Chapter 45 One Million Dollars in Pocket Money
Diana leaned in, offering, "I've got a buddy who's a tech whiz. Just give me the basics. If they've booked a hotel room, he can dig up more info."
Robert's eyes nearly popped out of his head. 'Since when does Diana have a techie friend?'
Isolde felt a bit more relaxed hearing this and managed a small smile. "I want to head home tomorrow. Can Cecil stay here? I'll come back for him once I've sorted things out."
Diana nodded but was still worried about Isolde going back alone. "Want me to come with you?" She had work at the Spencer Group, but taking a day off wasn't a big deal.
Isolde shook her head. Diana had helped her too much already, and she needed to handle things on her own now.
Even though Isolde's parents had passed away, she still had a close uncle. Once she contacted him and explained everything, he could help her kick the Finnian Family out.
Seeing that Isolde had a plan, Diana didn't push further. She told Evelyn to buy some baby supplies tomorrow so Cecil would be well taken care of.
Evelyn had grown up in children's homes and often helped with the new kids. The youngest she'd cared for was just three months old, so she was pretty good with babies.
After dinner, they chatted for a bit. Around ten, Cecil got sleepy and started crying. Evelyn and Isolde quickly took him to the guest room to sleep.
Diana told Isolde to get some rest and then went back to her room. She took the info Isolde had given her and logged onto the Dark Web.
[A]: Time to get to work.
[B]: Sophia! What's up now?
Dean had just finished his shower when he saw a message on the forum. As expected, it was from Sophia, so he replied right away, not even bothering to dry his hair.
[A]: Help me check someone's hotel booking records. If there's surveillance, grab that too.
Dean stared at the message, thinking he must be seeing things. 'Such a simple task, Sophia could do it herself. Why is she asking me?'
But checking hotel records and surveillance made Dean think of a cheating man.
[B]: Who is this? Did you find another boyfriend who cheated on you?
Diana clenched her fist, wanting to punch Dean through the screen.
[A]: Why do you talk so much? Just do it. This is for a client!
Hearing it was for a client, Dean felt a bit relieved, worried that Sophia was caught up in relationship drama again.
[B]: Got it! I'll get it done. Sophia, are you really short on money? Why are you taking on such jobs?
Sophia used to take on high-end gigs, often commissioned by the upper class or even the government. They were not only well-paid but also prestigious. Now she was even taking on jobs to catch cheating men. Sophia must be really strapped for cash.
Without waiting for Diana to respond, Dean transferred a million dollars to her. Diana was about to get mad but calmed down when she saw the money. In the past, she would've scoffed at a million dollars. But now, the entire Spencer Family was living off their savings, and until the Spencer Group became profitable, they were short on cash. Diana's mood improved after getting the money, but she didn't forget to remind Dean.
[A]: Catching cheaters is also a way to uphold justice. There's no high or low in tasks.
Behind the screen, Dean pondered Diana's words, wondering if he should take on such jobs too.
[B]: Alright, Sophia, I'll get to work. Call me if you need anything.
[A]: Okay.
Since the money couldn't stay on the Dark Web for too long, Diana didn't chat much with Dean and got busy transferring the funds.
At the Percy Mansion, Charles stepped out of the bathroom, water still dripping from his hair. His bathrobe was loosely tied at the waist, and as he wiped his hair, the neckline opened wider, showing off his chest and abs, glistening under the light like a work of art.
Charles grabbed his phone and saw that Nolan had sent him Finnian's info half an hour ago. After Diana left, Eugene had called the manager of Mirage Nights Club to get Finnian to the hospital.
The manager walked in and immediately sensed something was off when he saw Charles's grim face. Seeing Finnian sprawled on the sofa, the manager let out a sharp scream. Two guests injured in a month? If it weren't for Charles's strong connections, the manager would've wanted nothing to do with him.
But Eugene cut in, "It's got nothing to do with us. We're just good Samaritans. He got caught cheating by his wife, and she beat him up. Ask around if you don't believe me."
Whether Eugene was telling the truth or not, Mirage Nights Club had no right to question him and Charles.
Out of professional courtesy, the manager bowed and said, "Thank you, gentlemen, for your help to Mirage Nights Club."
But in his mind, he thought, 'Two guys couldn't stop one woman, and they call themselves kind-hearted? They were just watching the show!'
After Finnian was taken away, Charles and Eugene lost interest in drinking and went home. But Charles remembered what Diana had said and asked Nolan to dig into Finnian. Turned out, Finnian wasn't the real owner of the company; he was just managing it for Isolde.
Marrying into the family, running the company, and cheating—these keywords quickly painted a picture of Finnian for Charles. He snorted and tossed his phone aside. But then he remembered that Finnian was introduced by Eugene, so he shot Eugene a message.
Charles: [If you introduce me to such a partner again, I'll send you to the middle of nowhere.]
Eugene, who was dozing off after a long day, was jolted awake by the message and immediately sent a flurry of apologies.
Charles didn't reply, his mind drifting to thoughts of Diana from tonight. At first, Diana said she wasn't there to see him, and it turned out she wasn't lying. For the first time, Charles felt a bit "guilty" towards Diana, though just a little. Even though it was a misunderstanding, Charles had no intention of apologizing. After all, Diana had done plenty of foolish things before, so it was normal for Charles to misunderstand her. But if she was willing to change, he didn't mind rewarding her once.
With that in mind, Charles called Nolan, "Is the location for next week's charity gala set?"
"Yes, it's at Harmony Haven Estate. Mr. Percy, do you want Ms. Williams to accompany you?" Nolan answered quickly, thinking that since Clara was working at the Spencer Group, if Charles wanted her to attend the gala, he would need to notify her in advance.
On the other end, Charles's tone was emotionless. "Have Diana go with me, and prepare as before." With that, Charles hung up the phone.
Nolan was puzzled, wondering if "as before" meant tying Diana up and bringing her there. Had Diana angered Charles again without him knowing? But no matter what, Charles must have his reasons for doing so. So Nolan turned and added it to his schedule.
