Chapter 83 Comprehensive Suppression
Charles woke up with a rare hangover and decided to skip work. He hadn't eaten all day, and his stomach felt like it was being twisted into knots.
Seeing how miserable he looked, the butler, Jacob Hearst, had someone whip up some soup. "Mr. Percy, you really should eat something. Ignoring your stomach issues isn't a good idea."
Jacob called out from the doorway, holding the soup. Charles frowned, clutching his stomach, and said in a low voice, "Come in."
"Mr. Percy, you took medicine yesterday, and your stomach's still empty today. Some hot soup will do you good." Jacob placed the soup nearby and stood by, waiting for Charles's instructions.
"Why does it look different from before?" Charles asked, stirring the soup with a spoon. Whenever he came home late from social events, there was always a bowl of soup waiting for him. It was always fragrant and soothing for his stomach.
Jacob thought for a moment and answered honestly, "Mr. Percy, the previous soups were made by Ms. Spencer. She knew about your stomach issues, so she made soup every day. If you happened to come home, you could have some."
Charles paused, 'Diana made it?' Just thinking about her made him angry. He snorted, "If she made it, she would definitely tell me over and over again."
"It was indeed Ms. Spencer who made it. She was afraid that if you knew, you wouldn't drink it, so she never said anything. Does this soup not suit your taste? I can have someone make a new one." Jacob was always honest, and with Diana gone, he had no reason to speak well of her.
But Diana was with Billy last night. Hearing about what she did before the divorce made his feelings even more conflicted. Charles gripped the spoon handle tightly but managed to hold back his anger. "No need, I'll eat it. From now on, don't mention Diana at home."
"Yes, sir." Jacob nodded and respectfully left the room.
After the door closed, Charles took a sip with slight disdain; it wasn't good. But his stomach was growling, so he closed his eyes and drank the small bowl of soup in one go.
Charles took out his phone and called Nolan. Since Charles wasn't at the office today, Nolan was naturally on high alert. He answered almost immediately, "Hello, Mr. Percy, is there something you need me to do?"
Charles said, "Look into the relationship between Diana and Billy."
Nolan was a bit puzzled. 'What's up with those two?'
Last night, Charles had already instructed him to halt investments in the Spencer Group and collaborations with the Richardson Group. Nolan had wanted to ask indirectly, but the atmosphere in the car was so tense, with Charles's cold expression, that it felt like the air was freezing.
So now Nolan wisely kept his mouth shut and didn't ask anything. "Yes, Mr. Percy, I'll get on it right away."
Diana was easy to investigate, but Billy's identity was special. The Richardson Family had done an excellent job of keeping Billy's information confidential, so it would take some time to find anything. But since Charles wanted it, Nolan had no choice but to agree.
"Also, tell Clara not to come to the office unless it's something special." Charles recalled Clara's behavior last night. They said people spoke the truth when drunk, and such a woman couldn't be kept around.
"Yes, Mr. Percy. With Clara's position vacant, do we need to hire a new secretary?" Nolan appropriately raised the question.
Initially, Clara was kept around to avoid the hassle of finding a new companion for every social event. Now that Clara was out of the picture, the position was vacant, meaning people would start trying to set him up with various women at social gatherings.
The only one left was Abigail. She was young and beautiful but didn't have the high-society social skills. She mostly helped Nolan with work and wasn't someone suitable for these events.
'Would Charles have to bring a male companion in the future?' The thought gave Nolan goosebumps.
Charles hadn't thought that far ahead. "We'll deal with that later. For now, figure out Diana's situation. I need to know today." Without waiting for Nolan's response, he hung up.
Nolan looked at the disconnected phone, a rare wry smile appearing on his usually stern face. It was almost afternoon, giving him less than half a day to investigate.
Fortunately, after much effort, he finally had results by 1 a.m. Afraid of disturbing Charles if he was asleep, Nolan sent a message instead. If Charles didn't respond, he would tell him the next day. But ten seconds later, Charles called back. His voice was emotionless, "Speak."
Nolan opened the information he had gathered and began to analyze it for Charles. "Mr. Percy, they had contact about ten days ago. Ms. Spencer was promoting the company, and Billy sent her $800,000 worth of gifts in a live stream, which trended online."
"I know about that. Get to the point!" Charles snapped.
Cold sweat broke out on Nolan's forehead. "Yes, sir. On the 12th, they had dinner together at Spice Haven Bistro. Isolde was also there, but Billy left first. I'm still tracking his exact whereabouts."
Hearing no response from the other end, Nolan continued, "Then last night, the manager of Mirage Nights Club saw Ms. Spencer and Billy leave together in a car."
Nolan paused for a moment, guessing that this was why Charles was upset last night. "The most recent instance was tonight at 8 p.m. Billy left the Spencer Villa, and our people saw Ms. Spencer seeing him off. Judging by the direction, he was heading home."
The other end of the line remained silent. Charles almost crushed his phone. He hadn't slept all night, waiting for Nolan's update. He had thought the "boyfriend" comment was a joke, but Diana actually dared.
They had only been divorced for a few months, and she was already eager to date another man. Charles even suspected that they might have been together before the divorce.
Nolan cautiously spoke up, "Mr. Percy? Are you listening? I'm sorry, time was tight, and this is all I could find."
Charles swallowed, suppressing his anger, and said in a deep voice, "I heard you clearly. Nolan, from now on, stop all support for the Spencer Group. I don't want to see her make any money."
"Yes, sir. As you said last night, all collaborations with the Richardson Group have also been halted."
"Keep investigating them! Report any updates to me immediately." Charles demanded.
"Yes, sir." Nolan answered respectfully.
The next second, there was a commotion on the other end, followed by the sound of glass breaking. Nolan wanted to ask, but Charles had already hung up.
