Chapter 157 Prenatal Checkup
Claire's eyes flickered, then she rested her chin on one hand, her voice soft, "What's up?"
"I need to see Mr. Percy. Please, take me to him." Clara suddenly grabbed Claire's hand like it was her last hope.
She was really at the end of her rope. Lately, she'd been juggling Nathan's legal issues and managing the Spencer Group's business.
Clara had called Nolan, but he just parroted Charles's orders—"No permission, no return to the Percy Group."
All the rejections had left her desperate.
The kind and bright Claire in front of her seemed like she could help, and Clara couldn't let this chance slip by.
Claire took Clara's hand and gave it a couple of light pats.
"That's easy, I can set it up for you. But..." Her voice trailed off, teasing Clara's nerves.
"But what? What do you want? I'll do anything!" Clara blurted out, but then, remembering her situation, she softened her tone, "As long as it's something I can do, I'll agree."
Seeing Clara take the bait, Claire's eyes sparkled, her smile still gentle, "I don't want anything. You know Mr. Percy, he hates small talk. So you need to pick the right moment to approach him."
"The right moment..." Clara mumbled, her eyes distant, lost in thought.
"I heard you are now the manager of the Spencer Group. You should be powerful, so why are you in such a mess today?"
Claire took a sip of her coffee, her voice dripping with sympathy.
Clara snapped back, her eyes burning with hatred.
It was all Diana's fault!
If it weren't for her, Nathan wouldn't be in jail, and she'd be running the Spencer Group solo!
Thinking of this, Clara looked up, locking eyes with Claire, and said earnestly, "Help me, Ms. Murphy, someone is out to get me. Only Mr. Percy can save me now."
"Ms. Williams, you need proof to make a case. Don't you think?" Claire lowered her eyes, smiling as she sipped her coffee.
She'd said enough; whether Clara got it was up to her.
Luckily, Clara didn't disappoint. Her eyes lit up.
She suddenly stood, her voice bursting with excitement. "Yes! I need evidence! Thank you, Ms. Murphy, I have to go now."
She was about to leave but Claire stopped her, "Ms. Williams, hold on. I don't have your contact info yet."
Clara realized this and quickly exchanged numbers with Claire.
Holding her phone, a smile finally broke on her face. She'd been exhausted these past few days.
Now, with a glimmer of hope, she looked radiant.
Following Claire's hint, Clara remembered that Charles despised Diana.
She didn't know Diana's current situation, but if she gathered more dirt on Diana targeting the Williams family, Charles would definitely back her up!
Grace General Hospital.
Even though Diana and Evelyn could leave, they stayed put in the hospital all day, just to make sure tomorrow's prenatal checkup went off without a hitch.
Brenda, the dedicated doctor, was super concerned about Diana's condition. She spent almost the entire day hovering around Diana, only relaxing a bit when she saw Diana wasn't fazed by Charles.
After all, Diana and Charles were set to meet tomorrow, and if they clashed, Brenda didn't even want to think about the chaos that would ensue.
"Dr. Ramos, go do your thing. Evelyn can stay with me," Diana said, flipping through a parenting book Evelyn had given her, looking totally unbothered.
Brenda had been in the room for almost four hours, and just the surveillance from the TV monitor was enough to annoy Diana. Now with Brenda acting like a human monitor, Diana was itching to get rid of her.
Brenda shifted around but eventually stood up. "Alright, I'll go. Call me if you need anything."
Diana nodded without looking up.
Just as Brenda reached the door, she remembered something and turned back. "Don't forget to fast for the prenatal checkup tomorrow, Ms. Spencer. There will be a blood draw."
"Got it, Dr. Ramos. I'll take good care of Ms. Spencer," Evelyn replied.
After Brenda left, Diana tossed the book aside and lay back on the bed.
Seeing her quiet, Evelyn spoke up, "Ms. Spencer, are you excited about the prenatal checkup tomorrow?"
Diana looked at her seriously, "A little. It's my first child, after all. You should come with me tomorrow. Haven't you always wanted to hear the baby's heartbeat?"
Evelyn nodded, looking even more excited than Diana.
This was Diana's baby, and she couldn't help but wonder if it was a boy or a girl.
The next day, during the prenatal check-up, Diana's special status meant that she was given priority for all the procedures.
But Diana got up late and didn't like special treatment, so she turned down Brenda's offer.
With Evelyn, she waited in line at the gynecology department.
She wore a light purple hospital gown, and the nutritional meals and treatment she'd been getting had really done wonders for her. Diana now looked very healthy, her complexion glowing.
She had just done the glucose tolerance test and drank a cup of glucose water, which left her throat feeling pretty uncomfortable. But for the sake of the test's accuracy, she couldn't drink water yet.
"Ms. Spencer, please extend your hand, I need to take some blood."
The nurse in front of her wore a mask, but her eyes were warm and kind.
Diana extended her hand, and the nurse quickly pricked her finger with a blood collection needle. As soon as the blood bead appeared, she applied it to the test paper.
The whole process was quick, but the pain in the fingertip was sharper than in other parts of the body. Evelyn, standing beside her, frowned and tightly held Diana's other hand.
In contrast, Diana remained expressionless, as if it wasn't her being pricked. She even had the presence of mind to comfort Evelyn.
While Diana and Evelyn were busy with the prenatal checkup, Brenda wasn't just sitting around either. She clutched her phone, calling Nolan five times, all unanswered.
"Didn't I tell them that Ms. Spencer has a prenatal check-up today? The check-up is almost over, where are they?" Brenda muttered, debating whether to call Charles directly when her phone suddenly rang.
It was Nolan.
"Mr. Nolan, have you arrived? It's so late already."
Her voice was loud enough for Charles, sitting next to Nolan, to hear clearly.
