeling reassured by his warmth. "Did they catch the kidnapper?"
Robert shook his head, then paused and nodded.
Evelyn was puzzled. "So, he escaped and then got caught again?"
Robert realized he was being confusing and didn't want to scare her by saying Finnian was dead.
He hesitated, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn't.
Evelyn looked at him seriously. "Robert, just tell me. I can handle it."
Seeing she was serious, Robert finally said, "It was a critical situation, and he got shot dead on the spot. I was late because I was dealing with the cops."
"Dead?" Evelyn lowered her head, staring blankly at the bed.
Just as Robert thought she was scared and was about to comfort her, Evelyn's tone changed sharply. "Good riddance!"
Robert couldn't help but laugh at how quickly her mood shifted. She had gotten a lot braver since hanging out with Diana.
But then Evelyn's tone got serious again, and she whispered, "Robert, do you think Mr. Percy would reject Ms. Spencer's baby if he knew about it?"
Robert got what she meant. Charles was way more sinister and ruthless than Finnian. They had thought they could use the kid to control Charles, but now it seemed Diana's idea was right.
How could a cold-hearted guy love a kid from a woman he didn't care about? Robert felt guilty for pushing Diana to have the kid earlier.
Evelyn also felt awkward, realizing it was best not to have the kid after what happened with Cecil.
The next day, after a good night's sleep, everyone felt better.
Isolde almost immediately went to find Cecil when she woke up, relieved to see he was okay, though still a bit shaken.
Before she could spend more time with Cecil, the company called, saying two elderly people were causing a scene at the entrance, accusing the Porter Group of trampling on human life.
Isolde didn't need to think twice to know it was Finnian's parents causing trouble. She told her staff to ignore them and have security kick them out.
But Diana suggested Isolde handle it quickly to avoid any negative public opinion that could hurt the Porter Group.
Isolde thought about it and sneered. "Public opinion? They better not mess with me. I've been the victim from the start. Finnian cheated and kidnapped Cecil. The public would eat that up. I might even get some sympathy and boost the Porter Group's stock."
Diana was taken aback, realizing she hadn't thought of it that way.
Isolde, remembering the events of the previous night, frowned and took Diana's hand. "If Charles gives you a hard time, just let me know. I'll help however I can."
Diana nodded. Even though Charles wasn't a good guy, they owed him for what he did yesterday. As long as his demands weren't too crazy, she'd try to meet them.
Isolde wanted to say more, but Robert called Diana out of the room. They walked to the stairwell where it was quieter.
Diana, sensing something was up, turned to see Evelyn there too. "What's going on with you two? Why so secretive?"
Robert and Evelyn exchanged a look, sighed, and said together, "We're sorry."
Diana was confused and took a step back. "What did you do that you need to apologize for?"
Evelyn, looking guilty, said softly, "Ms. Spencer, you were right. You can't keep the baby."
Robert added, "After last night, we realized some fathers really don't care about their kids. We're sorry for suggesting you keep the baby."
Diana looked between the two, raising an eyebrow. "So now you realize this baby is a ticking time bomb?"
They both nodded silently, looking ashamed.
Diana, not one to hold grudges, said, "Don't worry, I know you meant well. I'm not that vengeful. When I married Charles, he said if I had his kid, he'd strangle it himself."
"Ms. Spencer, we should terminate the pregnancy soon while it's still early. I can take care of you," Evelyn said softly, relieved that Diana wasn't too attached to the baby.
Diana nodded. There had been too much going on lately. Although an abortion wasn't a major surgery, it still required proper rest afterward. But with everything happening, Diana had no time to focus on the baby.
"I've been too busy lately to have the surgery, but I'll do it in a few days."
"I'll help you at the company. It's better than you handling everything alone," Robert suggested, pushing his glasses up.
This surprised Diana. She had wanted Robert to join the Spencer Group before, but he had declined, saying the Spencer Group was unstable. She didn't expect him to offer help now.
"Great! I've always wanted an assistant like Nolan. Robert, I have high hopes for you!" Diana patted Robert's shoulder, smiling slyly.
Robert chuckled awkwardly, unsure if he had made the right decision.
A phone ringing interrupted them. Diana took out her phone and frowned. 'Lily? Isn't she the intern? Why is she calling me?'
