Chapter 158 Prenatal Checkup
Nolan picked up on her icy tone and quickly cleared his throat. "We're almost there. Has Ms. Spencer started the check-up?"
"It's almost done. The ultrasound is next. Hurry up. I told you not to be late for the prenatal check-up today." Brenda's voice was dripping with reproach.
She had clearly mentioned this two days ago, but Charles, the father of the child, didn't seem to care at all.
Nolan glanced at Charles's cold expression, and sweat started to bead on his forehead.
After hanging up the phone, he respectfully said, "Mr. Percy, we're almost at the hospital. Dr. Ramos said she would try to delay Ms. Spencer's ultrasound."
Charles crossed his legs, leaned back in his seat, and stared out the window, lost in thought.
But Nolan could clearly sense his displeasure.
After all, it wasn't entirely his fault.
Today's activities had been postponed, but a partner had suddenly returned from abroad and wanted to meet with Charles.
Since such opportunities were rare, Nolan had no choice but to arrange a meeting.
But Charles was almost entirely absent-minded during the meeting, clearly thinking about Diana.
A meeting that was supposed to last two hours was compressed into forty minutes.
They had barely finished before getting into the car, but the distance from the Percy Group to Grace General Hospital was long, and there was traffic. That was why they were running late.
Brenda hung up the phone and headed to the ultrasound room.
She was supposed to personally perform Diana's ultrasound today, but with Charles still nowhere in sight, she had to let other pregnant women go first.
So when Diana returned from her glucose tolerance test, she saw several pregnant women sitting outside the ultrasound room.
Their bellies varied in size, indicating different stages of pregnancy.
Most of the women there for prenatal check-ups were accompanied by their husbands.
But Diana, a young and beautiful pregnant woman, was only accompanied by a young girl, which inevitably led to speculation.
"Honey, she's so young and already pregnant. And there's no man with her. Could she be unmarried and pregnant?" The pregnant woman opposite Diana, Ursa, whispered to her husband, Otto.
But when Otto didn't respond for a while, she looked up to find him staring at Diana.
She immediately got angry and pinched Otto's arm hard. "What's wrong with you? I'm talking to you!"
Otto snapped back to reality and saw Ursa's angry face. He quickly asked, "What happened?"
"You!" She was about to speak when she noticed Diana looking at them coldly.
She felt a bit intimidated but, for the sake of her pride, still whispered, "Why were you staring at her? She might be unmarried and pregnant, carrying some old man's child."
Otto finally realized Ursa was talking about Diana.
Even though it was baseless speculation, looking at Diana's cold and distant face, he felt a surge of malice.
He thought with a touch of sarcasm, 'Yeah, such a pretty woman might have a chaotic private life.'
"You're right, honey. Let's not look at her." He gently coaxed Ursa.
Little did they know, Diana and Evelyn had heard their conversation clearly.
Evelyn gritted her teeth. "Ms. Spencer, how can they say that? I want them to apologize to you!"
With that, she was about to stand up and confront them.
But the next second, Diana grabbed her hand and pulled her back to her seat. "Don't be hasty. I'll handle this."
Evelyn looked worried but saw Diana tidying her hair and speaking gently, "How many months are you pregnant? You look further along than me."
The couple didn't expect Diana to suddenly speak to them and felt a bit guilty, wondering if she had heard their conversation.
Otto cleared his throat and replied, "Twenty weeks."
Seeing him respond, Diana smiled faintly. She was in the early stages of pregnancy, a time when the typical symptoms hadn't yet set in. Her demeanor remained serene and gentle, giving no outward signs of her condition. If it weren't for the hospital gown, no one would guess she was expecting.
Her smile captivated Otto again.
"I'm so envious that your husband can accompany you for the check-up. Unlike me..." Diana didn't finish her sentence and just lowered her head with a hint of sadness.
Evelyn didn't understand the situation but still patted Diana's back, her gesture a silent attempt to provide comfort.
Otto, seeing her like this, immediately asked, "What happened? Your husband didn't come with you?"
Diana slowly raised her head, tears in her eyes, holding a tissue she didn't know when she had taken out. She looked pitiful.
"My husband passed away," Diana said, her voice barely above a whisper. "So my younger sister has to accompany me for the check-up."
Hearing this, Otto felt a surge of sympathy. He hadn't realized she was a widow. The weight of her loss suddenly made her vulnerability more understandable. He wondered if there was anything he could do to help her.
But the next second, he cried out in pain from the pinch on his arm.
Ursa was glaring at him. "What do you mean? You're swayed by her words so easily?"
Then she spat at Diana, "You bitch, serves you right that your husband died. You even try to seduce other people's men. Shameless!"
Diana flinched at her words, then looked at Otto with tear-filled eyes. "Sorry, I just wanted to chat, nothing else."
Seeing her cry, Otto's heart ached, forgetting that Ursa was still angry.
"Don't cry. How about I accompany you for the check-up later?" he offered gently.
Ursa couldn't take it anymore and stood up, rushing to Diana and raising her hand to slap her.
At that critical moment, a figure stepped in front of Diana. She looked up and saw the back of Charles's head. His voice was low and cold as he demanded, "Who gave you the right to touch her?"
Ursa was momentarily stunned by Charles's face, but the pain in her wrist snapped her back to reality. "Who are you? Let go! I'm a pregnant woman. Can you afford to hurt me?" She struggled to free herself and tried to grab Diana again.
But Nolan blocked her. "Ma'am, if you continue to cause trouble here, don't blame me for being rude!"
Otto, seeing the situation, quickly stood in front of her, but his voice lacked confidence. "Don't touch my wife!"
"That's my line." Charles coldly replied, shocking them.
"What?" Ursa exclaimed, her eyes wide with disbelief. "She's your wife?"
Nolan pinched himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Then he turned to look at Diana.
Diana's expression was hard to describe, looking a bit speechless.
But Ursa quickly reacted, stubbornly pointing at Diana. "She said her husband died. Who are you to be her husband?"
Nolan gasped. They had rushed to the ultrasound room after getting out of the car, only to find Diana being harassed.
But what was going on now? What had Diana said to this couple?
Charles's face visibly darkened. He turned and pulled Diana up, walking away quickly, leaving only one final, chilling command, "I don't want to see them here."
