Chapter 533 Promise
Diana had never seen Charles so vulnerable before. She stood there, stiff and unsure of what to do.
They remained in a standoff for a long time without any reaction from her. Finally, Charles broke the silence.
"Can you just hug me?"
He wasn't sure if this would evoke sympathy from Diana, but it had to be better than his usual cold demeanor.
Eugene had told him that if he wanted Diana to stop hating him, he needed to become a completely different person—a perfect gentleman.
He didn't know how to be a perfect gentleman, but when Diana's hand gently patted his back, he realized the plan was working.
From an unnoticed angle, Charles allowed a small smile to form, though his voice still carried a sob as he held her tighter.
"I'm sorry. It's all my fault."
He murmured softly, his head nuzzling against Diana's shoulder like a large, needy dog.
After a while, Diana pulled him away and pushed him back onto the bed, her tone awkward.
"Alright, stop crying. Anyone who doesn't know better would think I did something terrible to you."
Charles' eyes were red, and he still looked pitiful.
"It doesn't matter if you don't forgive me. I'll work hard to change."
Diana poured him a glass of water, not taking his words seriously, and responded dismissively,
"I get it. You're not thinking clearly right now. Don't overthink it."
"I'm very clear-headed. I know what I'm saying."
Charles didn't take the glass of water but interrupted her instead,
"I'm serious. Please believe me this time, okay? Don't leave."
Charles looked up at her, his eyes pure and sincere, not at all like the head of a business empire.
"The doctor said I have amnesia and don't remember many things. But I know you're important to me. I'm... I'm scared to be alone."
Diana's chest tightened. She had never seen this side of Charles—vulnerable, honest, and unguarded.
This was a far cry from the Charles who had once imprisoned her.
"I won't leave," she heard herself say. "At least not until you recover."
Charles' eyes lit up like a child receiving candy.
"But..."
Diana paused, setting the glass aside, her expression turning serious,
"Can you promise that once you're healthy and can take over the company, you'll let me go?"
As expected, Charles fell silent, his lips pressed together.
Seeing his reaction, Diana understood. She smiled, her voice carrying a hint of coldness,
"Even if you don't agree, I'll still leave. Take care of yourself."
With that, she didn't wait for Charles to respond and stood up to leave.
However, as her hand touched the doorknob, Charles' voice came from behind,
"I promise!"
Afraid she might leave, he quickly added,
"I promise you, once I'm better, I'll let you go. I won't control you anymore."
Diana paused, turning back with a raised eyebrow,
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Alright, I'll have the divorce papers prepared. Once we sign them, I'll believe you."
Diana watched his expression closely, observing any subtle changes.
To her surprise, Charles only lowered his eyelashes before making up his mind, "Okay, I agree to everything."
So easily? Diana thought she might have misheard.
The next moment, Charles reached out to her, "But I hope that while I'm still recovering, we can get along."
His eyes were hopeful, yet cautious.
Diana remained silent, and just when he thought she would refuse, she nodded,
"I'll arrange everything."
No matter what Charles was thinking now, Diana chose to believe his promise.
When Nolan brought the divorce papers, his face was grim, constantly hinting at Charles not to sign.
They had just gotten married, and now they were suddenly getting divorced?
But Charles ignored the subtle hints from Nolan, signed the papers, and handed them to Diana.
For now, she still had to manage the company, so they couldn't actually divorce. But as long as Charles signed, she could finalize it whenever she wanted.
With this matter settled, the weight on Diana's chest lifted. The chains of love that had bound her were finally broken, and she found herself looking at Charles with a bit more tolerance.
Three months later, Charles was discharged from the hospital.
His external injuries had mostly healed, but he still walked with a limp and needed a cane.
On the day he returned home, Jacob organized a welcome ceremony.
The servants lined up in two rows, with Benjamin and Snowy standing on either side of Jacob. They became excited as soon as they saw Charles' car approaching.
Jacob, with his graying hair, teared up at the sight of Charles returning. Not wanting to be laughed at, he quickly wiped away his tears.
As soon as Charles got out of the car, everyone gathered around him.
"Mr. Percy, welcome back."
"Mr. Percy, welcome home!"
Snowy barked a few times in excitement.
Benjamin set off a small party popper, and streamers fell onto Charles' head.
Charles pursed his lips, looking somewhat displeased.
This place wasn't unfamiliar to him. He had lived here with his grandmother for over a decade, and the old butler, Jacob, was still the same.
But after waking up, his grandmother was gone, leaving him with an empty house.
Diana removed the streamers from his head and whispered,
"If staying here makes you sad, we can find another place."
The loss of a loved one wasn't something one could accept overnight.
Charles shook his head. He had thought about it many times in the hospital. Once he returned, he would mourn his grandmother. This was his home.
With that in mind, his gaze fell on Benjamin.
The little boy, looking about four or five years old, resembled him when he was younger. He tilted his head, looking at Charles with grape-like eyes, very cute.
"Mr. Percy, do you not remember me either?"
Benjamin had been living at the Percy Mansion for safety reasons and to prevent Jacob from discovering he was missing and going to look for Charles.
Now that Charles had amnesia, everything was easier to explain. Diana had already told him that Benjamin was Zachary's child.
Because of this, Zachary had been behaving himself lately, not causing trouble at work.
Charles spoke slowly,
"I don't remember, but I recall you visiting me in the hospital."
"Yes!"
Benjamin was delighted, grabbing his hand,
"Thank you for saving me. Ms. Spencer said you needed to rest well because there are still many bad people outside, so I could only wait at home for you to come back."
"Benjamin missed you a lot and even prepared a gift for your discharge, Mr. Percy."
Jacob chimed in at the right moment, and they all moved into the living room. Benjamin quickly went to get the gift.
Charles and Benjamin unwrapped the gift together, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
Soon, the sadness on Charles' face faded, replaced by a smile as he chatted with Benjamin.
Benjamin had been cooped up at home for months, only able to go out when Dean was free.
Now that Charles was back and had a different personality, he was naturally happy.
Seeing them having fun, Diana checked the time and said,
"I have to go to the office. You all stay here and don't wander off. Call me if you need anything."
