Chapter 169 Returning to the Company
But the real awkward part was just around the corner. After Axel and Nia made their way to the elevator, Diana followed suit. The fancy elevator was out of order, so she had to use the regular one.
By the elevator, besides Axel and Nia, there were other employees hanging around. Coralie's eyes lit up when she spotted Diana and greeted her cheerfully, "Good morning, Ms. Spencer."
"Good morning, Coralie," Diana replied with a slight smile.
Some of the new hires didn't recognize Diana and just thought she was stunning, so they couldn't help but stare a bit.
Little did they know, this young and gorgeous woman was actually the general manager of the Spencer Group.
The elevator arrived on the first floor, and Diana was the first to step in, followed closely by two bodyguards. They stood on either side of her, looking pretty intimidating.
The rest of the crowd stood at the elevator entrance, hesitant to get in.
Coralie took the lead, stepping into the elevator and sharing a smile with Diana.
"What are you all waiting for? Come on in." Coralie held the elevator door open with one hand and waved everyone in with the other.
The employees at the door snapped out of it and collectively shook their heads.
"You go ahead, we'll catch the next one." Nia mumbled, thinking that riding the elevator with Diana would be too nerve-wracking.
The more beautiful the woman, the more ruthless she was. Even though Diana hadn't been at the Spencer Group for long, every time she showed up, Clara's team felt the heat.
Coralie looked confused. It was just an elevator ride with Diana. What was the big deal?
But Diana saw right through them and gently pulled Coralie's hand off the elevator button. "Since they said so, Coralie, let's go up first."
Coralie nodded, "Okay."
As the elevator doors slowly closed, the others were left behind.
Diana suddenly spoke up, "Coralie, remember those employees Clara targeted and fired? Get in touch with them and bring them back."
Her tone was so casual, like she was just talking about breakfast.
Seeing Coralie's blank expression, Diana added, "Coralie, we need more hands on deck. Keep hiring."
"What?" Coralie was taken aback but quickly realized the company wasn't short on staff; there were no open positions.
Before she could ask more, the elevator stopped, and they arrived.
Diana stepped out first, her bodyguards in tow, and walked straight through the office area into her office.
Everyone in the office was stunned to see her.
"Is that Ms. Spencer? Why's she here all of a sudden?"
"Oh my god, she even brought bodyguards. Looks like she's here to stir things up."
"Whatever, it's not our problem. Let's get back to work."
Diana settled into her office and started going through the work reports Robert had compiled.
Her team's progress was solid, but Clara's team was a mess.
The new product had just launched, but its price tanked due to bad press online.
The sales and costs were completely out of whack, and they were totally dependent on the Percy Group's investment to stay afloat.
Now that Charles had handed his shares to Diana, the investment funds were gone.
If Clara wasn't dealt with soon, the Percy Group would be in serious trouble.
Diana hadn't been at it long when Robert walked in.
He looked up, surprised to see Diana. "Here so early? Couldn't sleep in a bit?"
Diana put down the file and smiled, "I was too excited about today to sleep. So, has Clara shown up yet?"
Robert took off his suit jacket and plopped down on the sofa, "Almost, their team has been causing quite a ruckus. Just while I've been here, they've had several blowouts."
"As long as our team doesn't get caught in the crossfire, I'm firing them all today!" Diana leaned back in her chair, her voice full of resolve.
"Firing that many people? The severance costs will be huge. Don't act on impulse," Robert quickly tried to talk her down.
"I'm dead serious. Not only am I firing them, but I'm also reclaiming all the company's shares," Diana said, twirling a pen with a sly smile.
"I've already secured the shares from Charles, but rounding up the remaining scattered shares will take some time."
Robert frowned slightly. Diana had mentioned over the phone that Charles had returned the Spencer Group's shares, though he didn't know the full story behind it.
Someone like Charles wouldn't just give up without a reason.
Robert's eyes drifted to Diana's abdomen, and he suddenly asked, "Is it because of the baby?"
Diana looked puzzled, "What?"
He took a deep breath and repeated, "Is it because of the baby that Charles returned the shares?"
Diana was silent for a moment before finally admitting it. "It doesn't matter what was exchanged for these shares. The most important thing now is that the Spencer Group must completely belong to me."
Robert, always perceptive, saw she didn't want to delve into it, so he changed the subject, "Be careful later. Clara's on edge because of her father's situation. Don't let her hurt you."
Diana raised her chin, "Don't worry, I brought bodyguards."
Outside the office, Clara arrived at the Spencer Group as usual.
But she looked different—plain, with dark circles under her eyes, clearly not in the mood to dress up.
As soon as she stepped into the office area, she noticed her team members giving her hesitant looks.
Clara frowned and stopped by Axel's desk, asking, "What's going on? Do I have something on my face?"
Axel shook his head and pointed towards Diana's office, whispering, "Ms. Williams, Diana is here."
Hearing this, Clara's throat tightened, and her expression grew tense. "She's here? How can she still come to the company?"
Axel didn't get her drift and explained, "She arrived an hour ago and is now in the office with Robert."
Clara clutched her handbag tightly, recalling what Claire had said before, and felt a bit more at ease.
As long as she could gather evidence of Diana bullying her, she could make Charles completely turn against Diana.
Clara swallowed and didn't respond to Axel. Instead, she turned and went back to her office.
It wasn't long before someone came to find her.
"Ms. Williams, Ms. Spencer wants to see you in the conference room."
Clara was silent for a moment, then nodded, "Okay, I'll be right there."
The messenger left, and Clara opened a drawer, took out a recording pen, slipped it into her pocket, took a few deep breaths to steady herself, and walked to the conference room.
As soon as she entered, she saw Diana sitting at the head of the table, with two bodyguards standing behind her.
And Robert, whom Clara had seen countless times at the police station, was sitting beside Diana.
"Long time no see, Clara. You look pretty tense," Diana said, her tone casual, like she was catching up with an old friend.
Clara frowned and asked the question that had been gnawing at her. "How can you still come back? Didn't you have an abortion? Why would the Percy family let you go?"
"Thanks for your concern." Diana smiled slightly, though her heart was burning with anger. If it weren't for Clara's betrayal, she wouldn't have been under Charles's watch and lost her freedom.
Diana added, "But Charles knows I'm carrying his child, and he values it very much."
