Chapter 289 A Unique Way
As soon as he left, an awkward silence hung in the air by the gate.
Clara and Tessa exchanged glances for a moment before Tessa finally broke the ice.
"Sorry, ma'am, Mr. Percy isn't letting anyone see Ms. Spencer right now. You're gonna have to leave."
Clara frowned. She had come all this way to find out about Diana's condition.
Even if she couldn't see her, getting some info from someone at The Percy Mansion would be helpful.
She had spent quite a while talking to the security guard, but he was stubborn and kept repeating the same lines, making her grit her teeth in frustration.
However, the woman in front of her seemed like a good entry point.
With that thought, Clara smiled, "You look new here. Did the Percy family just hire you? Where's Jacob? I haven't seen him around."
"Yeah, I'm new. I'm taking care of Ms. Spencer and filling in for Jacob temporarily."
Tessa clenched her fists subtly. Even though Clara didn't look much like Diana, her pampered demeanor was unmistakable.
The relaxed air of the wealthy always made Tessa nervous.
Hearing her response, Clara's eyes lit up.
This woman was close to Diana! She would definitely know more.
Clearing her throat, Clara feigned an apologetic tone.
"You must be really capable. Diana's pregnant now, and her temper must be hard to handle. She's been selfish since she was a child. You must have suffered a lot working for her. I apologize on her behalf."
As Clara spoke, she watched Tessa's expression closely.
She had just pinned a crime on Diana, and Tessa seemed to agree, nodding slightly.
"Ms. Spencer is pregnant. It's my job to take care of her. It's no problem."
Clara was almost certain that Diana had angered this maid, making her vent to a stranger.
With that in mind, Clara smiled and pulled out a wad of large bills from her bag, her tone slightly apologetic.
"Sorry, this is a token of my appreciation. Please accept it. Since I can't see Diana now, please take good care of her and keep me updated on her condition."
Tessa was taken aback by the sudden bribe, "Me?"
Clara raised an eyebrow and slipped the money into Tessa's pocket through the gate crack.
"Of course. Let's exchange contact information. If you take good care of her, there will be more money for you."
She didn't have much cash on her today, but the wad of bills felt substantial in Tessa's pocket.
Tessa was momentarily confused but nodded in agreement.
After they exchanged contact information, Clara said, "This is our little secret. Don't tell anyone, okay?"
"Okay, okay."
Tessa put her phone back in her pocket, her voice a bit shaky.
She definitely couldn't let Charles know. If he found out his maid was working for someone else, she'd be fired on the spot.
As for Diana, she didn't like Tessa and would never be happy about being monitored.
But for now, since she had agreed, Tessa decided to endure it and try to get along with Diana temporarily.
Seeing her goal achieved, Clara didn't linger.
She gently reminded, "Make sure to tell me everything, and take good care of my dear sister."
The Percy Manor.
In the living room, an old-fashioned phonograph played classical music, the melody soft and elegant. Elise was half-lying on the sofa with a face mask on.
Nearby, Ralph handed her a phone, speaking softly, "Ms. Murphy is calling."
Elise frowned slightly, sighing in annoyance.
She took the phone with one hand and removed the face mask with the other, her voice turning sweet and gentle, "What's up, Claire?"
On the other end, Claire's voice carried a hint of barely concealed frustration, "Aunt Elise, I checked. Diana wasn't hurt at all in that explosion. Are your people reliable?"
Hearing her bluntness, Elise's temper flared. She sat up and replied, "Is that my fault? I'm helping you here, so watch your tone."
She paused, admiring her freshly done nails, and continued, "If you don't want to get caught, you need to find out Diana's current situation. We can wait, but her baby can't."
Claire bit her lip, feeling a surge of anger. Elise was just pretending to be a concerned elder.
She was worried that Diana's baby would affect Zachary's position in the Percy family. They were only working together because their goals aligned.
Last time, they had found an opportunity, but the explosion caused a lot of noise without harming Diana at all. Useless!
But now, in Evergreen City, Claire had no choice but to rely on Elise. Suppressing her anger, Claire softened her tone.
"Aunt Elise, that's not what I meant. We need to work together on this. Don't be mad. I'll figure something out."
Elise's attitude softened slightly, "We're family. Who else would I help? You should observe and remember more around Charles. Good men need to be fought for, especially someone like Charles. Many people are eyeing him. Claire, you need to seize the opportunity."
Claire nodded. Elise was right about that. But right now, that perfect man was being monopolized by Diana. She had to get rid of Diana and her unborn child!
After hanging up, Claire sat in the break room, pondering Elise's words.
Now she was indeed close to Charles, but he never discussed personal matters with employees, let alone share any information. What should she do?
"Ms. Murphy? Ms. Murphy?"
Abigail walked in, seeing Claire lost in thought, and interrupted her. "What's up? Why are you daydreaming? Are you too tired today?"
Unlike Nolan's usual aloofness, Abigail was much more natural around Claire. They could joke around and interact like normal colleagues.
But Abigail always remembered that Claire was a rich girl experiencing life. If she didn't have a good experience, there would be trouble.
So seeing Claire daydreaming, she didn't push her to work but showed concern instead.
Claire snapped out of it and smiled, shaking her head, "No, just a bit bored."
Abigail closed her eyes briefly, unable to believe what she had just heard.
If she said that and Nolan heard, she'd get double the workload. The gap between people was truly insurmountable.
Realizing her words might be misunderstood, Claire quickly corrected herself, "I mean, doing the same work all the time. It's numbing my brain, making me feel bored."
Who knows how much Abigail understood, but she nodded and turned to fill a cup of water from the dispenser.
As the water flowed into the cup, Abigail spoke slowly, "Ms. Murphy, I have a way to relieve workplace stress. Want to try it?"
