Chapter 206 Got a Fever
"I won't fall for it; he's pulling the same trick again," Diana said, rolling her eyes, determined not to be fooled again.
Charles coughed, and the kids rushed to help him up, all panicked.
Out of sight, Diana clenched her jaw.
Wasn't he supposed to be out cold? How did he wake up so fast? Why couldn't the snow just bury him already?
"Diana, don't make me repeat myself," his voice was raspy, sounding weak and sickly.
These kids were too small to lift him.
"Fine," Diana replied coolly, but she finally reached out. This time, she grabbed Charles' arm, taking charge.
Maybe he cooperated; she pulled him up with ease.
Charles' tall frame leaned on her shoulder but didn't weigh her down.
As Diana helped him inside, she told the kids to hurry back in.
It was snowing, and it was freezing out.
Snowflakes fell on them, one even landing on Diana's eyelashes.
She shook her head to get rid of the snow, her mind wandering. This seemed like the first snow of the year.
When she was with Dean, he always loved watching soap operas.
He'd say that couples who kissed during the first snow would be together forever.
6.4-foot-tall Dean would get so shy talking about such a cheesy love story that he'd kick his legs, and it was hilarious.
Thinking of this, Diana couldn't help but laugh.
Charles had his eyes closed; his head was pounding. Even his eyes felt hot, making everything blurry.
Like a blind man, he completely relied on Diana to lead the way.
The familiar scent of Diana eased some of his irritation.
Hearing Diana suddenly laugh, Charles was a bit surprised and asked after a moment, "What's so funny?"
Diana's thoughts were interrupted, and she immediately stopped smiling, saying indifferently, "Nothing."
She then thought unhappily. If Dean knew she was with Charles on the first snow, he probably wouldn't believe in that love story anymore.
Noticing her cold tone, Charles' just-calmed emotions flared up again.
Just as he was about to speak, Kennedy and Evelyn's voices came from not far away. Two bodyguards followed closely behind.
It was almost dusk. After making coffee, Kennedy thought of starting dinner early, so she hadn't gone to the backyard to bother them.
Evelyn and the bodyguards were in the storeroom organizing the supermarket deliveries. Willow had gone back to call everyone over.
Kennedy didn't know who Charles was, but Evelyn and the bodyguards did.
Hearing that Charles had fainted, they ran like the wind, leaving Kennedy alone in the kitchen to keep cooking.
Now seeing Charles looking sickly and leaning on Diana, the three were stunned.
The bodyguards quickly stepped forward to help Charles.
Seeing she wasn't needed, Diana was glad to be off the hook.
But Charles hadn't taken more than a few steps before he shook off the bodyguards and started walking on his own.
His steps were steady, and from behind, he didn't look sick at all.
What was with Charles?
Diana gritted her teeth, cursing silently to herself, 'He's clearly faking it to mess with me.'
However, Charles was unaware of Diana's thoughts.
The two bodyguards, though strong, had a sweaty smell, and being flanked on both sides left him no room to breathe, making him feel nauseous.
He simply mustered his strength to shake them off and walked on his own.
Evelyn jogged to Diana's side, walking alongside her and asking softly, "Ms. Spencer, what's going on?"
Diana shrugged, "Nothing much, he's probably just here to cause trouble."
"Why? Didn't we call ahead?" Evelyn pouted, clearly annoyed with Charles.
"Who knows," Diana replied, her tone just as impatient.
When she had called him, a woman had answered the phone. Charles was out fooling around with some woman, and now he wanted to interfere with her at the Rainbow Orphanage?
Once inside, Kennedy came out of the kitchen, wearing an apron. Oblivious to the tension, she smiled and greeted them.
"Hey everyone, I just made some hot soup. Perfect for preventing colds. Want some?"
The bodyguards looked a bit helpless and waved their hands. "Ms. Hope, our boss isn't feeling well and needs to see a doctor. Do you know where the nearest hospital is?"
Hearing this, Kennedy quickly walked over.
Charles was sitting in a chair, looking pale. She reached out to check his temperature but he pulled away.
Diana knew Charles' bad temper was flaring up again, so she said, "Ms. Hope, he has a fever."
"It's just a fever. No need to go to the hospital. I have some fever medicine here. Take one and sleep it off," Kennedy waved her hand, dismissing it as no big deal.
She turned to Willow and instructed, "Willow, do you know where the fever medicine is?"
Willow nodded eagerly, "I know! I'll go get it." She dashed into the room and quickly came out with a pack of medicine.
Kennedy checked it to make sure it was fever medicine, and patted Willow's head encouragingly.
Seeing that Charles didn't want anyone to touch him, she handed the medicine to Diana and went to get a cup of hot soup.
"Take this with the soup and then go sleep in Diana's bed."
Diana, frowning as she took out the medicine, turned her head in confusion, "Why my bed?"
Kennedy's expression was teasing, as if she saw right through them.
"Your boyfriend should sleep in your bed. I still have to cook; I don't have time to find him new bedding."
As she finished speaking, the children who had finished their hot soup gathered around, and someone started saying "boyfriend."
It quickly got out of hand, and the children circled them, chanting "boyfriend."
"No," Diana immediately refuted, but her voice was drowned out.
Kennedy had already returned to the kitchen.
Finally, Evelyn dispersed the children, telling them not to disturb the patient.
The bodyguards, understanding, also returned to their rooms, leaving the living room to the two of them.
Seeing everyone had left, Diana gritted her teeth, "Are you doing this on purpose? Why didn't you explain? I don't want to have anything to do with you."
Charles smirked and extended his hand to her, his voice low. "You can explain, but after explaining, what is our relationship? Ex-husband and wife? Lovers?"
His tone was lingering, as if he were speaking sweet nothings.
Diana, with a cold face, placed the fever medicine and hot soup heavily in his hand and spat out a word, "Madman."
Then, as if afraid Charles would get angry, she fled to her room.
Charles swallowed the fever medicine with the hot soup.
To make it easier for the children to drink, the hot soup was sweet, and soon after swallowing, his chest began to warm.
He placed the empty cup on the table and made his way to Diana's room.
The door wasn't locked, and he didn't knock.
Diana sat on the bed, leaning against the headboard. Seeing him come in, she was startled. "What are you doing!"
Charles said nothing, taking off his coat and locking the door with one hand.
With the sound of the lock, Diana's heart skipped a beat.
