Chapter 27 No Entry
"Wait, are you telling me that even after Charles dumped $15 million into the Spencer Group, it's still not making any money and has been bleeding cash this whole time?" Diana thought for a second and then it hit her—ever since she got the house and company back, Nathan and Mia had been surprisingly quiet.
And Clara? She'd only thrown a few snide remarks her way at the office. Knowing Clara, if she was losing out, she'd be raising hell to get it back. Her staying calm was definitely out of character.
Robert nodded, looking suspicious. "Yeah, Nathan's been throwing money at all sorts of investments, but they're all flops. I think maybe..."
Before he could finish, Diana cut in, "Nathan and his family live off the Spencer Group. Even if he's bad at business, he could've hired a pro to keep things afloat. But no, he had to do it himself. He's so greedy, there's no way he'd just let his money go down the drain. Unless... he didn't actually invest it and just pocketed the cash, pretending it was for investments."
Diana clapped her hands, a creepy smile spreading across her face. "I never thought my useless dad had the guts to pull something like this. Looks like everyone's scheming against me, waiting for me to get divorced and buried in debt while they live it up."
The vibe at the table got real tense.
Robert felt a mix of emotions. Bianca had told him to reveal the will when Diana turned 24. But seeing how things were now, he couldn't imagine what kind of life Diana had been living.
Evelyn didn't dare say a word. She used to envy Clara's family, thinking rich folks had it easy, but now she saw it was all at Diana's expense.
Lost for words, Evelyn just served Diana a bowl of soup and gently placed it in front of her. "Ms. Spencer, don't be mad. Have some soup to calm down."
Robert chimed in awkwardly, "Yeah, we should let the Percy Group know about this. We can't just take this lying down."
Diana took a deep breath, calming herself and said, "Charles knows I'm broke. He loaded me with debt to push me over the edge. Telling him won't help; it's a miracle if he doesn't kick me while I'm down."
Seeing the debt jump from $9.99 million to $20 million, it was clear Charles wanted to crush her.
"Let's eat first. I'll get back everything Nathan stole." Diana said no more, and the three of them started eating, but it was unusually quiet.
They weren't as lively as the past few days. There had been some hope before, but now it felt like a dead end.
Diana regretted it as she thought about it. When she was rich, she never cared about money. Now, she was stressed over a mere $20 million. The irony was brutal.
After the meal, Diana left the house. Robert had offered to go with her, but she turned him down. She might end up fighting with Charles again, and it was better if Robert didn't see that.
At the Percy Group, Nolan was giving Charles a report.
As they wrapped up, Nolan suddenly remembered Diana had shown up at the parking lot yesterday.
Since Charles hadn't told him to clean up any mess, Diana must've been fine. So Nolan asked, "Mr. Percy, tomorrow's the Spencer Group's bankruptcy liquidation. I've got the lawyers ready to handle it."
Charles hadn't slept well and was nursing a coffee, still dealing with a headache. Hearing Nolan mention the Spencer Group, he just waved his hand in agreement, not really reacting.
Nolan was about to leave when Charles suddenly stopped him. "Wait, did you say the Spencer Group's bankruptcy liquidation is tomorrow?" Charles stopped rubbing his head and looked up slowly.
Nolan turned around and nodded respectfully. "Yes, I've scheduled a meeting with Ms. Spencer for tomorrow."
Nolan knew Charles wasn't fond of Diana, so he hadn't planned for them to meet. He figured he'd handle it all himself.
But then Charles, in a deep voice, said, "Postpone the bankruptcy liquidation." He waved Nolan out without further explanation.
Nolan was taken aback by Charles's sudden change of heart. 'Did something happen during his meeting with Diana yesterday?' he wondered. But his job was to follow orders, so he didn't ask any questions.
Meanwhile, Diana had already arrived downstairs at the Percy Group.
The receptionist, who recognized her, asked if she had an appointment.
Diana nodded, planning to bluff her way in.
But then Clara walked over, her tone icy. "Who's allowing uninvited guests in here?"
Seeing Clara, the receptionist quickly put on a serious face. "Ms. Williams, this lady said she has an appointment with Mr. Percy."
Clara crossed her arms and looked Diana up and down like she was something gross. "I'm Mr. Percy's secretary. How come I don't know about your appointment? Leave now, or I'll call security."
Diana mimicked Clara's stance and glared back. She was already taller than Clara, and with her high heels, she looked even more intimidating.
"This is a private appointment between Mr. Percy and me. It's none of your business," Diana shot back.
Clara sneered. If she didn't know how much Charles disliked Diana, she might've believed her. "Mr. Percy doesn't want to see you. How many times do I have to tell you to stop bothering him? Since he's not around, I advise you to leave quickly."
Diana was here to see Charles, but Clara blocking her way was making her lose patience. "Clara, I'm not in the mood to deal with you today. Move."
"You!" Clara couldn't believe Diana's arrogance, even after her divorce and the company's bankruptcy. 'How could she still be so arrogant?' Clara thought.
But then she remembered Diana was about to be $20 million in debt, and her anger cooled a bit. 'Let her flaunt her attitude; won't last for long,' she thought.
Clara pulled out her phone and called security. "Hello? Security? There's a disturbance at the front desk. Come over immediately."
In no time, two tall security guards showed up with batons, looking around for the troublemaker. "Ms. Williams, where's the person? Did they run away?"
Clara pointed at Diana. "Here she is, causing trouble. Get her out of here, and make sure she never sets foot in the company again."
The security guards saw Diana was just a woman, and a pretty one at that. They figured she was probably one of Charles's admirers, bold enough to chase him to the office.
They knew Charles had a wife, who was a bit of a problem. She often came to the company all dressed up to find Charles, only to be sent back.
The employees had often sighed, thinking that even the rich had their troubles. No matter how handsome and wealthy, he still married a woman he didn't love.
