Chapter 156 At the End of One's Rope
Diana seemed to read her mind and looked up, saying, "Wondering how I knew you were lying?"
Brenda nodded, raising a hand. "Mr. Percy didn't apologize, but he did show up last night and left the stuff. I swear."
Diana touched her chin, thinking. "Showing up in the middle of the night, I can't think of any reason other than an assassination attempt."
Saying that, Diana got goosebumps. He had entered the room last night, and she hadn't noticed.
If Charles had wanted to strangle her, she would be dead.
Brenda waved her hand with a smile. "Oh, come on, Ms. Spencer, you're hilarious. Mr. Percy has a bad temper, but he's not extreme enough to kill you, especially since you're carrying his child."
Diana was silent for a moment; Brenda didn't know how many times she had almost been strangled by him.
Even last night, she dreamed that Charles had imprisoned her. He would occasionally strangle her neck to vent his anger.
Diana suddenly remembered the main point and asked, "Am I not allowed to go out now? Can my friends come to see me?"
Brenda turned her head and said, "What do you mean? You can go out. I checked your health indicators yesterday, and they're all good."
"Didn't Mr. Percy give an order that we can't leave the hospital?" Evelyn, who was tidying up the bed, stood up and asked.
She was anxious last night about whether she could go out shopping.
"Of course not, you're free to go. But you still need to take bodyguards when you go out." Brenda was puzzled by Diana and Evelyn's questions.
It was clearly Charles's fault yesterday. How did it turn into a question of whether she could leave the hospital?
Diana was the first to react to the current situation.
Charles didn't impose any kind of confinement yesterday; he really just came to deliver something.
Diana frowned slightly, not understanding why Charles suddenly became all bark and no bite.
But the current situation was in her favor, and Diana felt much happier.
At the Percy Group.
In the lobby on the first floor, Clara was in a standoff with the security and front desk staff.
"Let me in, how dare you stop me! Don't you know who I am?"
Her sharp voice drew frequent glances from many people.
Some recognized her and couldn't help but whisper, "Isn't that Clara? Why is she being stopped downstairs?"
The Williams family was now in a precarious situation, with Nathan being detained. The evidence was conclusive and left Nathan with no escape.
Mia cried every day, and now the only person in the Williams family who could save Nathan was Clara.
But after thinking it over, the only person who could help the Williams family was Charles.
With just one word from him, the Williams family could be resurrected.
So Clara forgot Charles's previous words, dressed herself up to look youthful and beautiful, and came to the Percy Group's building.
The front desk staff and security already knew that her position as a secretary was nominal, so they asked her for an appointment.
Clara couldn't provide one, so she tried to force her way in.
After a commotion, the front desk staff were also annoyed.
One of the front desk staff's expressions turned disgusted, and she lowered her voice, "Enough, Clara. We're calling you Ms. Williams out of respect. Do you really think you're still Mr. Percy's person? Mr. Percy already said you're not allowed back in the company. Why are you here? Isn't it good to be a manager at the Spencer Group?"
Another front desk staff member echoed, "Exactly, Ms. Williams, you're not doing badly now. Your position is much better than a secretary's. Why come back and pester us?"
Clara's hands were restrained by the security guards. She gritted her teeth, her face twisted with rage.
"You lowly, rude, disgusting people! Just wait, I'll have Mr. Percy fire all of you!"
The front desk staff's expressions turned sour, and they couldn't be bothered to humor her anymore.
They said to the security guards, "Alright, throw her out. Since she said that, we don't need to respect her anymore."
The two security guards nodded, lifted Clara from both sides, and tossed her out in front of everyone.
Clara hit the ground hard, scraping her elbow and tearing a hole in her bodycon skirt.
Her eyes filled with tears. Enduring the pain, she propped herself up. It was the first time in her life she had been so humiliated.
Suddenly, a pair of champagne-colored high heels stopped in front of her.
Clara slowly looked up, following the shoes upward.
The woman was wearing a pink and white long dress with a beige knitted cardigan over it.
Her hair was slightly curled and draped over her back.
But she was standing against the light, and Clara squinted, unable to see her face clearly.
"Hey, are you okay?" The woman's voice was gentle, and she extended a slender hand to Clara.
Clara was a bit stunned, but when people were vulnerable, they couldn't help but gravitate towards kindness.
So she placed her hand in the woman's palm and stood up with her help.
"Hi, my name is Claire. What's your name? I saw you being stopped at the front desk earlier. Are you trying to go upstairs to see someone?"
Claire had a warm and kind face, the epitome of a gentle beauty, looking soft and warm.
Clara was influenced by her demeanor and couldn't help but open up about her troubles.
"My name is Clara. I used to be the personal secretary to the president of the Percy Group. Later, I was transferred to another company, and now I can't even come back to see Mr. Percy."
Claire listened to her without changing her expression, but a sense of disdain rose in her heart.
So this was the former colleague Abigail mentioned, who was just good-looking but incompetent.
Claire had been getting along well with Abigail and some people at the Percy Group these days.
She had a clear understanding of Charles' situation.
The Clara in front of her, saying she couldn't come back to see Charles, was no longer part of the Percy Group, pretending to be a loyal employee.
But Claire kept these thoughts to herself and pretended to be surprised, saying, "What? So you were the employee before me?"
Clara looked a bit confused, not understanding what Claire meant.
Seeing her foolish expression, Claire frowned slightly without showing it and led Clara to a nearby café, ordering a coffee for her as well.
Claire sat down with Clara, her tone gentle.
"Now we can talk slowly. What I mean is, I am now Mr. Percy's secretary, taking over your job."
"What? How could you?"
Clara was initially just a bit sad, but upon hearing this, her expression immediately turned sharp.
She had worked hard, leveraging her connection with Diana, to become the secretary at the Percy Group.
But now, this stranger was telling her that her job had been taken over?
Clara couldn't accept this, especially since the woman in front of her was particularly beautiful, making her feel even more threatened.
How could she ask Charles for help now?
Claire pressed her shoulder, her expression calm. "Don't be anxious, listen to me."
Seeing Clara sit down, Claire continued, "My name is Claire Murphy. I was Charles's college classmate. My father was his teacher, so objectively speaking, I got the job through internal connections. Charles arranged my work; I didn't know it was your job before."
She didn't just spill the beans to Clara about her thing with Charles, she also dumped the job replacement issue on him.
Now, Clara had two options.
She could either go head-to-head with Claire, but that'd just leave her fuming and helpless, or she could buddy up with Claire and use her connections to save the Williams family.
Clara's face was tight, her expression all over the place. Her hands were balled into fists, nails digging into her palms, the pain snapping her back to reality.
"Can you help me?" Clara looked up, her eyes practically begging. This was the first time she'd ever asked a stranger for help.
