Chapter 59 Misunderstanding
Diana lay sprawled on the ground, dirt filling her mouth. The grass poked at her face, making it sting and itch, but she didn't care enough to move. She was exhausted.
Two lifetimes, countless tricky tasks, and dealing with difficult people—none of it compared to the headache that was Charles. If the world ended, Charles would survive just by being a jerk.
Charles laughed when he heard her. "Diana, you think your life is that important? Killing you would just dirty my hands. You got cozy with another guy right in front of me, and you think you're in the right?"
"Didn't you bring me here just to get rid of me? Why do you care who I'm with? At least Billy wouldn't throw me into the water," Diana shot back, her voice weak.
Charles's eyes narrowed. So that guy earlier was Billy, the Richardson heir. He'd acted on impulse, but Charles wasn't worried. The head of the Richardson Group was stepping down, and without his protection, the group was going downhill.
In the business world, Charles was the real deal. The Richardson Group's future still depended on his goodwill. But Diana's first comment threw him off. 'When did I ever say I was going to give her away?' he thought to himself.
"Diana, what are you talking about? When did I say I was giving you away? Just because you're pretty?" Charles asked.
Diana replied, "Yeah, am I not pretty? You handed me over to Mr. Moore before, and he liked me. Now Billy likes me too."
Charles didn't want to admit it, but Diana was stunning, almost too much so, which made him uneasy. But that wasn't the point. He brought her to Harmony Haven Estate to broaden her horizons.
Charles squatted down and grabbed Diana's chin. "Who told you I was giving you away?"
Diana turned her head, avoiding his hand. "You know it yourself. Last time you broke into my house, tied me up, and took me to a party. This time you tied me up and brought me here. Charles! I'm a person, not your toy!" She slowly stood up, dragging her wet dress as she walked away.
The passing servants gasped. All the guests today were VIPs, so they quickly took Diana to change clothes.
Diana had planned to walk out just like that, but the estate's attentive service surprised her, so she followed them.
Charles was left alone, deep in thought. 'Tied up? No wonder Diana was so unwilling from the start.'
He had entrusted this task to Nolan, and it shouldn't have gone wrong. But Diana didn't seem to be lying. Charles took out his phone and called Nolan.
Nolan was slacking off and was startled by the sudden call. "Hello, Mr. Percy, what's up?"
Charles asked, "How did you bring Diana over?"
Nolan was dumbfounded. "Just, just brought her over."
"Like last time?"
"Yes, this time Ms. Spencer was very cooperative."
"You didn't tell her why she was coming?"
"No, Mr. Percy, your schedule is completely confidential," Nolan answered truthfully, and Charles responded with a long silence.
Nolan cautiously asked, "What's wrong, Mr. Percy?"
The next second, Charles hung up. Nolan was puzzled, but less than 20 minutes later, Abigail called.
Nolan was confused. 'Why is everyone calling me today? Is something happening at the company?'
Nolan answered, "Hello, Abigail, what's up?"
Abigail's voice was cautious. "Nolan, did you upset Mr. Percy?"
"No, he seemed quite happy."
Abigail said, "Then why did Mr. Percy just tell me the company has a new business in Phoenixia and that you're the lucky one to go represent us?"
Nolan shot up from his seat, thinking, 'What business? How come I, the special assistant, don't know about it?'
He asked, "What business in Phoenixia?"
"Digging potatoes, Mr. Percy asked me to book you a flight for tomorrow afternoon, Nolan. Better start packing," replied Abigail.
Nolan's heart sank. He'd only slacked off for 20 minutes; that couldn't be severe enough to get shipped off to Phoenixia! But then he remembered Charles's call and realized something was off. Anything that made Charles ask questions was serious.
Nolan's mind raced. Last time, Charles had asked him to invite Diana, but he'd tied her up and brought her over instead. This time, Charles had genuinely asked Nolan to invite her politely, but Nolan, not noticing the difference, had tied Diana up again.
Nolan scratched his head in frustration. No wonder Charles was so mad. That call wasn't just a casual question; it was the calm before the storm. Nolan immediately called Charles, but there was no answer, so he had to start looking for him.
In the estate's reception room, Charles sat across from Vance Richardson, the head of the Richardson Group.
Next to Vance was Billy, who had changed clothes but still had damp hair and was glaring at Charles with hostility. Charles glared back without hesitation.
Vance smiled kindly. "Mr. Percy, this is my son Billy. I heard there was a bit of a conflict between you two earlier. It must have been a misunderstanding. He's been abroad for a long time and is a bit unruly. I apologize for any offense."
Vance pressed down on Billy's head and said sternly, "Apologize to Mr. Percy!"
Charles knew they weren't sincere, especially Billy, whose neck was stiff as a steel rod, refusing to bow.
Vance, with his rich political experience, knew how to read the situation. If they didn't bow now and angered Charles, he would make life difficult for the Richardson Family. So even though Billy had been beaten and fallen into the water, Vance couldn't get angry. There were too many important guests today.
The more people there were, the more the Richardson Family had to lower their stance and elevate Charles. Only then could they force Charles to accept their apology and resolve the matter.
Charles understood their intentions but went along with it anyway. "Mr. Vance Richardson, you're too kind. I was impulsive before. I didn't know this was Mr. Billy Richardson, which led to the conflict. Now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, there's no need to talk about apologies. It's not a big deal."
Charles's words were gracious, but in his heart, he was thinking about how to punch Billy a few more times. But for now, with the Percy Family's issues unresolved, Charles didn't want to waste time on the Richardson Group.
Since everything was clear, everyone naturally became harmonious again.
Charles thought of the departing Diana and didn't want to stay any longer. After a few words, he found an excuse to leave. As soon as he left, Vance slapped Billy hard. Being a military man, his strength was immense. With a loud thud, Billy could only grit his teeth and endure it.
Billy shouted angrily, "You idiot! I went to great lengths to organize this event just so you could meet Charles. And what did you do? You fought him over a woman."
"Diana isn't his woman. Why should he bully her?" Billy retorted, making Vance even angrier.
Seeing Billy's stubbornness, Vance shouted, "Someone! Bring the whip!"
Billy didn't run. He knelt on the ground, gritting his teeth and letting Vance whip him. Even if time could be reversed, he wouldn't regret what he did today.
