Chapter 26 Investigating the Case

Dean stared at the message from Sophia, and he just couldn't hold it in anymore. This tall guy, sitting at his computer, started bawling his eyes out.

He quickly wiped his tears, cleared his vision, and shot back a reply.

[B]: You're really back! This is amazing, you're not dead!

[B]: Where are you? I'll come find you right now.

[B]: How have you been these past few days?

[B]: Why are you only telling me today that you're alive? Do you know how hard I cried at the funeral? Were you hiding and laughing at me?

Instead of texting back, Diana sent a voice message. She couldn't video call Dean right now. After all, Diana looked totally different from Sophia.

It was tough to explain her rebirth in a short time, but luckily, Diana's voice was pretty similar to Sophia's.

Dean fumbled to answer the call, suddenly remembering the forum had a call function. He'd been too anxious and forgot about it.

"Hello?" Dean's voice shook, still in disbelief, until he heard that familiar voice on the other end.

"Dean, it's me, I'm still alive," Diana said.

There was silence, then Dean started sobbing again.

Sophia found his tears both frustrating and funny.

Dean was a 6-foot-tall tough guy, usually looking all stern, but emotionally, he was more sensitive than a girl.

Diana comforted him, "Alright, stop crying. You cried when I died, and now you're crying because I'm alive. You're gonna cry away all your luck."

Dean chuckled at her familiar words, feeling a huge weight lift off his shoulders.

After hearing about Sophia's death, Dean had been in a fog, unable to accept that someone so strong could just die like that.

Still sniffling, Dean asked, "What the hell happened? I went on a mission. When I came back, Grant said you were dead. You nailed so many tough missions, how could you just die? He said you were injected with an overdose of drugs."

Sophia sneered. That bastard Grant. He set her up, and she was dumb enough to fall for it.

"My death is closely tied to him. When I get back, I'll deal with him properly. By the way, how's Hestia?" asked Sophia.

Dean replied, "Both your fiancé and best friend are no good. Hestia and Grant got married less than half a month after you were gone."

Dean was pissed, but he hadn't figured out the truth behind Sophia's death, so he hadn't had a chance to deal with Hestia Sharp and Grant.

Sophia wasn't surprised at all. Hestia and Grant, those two jerks, she'd deal with them eventually. But for now, she had other things to handle.

Sophia's voice turned serious as she said, "Dean, I need you to do something for me. Look into the case of the Percy Group heir being kidnapped at 13."

Dean didn't react right away, but thinking it might be related to Sophia's mission, he agreed, "Okay."

"The kidnappers should have sold a gem. If there's any news about the gem, buy it back for me. I'll give you an address later," Sophia continued. Right now, she was broke, and the only reliable person around was Dean.

Dean agreed to everything, but knowing Sophia was still alive, he couldn't wait to see her. So he paused and carefully asked, "Sophia, can I come see you?"

Sophia was silent for a bit. She needed to sort out Diana's situation first before explaining her rebirth to Dean. Now wasn't the best time to meet.

Dean only heard Sophia's somewhat distant voice on the other end. "Dean, I have things to handle right now. Once they're done, we can meet."

"Okay, can I still contact you?" Dean asked.

Back in the organization, if they weren't on the same mission, sometimes they wouldn't contact each other for months because of confidentiality.

Dean had never asked Sophia to do such dangerous things before. But as partners, they were more than just colleagues; they were life-and-death friends.

After experiencing Sophia's "death," Dean realized their friendship ran way deeper than he had ever imagined.

Sophia chuckled and replied, "You can hit me up every day, but you gotta finish that task in three days, or I'll kick your butt when we meet."

Dean laughed at the familiar threat. "Alright, alright, I'll definitely get it done for you."

"By the way, keep an eye on Grant and Hestia for me. Let me know immediately if they make any moves." Sophia's eyes narrowed, a hint of menace flashing in them.

Dean said, "What exactly did Grant do to you? I'll find a chance to take him out. If I get caught, I'll leave the organization and work with you."

Dean's tone was hostile. He had always thought there was something fishy about Sophia's death. Now that he could identify the culprit, he naturally wanted to avenge her.

The current "Sword of Damocles" was no longer the admirable organization it once was; it was no longer worth staying in.

Sophia shook her head; she wanted to handle this herself.

Whether it was Diana's revenge or her own, she wanted to take back everything she had lost.

Sophia replied, "No need, just keep an eye on them for me. I'll take care of my own revenge."

Dean knew Sophia's character well, so he didn't say more, only reminding her to take care of herself.

They didn't talk for long. Seeing it was getting late, Sophia ended the call. She then cleared all traces on the computer and left.

When she got home, Evelyn had already prepared dinner and was waiting for her.

Seeing Diana return, Evelyn's face lit up with joy. She grabbed her hand to check if she was hurt. "Ms. Spencer! You're back, are you okay? Did Mr. Percy trouble you?"

Diana sniffed, the dining room was filled with the aroma of food. "I'm fine, see, I came back safely. Where's Robert? Call him to join us for dinner."

Evelyn nodded and went upstairs to find Robert.

Robert was in the study reading legal documents. Hearing that Diana was back, he went downstairs to ask her what to do next. "We just received a bill from the Percy Group. Our current debt is $20 million."

"How much?" Diana was about to take a bowl, but she almost dropped it when she heard that. "Wasn't it $9.99 million before? How did it suddenly become $20 million?"

Robert adjusted his glasses and handed the documents from the Percy Group to Diana.

They detailed various deficits and debts, totaling over $20 million.

Diana felt dizzy. 'How could this be? Could it be that Charles had reported $9.99 million as a discounted amount? Just because I argued with him, he decided to stop pretending and pushed all the debts onto me.' Thinking of this, Diana fell silent for a moment.

She could only hope that Dean would find the gem, so she would have the leverage to negotiate.

"I'll talk with Charles again this afternoon and ask him to pause the Spencer Group's asset liquidation," Diana offered.

Robert nodded and mentioned another discovery. "I also found another issue. After the Spencer Group was acquired, the Percy Group didn't send anyone to manage it. Instead, they gave money to Nathan to continue operating it, but it all went into deficit."

Diana frowned, sensing that things were not simple. "How much did the Percy Group invest?"

"$15 million," Robert replied.
