Chapter 138 Claire and Elise
"Come to work," Charles said, looking up at Claire with a flat tone.
Claire was surprised at how smoothly things went. Her eyes lit up with joy. "Thank you, Mr. Percy. I promise I'll work hard!"
"Just don't cause any trouble. I won't be so nice next time," Charles added, signaling Nolan to take Claire out.
Nolan was secretly pleased to see Claire land the job, thinking, 'Claire's got some skills. Finally, Charles will have someone to talk to.'
"Let's go, Ms. Murphy. I'll show you around your new workspace," Nolan said.
After they left, Charles' expression shifted slightly.
Claire from Skyview City had come all the way to Evergreen City to ask Charles for a job. If it were anyone else, he would've kicked them out long ago.
Claire should thank Elise; otherwise, Charles wouldn't have even let her in.
Thinking about the shareholders' meeting that night, Charles' jaw tightened.
"Mr. Charles Percy, the domestic market is booming. Mr. Zachary Percy should come back to help you out. You come to the office almost every day; it's too much!" A shareholder said, holding a document, with a feigned look of concern for Charles.
Another shareholder chimed in, "Yeah, Mr. Zachary Percy has been overseas for years. He's learned everything he needs to. Mr. Charles Percy, you should arrange for someone to take over his work and let him come back to expand new business. Don't waste his talent."
Everyone talked for a while before realizing that Charles, sitting at the head of the table, hadn't said a word. He just stared at them coldly, making everyone feel a bit guilty.
They claimed it was for the good of the company, but their real goal was to bring Zachary back.
It seemed Elise couldn't wait any longer.
Looking at the so-called uncles in front of him, Charles crossed his hands on the conference table.
Before he was seven, Charles grew up with his mother. After she died in a car accident, Juniper raised him.
And these uncles never stopped trying to kick Charles, the illegitimate child, out.
Charles had felt their malice since he was a kid and never saw them as family.
"If I remember correctly, this is a shareholders' meeting, not a session for you to lecture me," Charles said, his expression unchanged but his tone full of undisguised hostility.
Everyone was a bit scared seeing him like this.
They had been so engrossed in their talk that they forgot Charles was a cold and ruthless person.
"But everyone is right; Zachary should come back. But the company has no vacant positions, and I don't know what new business to start right now," Charles said gently, but it made people uneasy. "Which one of you is willing to step down and let Zachary take your place?"
"How can that be? You're the CEO; arranging a position is simple, isn't it?" The other shareholders were immediately unhappy when they heard Charles wanted to touch their interests.
"Yes, I am the CEO." Charles' voice was low, and his face seemed to freeze.
The entire conference room fell silent in an instant.
Charles being willing to talk meant there was still room for negotiation. If he didn't speak, it meant it was over.
At the last shareholders' meeting, a shareholder, relying on his seniority, kept mentioning Charles' father in front of him.
He also asked Charles to be grateful to Elise and take care of his brother Zachary.
Sure enough, the next day, that shareholder and his family were shipped off abroad.
Charles just smiled and said, "Since you miss Zachary so much, go keep him company."
Since then, the shareholders didn't dare bring up family ties again and focused solely on Charles and the company's growth.
Seeing no one dared to speak, Charles gave a slight, sinister smile. "Looks like we're done here. Meeting adjourned."
With that, Charles got up and left, not bothering to look at their faces.
These shareholders didn't contribute much to the company. Instead, they caused trouble, always wanting to hold meetings and rehash the same old stuff.
Charles often felt like he wasn't talking to a group of people but to Elise alone.
It must be that the shareholders' meetings had been stagnant for too long, so Elise couldn't wait to send Claire.
Charles continued eating, not caring whether what Claire said was true or false; he had time to figure it out.
Meanwhile, after a quick tour of the company, Nolan was about to take Claire back to say goodbye to Charles.
Claire unexpectedly shook her phone and said softly, "Charles doesn't like being disturbed all the time. Since I've joined, I can see him when I report to work tomorrow."
Nolan raised an eyebrow, surprised by Claire's awareness. He didn't say much and sent her downstairs before heading back.
The receptionist downstairs widened her eyes when she saw Nolan personally escorting Claire out.
"See! I told you she had a chance! So envious."
The other receptionist didn't argue this time but sighed, "It would be lucky to marry Charles."
Claire left the company and didn't rush back to her apartment.
What she said to Charles today was half true and half false.
Quincy was indeed urging Claire to get married, but he had high standards and had his eyes on his former student, Charles.
Quincy remembered that his wife's cousin was Elise, so he had an idea.
Claire originally liked Charles, so she was willing to go to Evergreen City when Quincy mentioned it.
Coincidentally, the Murphy Family had property there, enough for Claire to live alone.
Claire opened her phone and dialed a number. After 20 seconds of ringing, the other side picked up.
"Claire, how did it go today? Did you see him?" On the other end, Elise's voice was gentle and soft.
Claire smiled slightly, her voice full of confident determination. "Of course. Elise, Charles has already let me join the company. I can start as his secretary tomorrow."
Elise was a bit incredulous, not expecting things to go so smoothly.
But thinking of Claire's appearance and comparing it to Diana's during her marriage, she felt more at ease. Men liked beautiful women, and naturally, Charles would prefer gentle and considerate Claire.
"Claire, I've booked a restaurant. Have you eaten? I'll send you the location; just come over."
"Sure, Elise. I'm driving now, so I'll talk to you later. I'll be there soon."
The restaurant Elise booked wasn't far, and Claire arrived in less than 20 minutes.
The doorman saw her coming and asked, "Miss, do you have a reservation?"
Claire was about to shake her head when Elise came out from inside. "It's already booked. Just come in."
Before this, they had only talked on the phone. Meeting in person for the first time, Claire was a bit surprised.
Elise had maintained herself so well; she didn't look much older than Claire.
"Elise, it's been so long. How do you keep getting more beautiful?" Claire flattered.
