Chapter 34 The Unsettling Decline
Mia didn't really answer them directly. She just made up some excuse about moving out of the mansion. As for the company, Nathan was the one running it, and Mia was a bit out of the loop regarding what was actually happening.
And recently, Nathan had just cut ties with his old partners and was just chilling at home, reading and relaxing like he was already retired.
Back in the day, the Spencer Group was a big deal in Evergreen City's business scene.
But then they ended up with someone as useless as Nathan. He not only blew through Bianca's family money but also moved his side chick, Mia, into the house.
So, the Spencer Group started going downhill, and a lot of people in their circle looked down on Nathan. But because of the Percy Group, no one dared to say much.
Now, everyone was just waiting for the Spencer Group to go bankrupt so they could finally laugh at their downfall.
Mia never saw the twist coming. Hearing Clara's laughter on the phone, she felt totally at ease.
Mia thought, 'Bianca, so what if you come from a better family? Your husband is mine now, and even your daughter is helping my daughter out.'
Clara's voice came through the phone, "Mom, Charles is awesome. I just mentioned wanting dad to go back and manage the company. But Diana disagreed, so Mr. Percy let me take over the Spencer Group. Once I settle in, I'll bring dad back too!"
"That's amazing!" Mia nodded eagerly but still reminded her, "Clara, you need to keep your cool around Mr. Percy. Men like women who are considerate, especially someone as dominant as Charles. If you act like Diana, it won't end well, got it?"
Clara bit her lip, her face a bit flushed. "Got it, mom. You tell dad the news, I'll get back to work."
After a few more words, they hung up. Mia, still feeling excited, clutched her phone to her chest and went to find Nathan in the study. "Honey! Great news!"
Nathan was reading and looked up, seeing her so happy. "What's up?"
Mia said, "Our company isn't going bankrupt! And now Clara is managing it for the Percy Group!"
Nathan was happy too, but he pondered Charles's character, wondering why he had suddenly let the Spencer Family off the hook.
So he put down his book and asked, "Charles is a businessman. It's easy for him to take down the Spencer Group. Why did he suddenly back off?"
Mia thought for a moment and replied, "Clara said Diana negotiated with Charles and gave him a gem. Charles then relented. Not only does the Spencer Group not have to repay the money, but he even invested to keep it running."
Nathan remembered how generous the Percy Group was when they invested in the Spencer Group and started thinking about going back to work.
Mia knew what he was thinking, going up to massage his shoulders, her voice extra sweet. "Honey, I know what you're thinking. But now Mr. Percy has promoted Clara to manage the company. Once she kicks Diana out, you can rightfully go back. After all, we are family."
Nathan, smelling Mia's perfume, thought of Diana. After a moment of silence, he said, "Yeah, we are family. Tell Clara to keep Charles happy. As long as he's happy, we can have whatever we want."
Mia and Nathan exchanged smiles, dreaming about the wealth and glory they'd have once Clara married into the Percy Family.
At the Spencer Villa, Diana was chilling with a face mask on, one that Evelyn had whipped up for her because she'd been burning the midnight oil and looked pretty worn out.
Robert was double-checking the contract, making sure everything was spot on. Finally, he felt a wave of relief. "Awesome, we saved your mom's hard work, and we're not gonna end up homeless."
Diana, enjoying Evelyn's massage, smirked, "Of course, I've been busting my butt for days. Finally, it's paying off. I told you I wouldn't let you suffer with me."
Evelyn looked at her with admiration. "Ms. Spencer, you're incredible! So, are you the general manager now?"
"This is just the beginning. That jerk Charles even put Clara in to mess with me. She better stay out of my way." Diana clenched her fist and shook it for emphasis.
Robert suddenly had a thought and reminded her, "Since you're getting into the Spencer Group, maybe you can dig up some dirt on Nathan embezzling funds."
Diana blinked; she hadn't forgotten about that. So, she didn't plan to join as the general manager right away but decided to start as an intern.
The Spencer Group had been around for years and had a solid foundation. Nathan couldn't ruin it overnight. Even if he tried, the old employees wouldn't just sit back and watch. But the Spencer Group's quiet decline suggested something fishy was going on.
Diana thought about how Robert had been helping her lately and wondered how his law office was doing. So she asked, "Robert, how's your law office doing these days?"
Robert didn't expect her to ask but answered honestly, "The law office is the same as always, not many cases. But it's okay, I've got enough savings to get by."
Diana raised an eyebrow. "That's not cool. How about coming to the Spencer Group as a legal advisor? I'll pay you double."
Robert couldn't help but laugh and called her out. "Ms. Spencer, you don't have any income right now. I'll think about it when the Spencer Group gets back on its feet."
Diana, feeling a bit embarrassed, was still confident she could turn the Spencer Group around.
Evelyn, seeing Robert got the opportunity, looked at Diana eagerly. "Ms. Spencer, what about me? Is there anything I can do?"
Diana raised her hand and pinched her cheek. "You just keep taking care of me. I'll give you a bonus at the end of the year."
Evelyn nodded quickly, her admiration for Diana growing even more. 'Following Diana is promising; I do less work than before but earn more money. If it were Mia, I would have been kicked out long ago,' Evelyn thought to herself.
Compared to their relaxed vibe, things weren't going so well for Nolan. After Diana left, Charles did nothing but stare at the gem. After two hours, he finally asked Nolan to take him to the Percy Family cemetery.
Nolan knew Charles was thinking of Juniper, so he didn't dare delay and took him to the destination. But when Charles visited Juniper, Nolan stayed far away. He didn't want to see anything he wasn't supposed to, like Charles shedding tears. So after dropping Charles off, he didn't go in but chose to wait obediently in the car.
Charles was unusually downcast today, looking completely dejected. He stood in front of Juniper's grave, staring at her kind and gentle face.
