Chapter 135 Apologies and Gratitude
Thinking back, Diana hadn't really smiled like that since the divorce. Not in front of Charles, anyway.
Diana's voice came through the screen. "You'll sleep in this bed. If it's not comfy, we can have someone change it."
"Ms. Spencer, seriously, it's fine. I can crash on the couch or even the floor." Evelyn was secretly pleased but knew they were in Charles' territory and didn't want to cause too much trouble.
Diana stood up, hands on her hips. "What's the big deal? I don't even know how long I'll be stuck in this hospital. I can boss Charles's people around all I want."
On the other end, Charles' lips tightened at her words. For a moment, he felt like storming over and strangling her.
"Ms. Spencer, what about that thing when we sleep?" Evelyn pointed at the surveillance camera. Suddenly, she gasped, "Ms. Spencer! Did it just move?"
Diana followed Evelyn's finger and saw the camera, which had been facing the bed, now pointed at her.
She stayed quiet and slowly approached the camera.
Charles frowned, watching Diana's face get closer on the screen, even seeing her eyelashes clearly.
"Are you watching?" Diana stared into the camera like she could see Charles through it.
Charles swallowed hard. Even though he knew she couldn't see him, he still moved the phone screen a bit further away.
"Ms. Spencer, it really did move," Evelyn's voice came from behind.
Diana turned and reassured her, "It's okay, get me a towel."
Evelyn nodded and quickly handed her a towel.
Diana looked at the camera again and said softly, "If you're watching, listen up. I'll uncover it during the day, but at night, forget about it, you creep."
Charles heard her last words clearly.
The next second, Diana covered the camera tightly.
The screen only captured her cheerful voice. "It's okay now, go to sleep. No one can see us!"
Charles' eyes were deep as he took a long drag of his cigarette. The glow flickered at his fingertips, and the smoke mingled with the night.
He suddenly smiled, turned off his phone, and tossed it aside, not mad at Diana.
The next day, Diana woke up to several missed calls from Robert, realizing Charles must have let him go too.
Because of the surveillance, Diana couldn't call back directly, so she sent Robert a message explaining the situation.
Diana focused on her phone, typing quickly.
Diana: [Sorry, Robert, this is my fault. You've always helped me a lot as my mom's friend. I'm really grateful. But Charles is not someone to mess with, so I'll give you some money, and you can leave whenever you want.]
Diana's words were sincere.
Robert, along with Evelyn and Isolde, though she hadn't known them for long, had become good friends through shared hardships.
When Diana was alone, she could face Charles head-on, but now that she had them, she had more to consider.
Half an hour later, Diana finally got a message from Robert.
Robert: [Do you think I'm the kind of guy who only cares about money and is scared of dying? Besides, no matter how powerful Charles is, he can't kill me. Diana, I believe in you. You're just as amazing as Bianca.]
Diana felt a lump in her throat. She needed these friends but didn't want to drag them down.
Diana: [Okay, Robert, I won't let you down.]
Robert: [Even though I believe in you, you still need to pay me.]
Robert replied so quickly that Diana laughed before she could even get emotional.
Diana: [Money-grubber.]
Despite her words, Diana still transferred $200,000 to Robert. It was money she had gotten from Nathan.
Evelyn also received the same amount and was so shocked her eyes widened.
Evelyn felt like she was rich now, thinking Diana was incredibly generous.
"Ms. Spencer! Is this all for me?" Evelyn asked in a low voice, mindful of the surveillance, her eyes full of surprise.
"Yes." Diana put down her phone and continued eating the nutritious food Brenda had brought her.
Since she found out that Charles had sent Evelyn to Mirage Nights Club, Diana felt a deep sense of guilt.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars might sound like a lot, but it couldn't buy a house in Evergreen City.
But for now, Diana hadn't fully taken back the Spencer Group and needed to keep some liquid funds.
Evelyn's face was flushed, and she said shyly, "Who pays their maid this much? Ms. Spencer, you should keep it for yourself. You've already given me a lot, and I haven't spent it all yet."
Diana glanced at her and teased, "What? Planning to leave once you get rich?"
"No way! Even if I become rich, I'd still want to stay with you!" Evelyn quickly waved her hands, afraid Diana would misunderstand, but seeing Diana's teasing expression, she realized Diana was joking. "Ms. Spencer, you're teasing me again!"
Diana couldn't help but laugh at Evelyn's annoyed and angry expression. "You believe everything I say, silly."
Evelyn pouted slightly and turned her head, deciding to give Diana the silent treatment for two minutes.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and Diana's expression froze, puzzled about who could be visiting at this time. "Come in."
"Hey, Diana!" Isolde walked in wearing a khaki trench coat, her hair cut short, looking clean and sharp.
If it weren't for the fact that Isolde was holding Cecil, Diana might not have recognized her right away. "Isolde? What are you doing here?"
Evelyn seemed to remember something and said, "Ms. Porter messaged me this morning, and I told her I was here with you."
"I saw Evelyn at Mirage Nights Club before and had someone keep an eye on her. When I found out she was missing yesterday, I was worried sick. Then I found out she was here with you!" Isolde's eyes were full of concern as she looked them over, relieved to see they were okay.
Cecil, recognizing Evelyn, squirmed in Isolde's arms, trying to break free.
Fortunately, Evelyn noticed Cecil's intentions and quickly took him from Isolde.
Isolde chuckled. "Cecil just loves sticking to Evelyn."
Diana watched as Evelyn carried Cecil away, her mind racing with thoughts.
But she quickly collected herself and sincerely thanked Isolde. "Thank you, Isolde, for helping me so much."
